Now, Walz was in Iowa representing the Biden campaign, so his "endorsement" of Burgum is to be understood in that context, but here's what Walz had to say about Burgum on "Meet the Press":
[Y]ou were asking what's going to come out of this debate. The minute they all step on the stage, the American people have lost. Are they going to debate who can ban the most books? Who – you know, Doug, he didn't tell you this, but he signed a six week abortion ban, which is hugely unpopular and simply wrong in America. So yeah, we're friends, but I hate to see it go down this road. Those are very simple questions about – you were asking about the President, about the indictments and so I was a little bit tongue-in-cheek. And the sad part is, I do believe that Doug is probably the most normal of these. That's a pretty weird group of folks that are going to be on the debate stage. Doug's a pretty good guy, but he's trapped in a Republican party with no ideas.
No ideas? Come on. At least give them credit for having weird ideas.
Anyway, it seems that "normal" is a very high standard this time around. But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird" when, for so long, they've been stressing the singular weirdness of Trump. I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal, but there's something abnormal — perverse — about generating the feeling that all the candidates are weird.

Just another focus-group-tested response.
"Weird" is all they got, basically.
Same ol same ol. Dems want to reach down and eroticise kindergartners, obliterate the male-female binary, permit and subsidize the mutillation of minors without parental consent, eviscerate education of standards and achievement, and of course, sacralise their beloved baby killing obsession, but conservatives are the extremists!
Don't overthink this, Althouse. Walz is an idiot and what comes out of his mouth is almost guaranteed to be weird.
Walz judging who's normal?
Irony hall of fame.
Don’t believe your lying eyes when one encounters the daily evidence of the absolutely insane look and behavior of the Left and their myriad special interest groups as they “follow the science”, lol.
Fucking rotters…
"...the argument that we need a President who's at least normal,..."
Last time around, Biden was presented as the candidate that would return things to normal after Trump. We can see how that turned out.
The important thing to remember is that even the best of THEM is not one of US, you know? People like you and me, normal people? Do you want to be ruled by THEM? Of course you don't. You're not evil or crazy, are you?
Repeat this from all normal, official, approved sources ad nauseum until election day. Add the message to the water that comes out of your faucet. After all, WE all know the US party will be running against Trump, the worst man of all time (well, since Hitler), who will very possibly be sitting in prison on election day. This will PROVE to the electorate that WE were right all along.
Good times. How can anyone lose in a situation like that? Don't worry, it's covered.
Brilliant work, to assure fair elections and preserve our democracy.
The party of gender switching, open borders, massive homeless camps, and unlimited shoplifting is saying the other side is not "normal".
Amazing.
They choose not to recognize anything that counters their agenda, like this: If you don’t like our multi-trillion dollar climate change proposal then let’s see your multi-trillion dollar climate change proposal…what? you don’t even HAVE a multi-trillion dollar climate change proposal!?! see? See? SEE!?! No ideas…
I don’t know why any politician that has signed a six week abortion ban believes they have a shot at the national election.
They so sis weeks to set the bargaining point. The left wants abortions until six months after the kid is born. The compromise is the global fifteen weeks.
Why can’t we be more like Sweden?
GOP the party of weird ideas? This is coming from a member of the political party who thinks it’s normal to surgically mutilate children to “change their gender”. Rich, just rich…
Governor Walz could you please clarify just what it is you mean by weird? Would you say they are more sniff young girls hair inappropriately weird or claim they’re Native American for decades weird? Or is it the more run of the mill cackle and talk nonsense while imagining you’re saying something profound weird? Thank you.
Democrats are neobarbarians. They can't stand that Republicans won't act like Lite-Democrats. They cannot tolerate different opinions so they use the Big Lie to denigrate non-Democrats. They support criminals, bully-boy activists, illegal immigrants and concrete campers over the ordinary citizens. They want to restrict cheap energy and transportation and want to impose unreliable "green" energy and expensive Emission Elsewhere Vehicles. They dream of high-speed rail that no one will use but will cost $1B/mile - there's a lot of graft to be made building high-speed rail.
