They snubbed Oprah and invented a new category to lure in Taylor Swift.

I'm reading "Golden Globes 2024 Nominations: ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ in Front/'Barbie' led the nominations with nine, followed by 'Oppenheimer' with eight. In the television categories, 'Succession' had the most with nine" (NYT).
In one obvious snub, “The Color Purple,” based on the Broadway version of the story and backed by Oprah Winfrey, was left out of the best film, musical or comedy category. In a surprise, voters found a way to invite Taylor Swift to the ceremony, nominating her “Eras Tour” concert film in a new category for blockbusters....

The January show will include two new categories — one for stand-up comedy on television and the other for blockbuster films, defined as those taking in at least $100 million at the United States box office and $150 million worldwide. (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Oscars, introduced a category for “popular” movies in 2018 as part of an effort to boost viewer interest. The film establishment had a meltdown, and the academy backtracked. To compare, Hollywood responded with shrugs in September when the Globes announced a category dedicated to box office winners, perhaps revealing how little the Globes are regarded as actual honors.)

Some of the nominees in the "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" category are also nominated in the comedy/drama "best picture" category, specifically, "Barbie" (best comedy) and "Oppenheimer" (best drama), but I presume the standard of "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" is distinctly different from being the "best." Otherwise, Taylor Swift will have no hope, and she might not show.

Americans responded with Shrugs about anything hollywood does nowadays, perhaps revealing how little hollywood is regarded by Americans.

A shrug seems like an awfully big commitment, considering how much I've been thinking about it.

Swiftie may have a football game to go to that day, anyway.

I didn't realize 'til now -- when I looked it up -- that Fantasia, fabulous Fantasia!, starred in TCP.
Not sure it's had its theatrical release in the US yet. So how can it be nominated?

Can I just say 'ha-ha sucker!' to Oprah? 1) Spielberg already made an Oscar-worthy rendition of this nearly 40 years ago that made me cry (and I was a heartless teen at the time); we didn't need YOUR 'Year Zero' remake of this. He did a very fine job. 2) You made some comments on a documentary about Spielberg making The Color Purple about how he (and I am paraphrasing) 'needed to be careful, cause you're messing with some stuff where if you don't get it right.....'.

Piss-off, you sow; I'm so thrilled your BS version got rejected.

I just glanced at this post's title again, and the names Oprah and Taylor Swift congealed into "MORE BORING THAN A DRUM CIRCLE," and that's my mind's verdict on popular culture in NewAge America.

The "The Color Purple" a remake of the 1985 movie. It won't be released until Christmas. So how can it be nominated today for any kind of award?

The NYT is creating a "racist" controversy out of whole cloth.

More like this, please. Have you seen "When They See Us"? She really tells some whoppers there,...

Huh,this is the first time I have thought about the Golden Globes in maybe a decade. Had practically forgotten they existed. I don't believe I've ever watched them. The Oscars are not far behind the Globes; I haven't seen one of those shows since the 1980's.

My time of not paying attention to these awards is definitely coming to a middle.

Golden Globe nominees and winners are chosen by 310 foreign journalists, including the 95 voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The HFPA, riddled by scandal, underwent sale of Golden Globes rights, an increase in membership from 87 to 95, and a huge reform in 2022.

Brendan Fraser (star of The Mummy and Oscar Winner for The Whale) in 2018 accused Philip Berk, the head of HFPA, of sexually groping him in 2003 and had his career killed for a while over those true remarks. The HFPA said Berk's sexual assault was meant as a joke, not a sexual assault, and kept Berk in his leadership role. The HFPA, which didn’t have any Black voting members until 2021, finally expelled Berk in 2021 for remarks he made about Black Lives Matter.

Helen Hoehne, the current head of "HFPA LLC" which administers the Golden Globes, has NOT been accused of sexual assault or racism. Yet. So the organization is improving with the years, I guess.

If Oprah's Color Purple was left out of the nominees, it was because the foreign press covering Hollywood forgot about it. Or never noticed it. Or did not like it. Or weren't bribed enough to nominate it. The HFPA runs the Golden Globes, and ran it right into the ground a few years ago.

In fairness, Spielberg remade "West Side Story."

Proposed new Oscar categories:

1. Most Black.
2. Most Female.
3. Most Gay.
4. Most Trans.

The Golden Globes have a long and troubled history of inventing categories, nominating undeserving films/performances, and more. The small group of self-selected "journalists" that make up the "Hollywood Foreign Press" have none of the ethic rules that surround the Oscars. Years ago, many of the voters were wined and dined in Las Vegas at the casino owned by the husband of Pia Zadora. Amazingly, she got a GG for "New Star of the Year" for her widely-panned film debut. It was admitted, off the record, that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got acting nomination for the (apparently terrible) film Mr. and Mrs. Smith was to have them show up for the awards show and boost ratings on NBC.

It’s eligible. Fantasia was nominated for the best actress award so clearly it’s in the running.

looks like the time for honoring OK Boomer billionaires is over. Let's see if the new generation is any better, at least at sticking to entertaining.

So is 'Purple' a musical or a comedy?

You can only remake a movie so many times.

Has Oprah ever promoted an idea that didn't play on race?

'The US really hates black people,' says the billionaire black person as she counts the money white people gave her.

One of the saddest things to watch during this season is the Hollywood Christmas Parade.

If you want to see how much the tinsel has lost its shine, try to find a video of it from the Hollywood heyday and a video from recently.

Yesteryear progressives, obviously. Girls, and their male suitors, empathize with Swift. Don't hate her because she's popular.

Surely, she can afford to go someplace where black people are more appreciated, can't she?

Maybe Oprah can do to Taylor at the Golden Globes what Kanye did to her at the Grammy's a few years ago.

Relevant Golden Globes Quote by Ricky Gervais: "Many talented people of color were snubbed in major categories. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that. Hollywood Foreign press are all very racist."

Is there something I'm missing here?

This article talks about the 2024 Golden Globes but 2023 isn't over yet.

The Color Purple isn't scheduled for release until December 25th 2023.

"So is 'Purple' a musical or a comedy?"

It's primarily based on a Broadway musical version of the novel, but they appear to have cut several songs (according to Wikipedia) and, as is the norm in Hollywood these days, the advertising contains no clue that the movie might be a musical (the West Side Story trailers a few years ago didn't have any singing either, as I recall).

I just watched the Imdb.com entry for 2023 "The Color Purple" that Mike of Snoqualmie posted. If nothing else, the cinematography looks gorgeous.

I do appreciate the "blockbuster" category, given that the award shows have become obsessed with overly dramatic movies that the general movie going audience ignores. It says something when the industry thinks that making financial losers that impress a very small percentage of the market is "success."

Taylor Swift is getting a lot, I mean a lot, of very friendly press coverage over the past few months. Coverage that seems designed to move her out of her fan base, and into a wider audience. What could be up with this, one wonders? Is she considering entering different forms of entertainment, i.e. acting? Politics maybe?

Think back to high school, and the theater geeks.

Did you ever wonder if those very people might one day end up frontrunning world opinion?

Me neither. They were weirdos.

So why do we listen to them now?
