Sophie Venetitay, from the Snes-FSU teachers union, told the AFP news agency that several first-year high school students, aged 11 and 12, said they were offended by the work by 17th-Century Italian painter Giuseppe Cesari. She said some students had “averted their gaze”, “felt offended” and said they were “shocked”.... Ms Venetitay said staff felt they had been left feeling unsupported and working in a “degraded climate”, adding the incident reminded her of the brutal killing of Samuel Paty.Mr Paty was stabbed then beheaded near his secondary school in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in October 2020 after showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a class.
This is my second post on the subject. Here's the first. I consider this a new topic because of the quote in the post title, reflecting the distinctively strong French dedication to secularism, something I've blogged about many times in the 20-year history of this blog, beginning with 3 posts in the first year of this blog: "Enforcing strict secularism in France," "It isn't a lack of understanding of history that makes the French head scarf ban seem wrong to Americans," and "Only one slope is slippery."

The streets of Paris were made wide so the Army could more easily line up and shoot protesters and revolutionaries, or so it is said. And that has happened many times over the past few centuries.
The non-secularists in France, who are NOT Southern Baptists but who remain oddly undescribed in the stories about the students, must accept the state in France as their primary authority in public. They can practice religious fundamentalism privately, or not at all. And their religious beliefs will impose no requirements on anyone else. French governments have worked long and hard since the Revolution to make sure nobody threatens the state, and I don't see that changing even under Macron.
In the US, of course, our US Constitution is based on the idea that individuals have inherent rights which the government shall not infringe, and government is supposedly limited to only authorized power by the people. In France, rights are granted to the people by the government, and the government gets to ordain how they may be exercised.
And French schoolkids will look at French paintings and learn French history in a manner that enhances French political power and prestige, while in the US our Marxist educrats instill hatred of self in every school child in the name of progress.
Sometimes maybe we could learn a few things from our overseas brethren.
When I was 11 or 12 years old, we were trying to sneak a peak at Playboy magazines and wore out the women's underwear section of the Sears Catalog.
"Avert your gaze" was the Frank Rich's review of Paul Simon's "Capeman."
I admire her courage, and I hope her head stays attached.
"The role of the French school is to train republicans"
Sorry. Too late. You let in millions of anti-republicans.
"I will never accept that at the Republic school we refuse to look at a painting."
That sounds very brave. But the followers of Allah refuse your refusal.
What those republicans have yet to accept is that, if they want to save their countries and their "republican" culture, they must stop and reverse the invasions they have tolerated. So far, most of them still far they refuse to recognize reality.
Why have the French invited into their country people who are antithetical to their beliefs? The only way out is to remove them, but that's not going to happen. You've changed (some might say ruined) your own country. You have my sympathy.
The role of the French school is to train republicans.
All my children received their primary education at a French Republic school, and I can attest the French are deadly serious about transmitting the values of Western Civilization to the next generation. They view American-style woke leftism and Christian fundamentalism as two sides of the same Puritanical coin. Their institutions are better equipped than ours to resist the fundamentalist urge to turn children into sheeple.
1. Secular Republic
2. Unrestricted Immigration from Muslim former colonies.
Choose one.
But the French/Euro elite spent the last 30 years demonizing as fascist any politician who tired to point this truth out. So here we are.
I don't understand why 11-year-olds are required by law to look at a so-so painting by a so-artist depicting an obscure mythological scene featuring a bunch of fat naked ladies. To most 11-year-olds naked ladies are a source of either ogling or giggling. They don't see the supposed "great art." And if you're teaching an art-history lesson about the nude in art, why not some beautiful works by great masters: Botticelli, Titian, Michelangelo, Velazquez? And wait until the kids are a few years older and more mature?
It's pretty tame compared to what our elementary sshool kids are showm. Blowjobs, anal sex, the whole 19 yards (way past the whole 9 yards)
French parents should count themselves lucky this is the worst thing the school wants to show them.
Still is there any particular reason that this particular painting is studied at this age? Seems like there must be plenty of great no-nude art to study.
I'm on the parents side here. I have no problem with the picture. not for 10-12 year Olds in a compulsory setting
John Henry
What a complete and utter crock of bullsh*t.
Once again, and again and again and again, etc.,
the root cause of disharmony is ISLAM.
Do the French really believe that these students will become good French citizens in five years, honoring laïcité? Will their Muslim parents?
"The distinctively strong French dedication to secularism"
Give me a break: I was attacked by Nazis - with dogs - in France. I was chased from an ATM - by a white mob - in France. I watched them count the sides of rocks - to determine what they "mean" - in France.
They're dedicated to insanity.
They tried to in the 90s under balladur and pasqua
"The role of the French school is to train republicans"
Whereas the role of the American school is to train Democrats.
Chick on the right is hot.
Crack, you are turning into a sad parody of yourself. Yes, we know that all topics exist so that you can tell exaggerated if not entirely fictional stories about yourself, but it's getting boring. Plus, by exposing yourself so thoroughly regarding Hamas, you've squandered any residual tolerance people might have felt toward you.
'Give me a break: I was attacked by Nazis - with dogs - in France.'
Too bad you weren't Arab, you'd have been the on throwing the rocks...
Crack, just let us know when you've converted to Islam.
I suspect it won't be long now.
The suspence is killing me!
Of course, we all know you won't be doing it to actually take up the cause and fight. That's what the hilarious "macho" overcompensation is all bout.
Earnest Prole: "They view American-style woke leftism and Christian fundamentalism as two sides of the same Puritanical coin. Their institutions are better equipped than ours to resist the fundamentalist urge to turn children into sheeple."
Wow. "Chritian fundamentalism" and wokeism are the sides of the "Puritanical coin".
Gee, can you think of any other "fundamentalist" beliefs in France at this time that might deserve a mention in this thread?
Good old Earnest Prole, playing to type.
Is this happening because the students are Muslim? Or because they are woke, like the curators of the Manchester Art Gallery?
'Crack, just let us know when you've converted to Islam.'
He'll probably look great in a bow tie...
Wow. "Chritian fundamentalism" and wokeism are the sides of the "Puritanical coin".
Wokeism is a fake fundamentalist religion that most closely resembles American Puritanism with its notions of Original Sin (Whiteness), Predestination (born a victim) and Salvation (Doing the Work). If you fail to see that, nothing I have to say will help.
I referenced American fundamentalism because my children’s French education was received in America, which heightened the contrasts with our lame educational system. In my final sentence I’m referencing the fundamentalism the French face, which of course is Islamic. But in the end, distinctions not cost effective: They’re all enemies of Western Civilization.
Democracy and secular vs other religion(s). A minority disagree with your prescriptions. Now what? Teacher! Leave them kids alone.
"Crack, just let us know when you've converted to Islam."
Joe Smith: "He'll probably look great in a bow tie..."
Nah. Crack will just wear the terrorist scarf and join up with gangs attacking old Jewish women at gricery stores or synogogues. Crack lacks the toughness and discipline Malcolm X's crew demonstrated...even if they all did eventually turn on each other with the help of disinformation and infiltration/exploitation/undermining ops by the FBI and CIA.
That painting would not have been acceptable to the parents of my school mates back in the early 60's in upstate NY. It probably would have been available in an art book in the adult section of our local library. No one would have been stabbed for it, but a contract probably wouldn't have been renewed.
"It's pretty tame compared to what our elementary sshool kids are showm. Blowjobs, anal sex, the whole 19 yards (way past the whole 9 yards)"
Where? Proof?
James K said...
"The role of the French school is to train republicans

