"Hunter is... a domestic offender of a more mundane stripe, his misdeeds largely outside the reach of the law, involving serious harm..."

"... not to the American taxpayer but to the family that is, per the Biden fantasy, the beginning, the middle, and the end. Of all the anecdotes in these four memoirs, the one that I think about the most is from 'If We Break.' It is the spring of 2002, and Buhle, then the mother of a baby, a toddler, and an eight-year-old, is enjoying a rare night out with a friend in New York City, a two-hour train trip from her home in Wilmington. Her friend urges her to stay overnight; Buhle calls Hunter, who says it’s fine. But then she asks him to take Naomi, their oldest child, to Sunday school the next morning. 'No,' Buhle recalls him saying. 'I’m not going to do that, Kathleen.' So Buhle boards a train home in the middle of the night, arriving at 5 a.m. to the sight of Hunter and a group of friends smoking and drinking in front of the family’s fireplace. The kids, it seems, are at their grandparents’ house.... What explains... this ostentatious defiance of basic responsibility, this refusal to be fully part of the family you’ve created? Can this mind-set be blamed on addiction? Trauma? The learned helplessness of men in heterosexual partnerships? The ego-warping effects of a famous last name? Are dirtbags born or made? And what, in the end, is a father good for?"

Writes Jessica Winter, in "Hunter Biden and the Things Left Unsaid/The President’s son is a ubiquitous topic of conversation. But, in four Biden-family memoirs, silence is the undercurrent that tugs at a voluble, demonstrative clan" (The New Yorker).

Buhle = Kathleen Buhle, Hunter's first wife, author of the memoir "If We Break."

"[S]ilence is the undercurrent that tugs at a voluble, demonstrative clan" — what a phrase! "Voluable" means talking incessantly. Picture, if you can, blabbermouths dragged down by an undertow consisting of silence.

There's a word for the fear of silence: sedatephobia.

Wasn't that picture of a bottle of a date rape drug that Hunter showed off in a picture on his laptop cool? I am sure Hunter has some medical condition that requires him to have this drug in quantity.

Remember the message on the laptop to his sister where Hunter complained that "dad takes half" of everything they make? Why would he lie to his sister about something that she would instantly know was true or false?

The learned helplessness of men in heterosexual relationships? Does she mean Oedipal?

"I chose Hunter Biden to father my child because he was a lot of fun
He turned out to be a complete creep.
All men are worthless. Q.E.D."

I mean, if a Biden doesn't make a great dad, what hope can there be for the rest of the men out there?

Am I reading this right? It starts by saying Hunter’s crimes are no big deal because what he did to his family was worse, and finishes by saying what he did to his family wasn’t really his fault because all men are scum?

all men are scum

A common sentiment under diversity dogma of class-disordered ideologies in progressive religions.

That said, men, women, and our Posterity are from Earth. Feminists are from Venus. Masculinists are from Mars. Social progressives are from Uranus. #WarOfTheWorlds

I haven't read the article yet. I did watch last night's evening news on ABC. They featured him reading his statement on the steps of the Capitol. Brave Hunter struggles with the disease of addiction and is persecuted by vindictive Republicans in an effort to discredit his father. I don't know if that narrative has much traction, but that's the one they're going with for now. Perhaps they'll come up with a better angle....One thing we know for sure: No reporter is going to win a Pulitzer for his investigation of Hunter's tangled finances. Maybe some reporter could interview one of Hunter's inamorata's and inform us of the kind of interesting details that Stormy Daniels divulged about her affair with Trump. I wonder what Hunter's high school yearbook looked like. How about a biopic with Tom Hardy in the role of this troubled genius and Bruce Willis in the role of his worried, loving father?

Well,
when your dad cheated on your mom with your babysitter..
when your mom killed herself by driving her car (with YOU in it) into an oncoming truck..
when your dad then Married the babysitter..
when your dad would force your sister into "inappropriate" showers..
when your dad would Make a Point of walking around the house naked..
when your family is Literally, The MOST DISGUSTING FAMILY on EARTH..

The " disease " of addiction ? Bullshit, addiction is a coping mechanism, an excuse to avoid the vagaries of everyday life and its responsibilities in this case. An excuse to allow one to shit all over everyone without taking any responsibility for being a lazy, ignorant jackass. Hunter Biden is a vile despicable pig just like the rest of the Bidens, everyone. He should be imprisoned for his crimes along with the rest of his criminal family members and relatives. Stop making excuses for this vile turd.

Smoking and drinking at 5 AM? It sounds like someone's book got vetted by lawyers and the salacious psrt of the anecdote got removed.

Who were the friends and what were they smoking?

Pretty sure she's referring to the old "damned if I do, damned if I don't" experienced by most men in heterosexual relationships. The damning for not doing is usually of much shorter duration than the damning we get if we do and accomplish the task, just not the way she thinks it should have been done, so that's how we roll.

This knowledge that Hunter's sins are mundane reminds me of things we have been told, in the not too distant past, that we know.

We knew that Hunter's laptop was Russian disinformation.
We knew that Hunter's job with Burma had nothing to do with Joe Biden.