Democrats want Joe Biden as their candidate and will impeded any other Democrat or other left-wing candidates. Any other Dem candidate need not apply. Look how they're treating RFJ, Jr. and People Party's Cornel West. They're trying to keep Cornel West off the ballot.
Democrats are the party of fascism. Believe as they do or else.
Just figure out who seems to mean well. It's traditional.
For many years the GOP debates have been about the moderators trying to prove the candidates were weird. Question selection is driven by this. It's tedious.
But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird" when, for so long, they've been stressing the singular weirdness of Trump.
Haven't you been paying attention the last fifty years? That's the norm. Reagan was a dangerous fascist who was going to put gays back in the closet, women back in the kitchen and Black people back into the fields when he ran for office. Today it's "why can't the Republicans be more like Reagan?". Whomever the Republican nominee is, they are going to be attacked as a weird out of the mainstream danger to our democracy. It's what the Democrats and MSM do every election. Look at how they portrayed Mitt Romney for Christ's sake, or McCain...and they were Democratic lap dogs who rolled over and showed their belly.
I guess if you like boring, then routine demagoguery is your thing. Seems boring to me. I guess Biden is normal, because many American families are now dealing with children addicted to drugs but able to get million dollar jobs working on the board of foreign oil and gas companies. Anyone can get a sweetheart deal when failing to pay taxes and obtaining a firearm while lying on ATF forms. So normie.
"Weird" is the opening gambit. They reserve "worse than Hitler" for the eventual nominee though they do ramp up "worse than Trump" for any potential minority nominee that is doing well in the polling.
Exposing yourself to mainstream news outlets is to your mind like drinking sugar water with caffeine for breakfast lunch and dinner is to your body.
No mention that, if Biden and his family are "normal", quite a few of us would like off the planet.
Examine the state of civilization in Minnesota and then tell me why Tim Walz is qualified to access or even understand normality.
The side show geeks think the audiance is weird. Go figure.
Since I no longer watch "Meet the Regime Press" I don't suppose they bothered to follow up with Gov. Walz and ask him to list the ideas he believes are normal?
When you control mass media, you can preemptively disqualify your opponents by making them unspecifically strange, i.e., "weird". And you can even get away with claiming that they have no ideas, when your media refuse to report upon their ideas.
Who, pray tell, is supposed to be the the idea person for the Dems? Is it Ilhan Omar? If not, who?
Maybe, after successive elections where they ran Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, candidates who are not personally corrupt and not on the take seem weird to Democrats?
It's interesting that Burgum consistently says "we" not "I".
I don't think it's the royal we. I think it's recognition of his team and the fact that they're working to build something together that no one person could do alone. It's unusual among politicians, who tend to be very much self-promotors, and it stands out in that environment.
In a way Burgum use of "we" comes across as an invitation to join something, to become part of a group that's trying to accomplish something positive together, rather than just support one individual in his personal ambition.
Burgum was relentlessly positive and refused Chuck Todds pressure to attack. A striking contrast to Governor Walz and to politics in general these days. A lot of people will find that refreshing and attractive, but will he be able to keep it up?
It is a weird group because most of the current "candidates" are insignificant. They are cowards who refuse to address the elephant in the room (pun intended).
The elephant in the room is the 2020 election fraud which installed the current regime. And now the lawfare against those who challenged the fraudulent election (not just Trump) are being hung out to dry by the rest of the GOP field. These cowards are silent. Also, their disdain for the MAGA base is really weird because none of them stand a chance without it. Good luck stupid.
Mike Pence and Christ Christie are paid shills that are just there to launch shit bombs at Trump. DeSantis just referred to the MAGA base as "listless vessels" over the weekend. "Listless"? The working class, "listless"? Might as well have call us "deplorables".