Laughed out loud at that one, James. But it's true.
The role of the French school is to train Republicans. And now you're gonna have to fight for the survival of your school, because if you don't, you lose the school and the society. Given the enthusiasm of the head-choppers, it's gonna take armed guards. And probably a few live rounds, pour encourager les autres. Bring a gun to a knife fight, as it were.
Well the French may believe in "assimilate or else". But how is that really working for them? Every summer there are thousands of burned cars--and every now and then a French teacher is decapitated.
The genius of the United States of America's growth until say about 1980 was that immigrants who came here voluntarily assimilated. Not so much anymore and that's why we are headed for trouble. Do you believe that Ilhan Omar wants to assimilate? If you do, I've got a bridge to sell you.
"The genius of the United States of America's growth until say about 1980 was that immigrants who came here voluntarily assimilated. Not so much anymore and that's why we are headed for trouble."
Yep. The left's multiculturalism is poison.
'Where? Proof?'
You haven't been paying attention.
There are hundreds of links to stories (with pix) of some very controversial books available to middle schoolers.
Start with 'Gender Queer.'
If you haven't heard of it then you are woefully misinformed, and it would explain your lack of current events knowledge...
Why have the French invited into their country people who are antithetical to their beliefs?
Like the Belgians, English, and Dutch, if you spend 400 years colonizing the world, killing and enslaving the indigenous peoples, and stripping their lands of resources, well then fuck you, you deserve the pain that welcoming your former subjects involves.
The genius of the United States of America's growth until say about 1980 was that immigrants who came here voluntarily assimilated.
This statement is complete bullshit. The immigrants who came here (sometimes involuntarily) didn't voluntarily assimilate. You have parts of the country (e.g., parts of Louisiana and Texas) where Spanish or French were the predominate language well into the twentieth century. Lawrence Welk was in his early twenties when he finally learned English (and always had a slight German accent), even though he was born and raised in North Dakota.
now you're gonna have to fight for the survival of your school, because if you don't, you lose the school and the society
Murder, rape, torture, and redistributive change... grooming, too. Some would call it social justice. Take a knee, beg, do it again, and again, and again.
Why have the French invited into their country people who are antithetical to their beliefs?
Democratic gerrymandering. Redistributive change. Labor arbitrage. Abortion compensation. Also, ethnic Springs are a first-order forcing of catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform (CAIR). Take a knee, deplorables.
The left's multiculturalism is poison.
Diversity (i.e. color judgment, class bigotry), Indoctrination, and Exclusion (DIE)
I did one post - about my experience - and it generates 5 responses, with Old and slow leading the pack; once again forgetting this blog is not a democracy, so - despite his claims - nobody gives a fuck how he feels.
Anyway, five responses is wild, when - if they hadn't said shit - I had nothing else to offer.

Field Marshall Freder: "Like the Belgians, English, and Dutch, if you spend 400 years colonizing the world, killing and enslaving the indigenous peoples, and stripping their lands of resources, well then fuck you, you deserve the pain that welcoming your former subjects involves."
Well, well well.
So NOW we see that whole "we are Charlie Hebdo" thingy by the lefties was always a lie and as mentioned over and over again, the undeniable alliance between the lefties and the islamic supremacists continues apace and they are joined at the hip in destroying the west.

The only differences between transgender sex change surgery and Female Genital Mutilation is that we make reality shows about it and use it to sell beer.