We knew that the president should never speak directly to his FBI director (remember when Comey had to hide in the curtains in Trump's office?)
We knew that Covid accidentally escaped from a lab.
We knew that Congressman Jamal Bowman came across a really confusing sign about the fire alarms on the doors.

These are things we knew. The press told us we knew them and we always had known them. Do what we know right now, is that Hunter did not involve his dad in his lucrative business. We know this because.

You people need to have some empathy. Poor little Hunter Biden lost his mother and siblings at an early age in a car accident in which he suffered a traumatic brain injury. In other words he cannot help the way he behaves. Self medication womanizing narcissistic personality disorder unbridled greed and corruption. This is what happens when a Democrat suffers brain damage, they turn into Republicans.

Hmm, don’t wanna say that.

It’s not his fault, because all men are scum, plus the patriarchy, you guys.

There is a word, too, for articles like this: whitewash. Or maybe cover up. Or perhaps willful blindness, two words.

Hunter is not in trouble for avoiding Sunday School, and to pretend otherwise is to lie by omission.

"What explains... this ostentatious defiance of basic responsibility"

Some people really are psychopaths who do not feel such "responsibility" or care about other people's feelings or interests. Joe and Hunter are alike in that regard.

"silence is the undercurrent that tugs at a voluble, demonstrative clan"

They see nothing wrong with it, so nothing tugs at anything. But silence is the undercurrent of prog protection of the Bidens. At least this piece hints at the fundamental immorality of the clan. But for the most part progs stay silent.

When The New Yorker covers the gory details in bidenreport.com, we'll know that the silence has been broken.

I do have some sympathy for Hunter Biden- he clearly was not the favored of Joe Biden's two sons, and he appears to have known that from an early age. I am even willing to acknowledge that some of his behavior is probably due to physical injuries suffered in the accident that was plausibly his mother's murder and suicide attempt.

However, he clearly isn't so brain-damaged as to be not responsible for tax evasion. If Donald Trump Jr. was autistic, was investigated, and the exact same evidence were on the table in 2019, he would have been in federal prison since 2020, and his father would also be in that prison system today.

The Bidens are grifters- full stop.

To paraphrase that sage from Louisiana James Carville, the Biden family consists of the sort of people you get when trolling a $100 bill through a trailer park.

Having investigated and prosecuted a number of cases involving political corruption and large sums of money, I agree that many of the Biden family's misdeeds may be outside the law. Large payoffs to politicians may be insurance, not exactly bribes.

In the case of Burisma, the insurance paid off with extortion by QuidProJoe and it became a bribe. That's why Trump had to be impeached for QuidProJoe's crime.

Large gifts to grifters may also buy favoritism in awarding government funds and contracts.

Nothing we don't all see and tolerate. Sad!

Hey, Howard: What prominent Repub has behaved like Hunter Biden or, for that matter QuidProJoe?

Why make excuses?

Media has a weird tendency to treat Hunter Biden as a child. He was born in 1970.

At what age does someone become responsible for his actions?

In Hunter’s defense, it seems as if he was just saying that the eight-year-old could skip Sunday school. He didn’t think Sunday school was a big enough deal for him to get up for. The daughter was at the grandparents house and he hadn’t planned on any obligations in the morning. Did Kathleen say if you won’t agree to take our daughter to Sunday school I’m going to have to take the two hour train ride and arrive home at 5 AM or did the phone call end with him thinking she was staying over in New York and the girl wouldn’t go to Sunday school that week Would it really be so awful? He agreed that the wife could stay over in New York. He didn’t say you’d better get home or no one will be here to take care of the child. He just made an executive decision to reject Sunday school.

Ann,

What is unspoken here is Buhle knew he was an addict. She could tell he was already drunk and/or high when talking to him on the phone. His refusal to take the kid to Sunday school was a declaration that he was about to go on a bender.

I think people have to remember that Hunter wasn't the prodigal son here. He was the spare and probably treated as such.

Family dynamics can get nasty, look at Henry II and his relationships with his sons especially after Henry the Young King, his heir, died before him.

Of course I don't know them aside from the reporting, but the Bidens have always seemed to be one of those toxic, powerful families whose psychopathy runs across generations and leaves a trail of wreckage. And this story does nothing to diminish those sentiments.

Of course the sympathetic Legacy MSM has fallen over itself with attempts to normalize this, on the way to excusing it. The other day on NPR, I was hearing a couple of males talk admiringly of Hunter Biden's well-documented depravities. The idea was, this is a guy puts Charlie Sheen to shame, a real bad-boy who raises it to some kind of art form worthy of being not just admired, but almost worshiped.

Listening to this - what? - Fan-Boydom being rolled out by a couple of insincere, second-rate announcers was more than a bit cringe-inducing. Bad-boy record-breaking behavior aside, what is admirable about a paunchy, out-of-shape dude sporting a couple of tattooed C-grade hookers while toking on a crack pipe supposed to do for me? Let's see those meth-teeth again, Hunter, now show me the caps. Yeah. Let's talk about your kids, especially the one you sued to prevent taking your name 'What an animal' is right.

Reviewing the terms "Personality Disorder" and "Sociopathy" would be a good beginning to understanding what to most people is incomprehensible behavior. Certainly Hunter didn't start out life desiring to be what it is we see now but learned it on the way by being influenced by the "big guy" as most of us are.