Bullshit. We know exactly where we want to go, and it's in the exact opposite direction of where Biden, Democrats, and the GOPe are taking us. It's a clear direction.
Trump's solid 35% of the GOP base ain't moving. Trump or bust baby.
Walz is a Minnesota Nice, Golly Gee, Fascist.
Nothin’ from nothin’, but Dementia Joe Biden proclaimed the Grand Canyon to be the “9th Wonder of the World”, home to “many ironic species” of wildlife.
Yes, he’s normal.
Walz is a failure as a governor. He has no business on opining who is weird.
The elected representatives of the people of ND voted for a six week abortion bill. It can't be unpopular. If it was, recall the reps and put a referendum on the ballot.
closing our southern border - not an idea
closing down the corrupt bloated bureaucratic state - not an idea
Cleaning the FBI of all mob activity = not an idea
Shutting down the leftist corruption machine = not an idea.
etc
Vivek graduated with honors from Harvard, Yale Law and became a multimillionaire before age 40. He's not normal at all. To turn this country around, we don't need a normal guy or gal. We need someone with extraordinary ability.
"That's a pretty weird group of folks that are going to be on the debate stage.
Non-prog=not-normal=weird. Goes over well with nice women. They want the semblance of normal. Not weird or uncouth. Will Joe be normal enough this time around?
"Doug's a pretty good guy, but he's trapped in a Republican party with no ideas."
The actual problem is the opposite: too many ideas. Vivek by himself has more than all Dem officials around the country. But "the party" hasn't coalesced around a core set.
"Anyway, it seems that "normal" is a very high standard this time around."
Not at all. It's whatever progs manufacture through the MSM. Fighting climate change with $trillions is now normal, opposing it weird, etc.
"But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird" when, for so long, they've been stressing the singular weirdness of Trump."
Why? They've been doing this for decades. Dem's the default. The very existence of the GOP and GOP campaigns is weird. The point is to turn the US into California or Minnesota--a normal one-party state.
"I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal"
Normal means nothing. In the absence of an actual set of policy preferences, the susceptibility is easily exploited.
a six week abortion ban, which is hugely unpopular ..
some serious questions.. ASSUMING that a six week abortion ban is hugely unpopular..
How does ITS unpopularity compare, to say..
CRT?
gender affirming surgeries for minors?
Trans Pride flags in elementary classrooms?
Open Borders?
Our endless war in The Ukraine?
not requiring voter id?
heck! How does ITS unpopularity compare, to say..
Joe Biden?
Only lying liars who lie crook democrats are "normal". Got that?
Taught to you on NBC, CBS, ABC, Microsoft NBC, Blackrock, CNN, PBS(Trump obsessive central) WaPo, NYT, TIME and Newsweek...
feed it to children.
Did MTP ask Walz what he thought of Hunter Biden and his way of using his Dad to make money? Is that weird? Is it weird to advocate that boys compete with girls at the High School level?
Or was this just the usual MTP "Aren't those Republicans horrible" folderol?
...But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird" when, for so long, they've been stressing the singular weirdness of Trump. I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal, but there's something abnormal — perverse — about generating the feeling that all the candidates are weird."
Well; working off "the singular weirdness of Trump"...
We have a group of Republican candidates who have nearly all adopted much of that "singular weirdness." They (almost) all have adopted crazy convoluted language about the 2020 presidential election results. They have (almost) all adopted the weird Trumpian lexicon on our national political divide, and some of Trump's policy initiatives (to the limited extent that Trump had any policy initiatives).
Chris Christie isn't doing that, and he sounds like a normal New Jersey Republican. Asa Hutchinson isn't doing that -- although he is an extremely conservative Republican -- and he sounds like what a normal former Republican Congressman, former Arkansas governor, former NRA president would sound like.
