If successful, the court will enter a declaratory judgment that renders ESSB 5874 unconstitutional and void.

“This motion to get a final court ruling is not just about trying to help people with sky-high gas prices and license fees, it is also a chance to make sure the state constitution is followed so that the legislature can’t play word games with laws.” said Jackson Maynard, Executive Director of CADF. “It is somewhat ironic that even the parties arguing for the act’s constitutionality couldn’t agree on the meaning of the title of the bill in briefing. If the state and proponents are confused about what bill language means, the public stands no chance. The need for transparency is exactly why this provision of the state constitution exists.”

THIS is the construction that I've run across several times recently. And I see why, think - the plain old word "what" is indeterminate in number, even though the rest of the subject, "makes me angry," implies that "what" is singular. But what I've seen recently and don't remember seeing in the past is that the verb agrees with the part of the sentence that is definitely and uniformly determinate in number, the predicate nominative. Is this correct?

I would still have used "is" instead of "are" here. Now, if I were to reverse the sentence - "The statements they keep making are what makes me angry" - I would use "are" and I can't imagine it another way. But in my original example, I swear I've been seeing "are" instead of "is" even though the "what" is used in a singular sense.

So - is this a special case, when a sentence begins with "what" for some reason (or, I suppose, "who" or "that which")? Because it still seems to me that in deciding the subject-verb agreement, you should consider the WHOLE subject, not just the indeterminate word or phrase that opens the subject.; 9/20/23, 5:30 AM

Don’t know what I expected but there were a couple of sisters there. They live close by and go over a few times a year. Ray Epps vehemently urged people to enter the Capitol. It's on video. He is as responsible as anybody for the stuff that happened that day, but he gets puff pieces in the media, and kid glove treatment by the DoJ.

The QAnon Shaman also got a heavy sentence based on his political expression: "The third person with such a sentence was Jacob Chansley, who did not engage in violence but whose visage as the “QAnon shaman” became an indelible symbol of Jan. 6."

I know you guys hate free speech, but this authoritarian use of selective prosecution, where were the prosecutions in the Kavanaugh hearings? The complete disinterest in the role of the FBI in this demonstration that certainly got out of hand, and the complete lack of interest in decisions such as declining National Guard protection for the Capitol building, as offered by Donald Trump, is more than a little disturbing.

All violent offenders should be prosecuted, for sure. But the prosecution of political speech is USSR level stuff.
