Clyde's Top 15 Favorite "New" Songs of 2023 - #1 - "Jealous Moon" - Sarah Jarosz - Polaroid Lovers (2024)
No, that's not a typo. The album comes out on January 26th, but the first song (and video) released from the album came out in September. Wikipedia describes the Texas-born Jarosz's music as Americana/bluegrass/country folk/folk. Her music has been mostly acoustic. This song represents a different direction for her, in a year in which she got married, moved from New York City to Nashville and started collaborating on songwriting with some new people.
It will be interesting to listen to the new album when it comes out and see whether this is just a stylistic one-off or not. All I know is that this song blew me away when I first heard it, enough that it squeezed past "Capricornia" by Allo Darlin' for the top spot on my countdown this year.
Two legends will not see the New Year — Shecky Greene, commedian, and Cale Yarborough, NASCAR racing driver. Given the forecast that next year will be one of the most chaotic election years since 1860, there are people who might say that they’re the lucky ones. We shall see.
Ironwood MI premier ski race SISU Ski Fest is cancelled for lack of snow. https://www.skinnyski.com/racing/PR/sisuskifest20231229.pdf
It’s a good thing we have the manmade snow this year. The manmade snow adds 1 month to 5 weeks of ski days to the average natural snow ski season of about 70 days. Basically, every ski season now is a 100 day ski season. We have been very dry snow-wise – 1.3 inches so far in December which usually has about 10 inches of snow. We have also been very warm with December currently running 9.4 F above average at 32.8 F and headed for the warmest December on record. I’m sure we’ll eventually get some snow and colder weather. I’d just settle for some cold so that the mushy uphills firm up. I don’t think it is so, but I hope we haven’t hit a trend in the climate.
It is New Year’s Eve! Why on the way home tonight between 0000 and 0100 I’ll be setting my cruise control at no more than 3 MPH over the posted speed limit. Unless there’s a truck on the Thruway barreling along faster. Distance pacing cruise- I’ll set it to stay behind the truck.
I really like distance pacing cruise control. Especially on secondary roads when I get behind someone randomly varying their speed from 40-60 in a 55 MPH area with no passing zones…
Seen on XTwitter, from Michael Haz, an erstwhile commenter here:
"Let’s say that you’re a famous police agency and you want to go into some famous person’s home for a look around, but don’t have enough cause to obtain a warrant.
What are you going to do?
Well maybe, just maybe, you ask the people in an untraceable ally agency buried deep in you r organization to tell some other deep dark group to stage a swat on the people/home you want to get into.
They do, of course, and all manner of law enforcement deploys immediately because the telephone call said utterly horrific things were happening and you better send mucho help now!
Your agents storm the building, take the occupants into ‘protective’ custody for a few minutes and bingo! you’ve got unfettered access to anything and everything in the home, all because you’re ‘clearing’ it room-by-room.
Weird, innit, how the perps who made the swatting call are never found, even though all the agencies have full access to every conceivable manner of telephonic records."
Thanks for the Jarosz link, Clyde. I knew the name but little of her work.
It reminded me that I learned only recently--embarrassingly so--that the beautiful and talented Patricia Janeckova, that buwaya turned me on to, died a few months ago. Age 25.
by the time I get up tomorrow morning and sit down w/cup of coffee, there will be 50+ Happy New Year comments, so this is my early. . .
Happy New Year Meadehouse and assorted commenters her on Althouse blog. This is the 1st thing I read every morning, but by that time, everyone has commented and left hours before. Regardless - First Read of the Day, every day for at least the last 10 years or so.
The question is whether to stay up until midnight to record the rural gunfire. Delay after midnight indicates distance away, a mile for every five seconds.
@Narr, Janeckova‘s rendition of the “Laughing Song” from “Die Fledmaus” is my favorite, better IMAO than any other soprano I’ve ever heard.
It’s after midnight Eastern time so the wife and I, having toasted the New Year, are headed for bed. I wish Althouse, Meade, and everyone (except the Hamas apologists) a Happy New Year.

I watched the "Great Race" with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, Natalie Wood, Keenan Wynn and Peter Falk as I waited for midnight. Still a great movie, unlike the dreck we see coming out of Hollywood now. The pie-fight scene is the GOAT pie-fight scene. The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis), who always wears white, wanders around the bakery as the pies are flying with getting just a few splatters on his immaculate whites, while everyone else is covered in pie filling. He's calling out "Miss DeBois (Natalie Wood)?" and getting no response. Eventually his luck runs out and he's covered in pie filling.
Jack Lemon is fantastic as Professor Fate, the Great Leslie's nemesis. Professor Fate's attempts to sabotage the Great Leslie always backfire. Peter Falk is Professor Fate's side kick, Max. Hey, it's Peter Falk!

New Year's? Bah, humbug!
Not that I'm not glad to be here, but '23 went fast IMO, and '24 looks to be fast and furious.