I expect that Governor Tim Walz would agree with me on that. And also that Althouse has taken him too literally in his remarks about "weird" Republicans. Certainly Walz would have some disagreements with Christie and Hutchinson. But disagreements would not rise to a level of "weird." Trump is weird -- "singularly weird" -- and the other debate-qualified and debate-unqualified candidates, especially DeSantis, Ramaswamy, Larry Elder and Perry Johnson are just variations on that weirdness.
easy to be "normal" when you don't have a snowball's chance in hell
If running for president doesn't make you weird I don't know what does. That applies always and across the board.
That said, there's weird weird and normal weird.
Personally I want to know each candidate's position on how early fetuses should be allowed to smoke pot.
I've been wondering who Althouse's preferred candidate who doesn't have a chance is.
I'll pay more attention to Burgum but yeah, I doubt he has a chance.
Hey! Let's all listen to Governor Defund the Police!
Says the guy who oversaw the destruction of Minneapolis.
"I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal."
Sad time. "Sniffs" Biden's record and weird personality speak for themselves. Kamala seems to have a learning disability. Take a look at Tim Walz, J.B. Pritzker, Gavin Newsome, Gretchen Whitmer, Kathy Hochul, Adam Schiff, Dan Goldman, etc.--they are all weird, twisted people. They cannot deal with the truth and want to forbid free speech to ordinary citizens .They are worse than Biden. They are worse than Hitler.
"…but he's trapped in a Republican party with no ideas."
Yeah, the democrats are the idea party: These 14 American Cities Have A ‘Target’ Of Banning Meat, Dairy, And Private Vehicles By 2030
"Normal" these days means ignoring your own voters in favor of the deep state, then profiting immensely via bribes, insider trading, and/or the corporate/government revolving door.
"Normal" is not a synonym for "good."
DeSantis:
You could be the most conservative person since sliced bread. Unless you’re kissing his rear end, they will somehow call you a RINO. If all we are is listless vessels that are just supposed to follow, you know, whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning, that’s not going to be a durable movement.
God this is horrible. Complaining about Trump supporters and playing the "I'm a victim. I get attacked for not kissing Trump's ring". Here's what he should have said:
"I support Trump's policies. And I welcome support from his Voters and supporters. We may disagree on a few things, but we agree on all the big things. I will fight against the Demcorats even harder and more effectivly than Mr. Trump. We are all united against Biden. I will give you Trumpism without Tump. So, don't paint me as a RINO because of that. "
As for Governor Bumstead. He says nothing at great length. He refuses to attack Biden's Stalinist Show Trials. He refuses to attack the Democrats. He refuses to explicitly support Trump's right to stay out of jail and run for POTUS. He just takes a "Gosh, we gotta let the Judges and juries do their job". THIS IS SORT OF THING IS WHY R'S LOSE.
And then we get this:
Leadership is about solving problems. Leadership is about character and integrity. Leadership is about bringing out the best of people. It's about respect for others that have views different than you. That's why we're running.
Every moderate and RINO talks like this. Its code for "I'm going to reach accross the asile and give them 75% of what the democrats want". Mitt Romney, Susan collins, Larry Hogan, John McCain, Jeb Bush, all talk(ed) like this.
We're not into fighting the D's, we're into "Solving problems" - says Gov Bumstead. OK well the D's ARE into fighting the R's. They are NOT into solving problems unless its with their solutions. They are not into compromise. They consider Gov Bumstead the enemy, unless he does what they want.
...Dementia Joe Biden proclaimed the Grand Canyon...the “9th Wonder of the World”, home to “many ironic species” of wildlife.
As Resident Joe will tell you the Eighth is King Kong. Like Grandpa Simpson, Joe don't know nuthin... but he's seen a lot of movies.
Abortion is all they have. The issue there is who can be the most immoral, not who can be the most normal.
It is quite a statement about the grotesque standards of many American women and their male consorts that their desire for unprotected sex outweighs the welfare of the nation and the need for honest leaders.
Republican candidates for President may well be too stupid to point out that abortion is a state issue.
'But it's strange for Democrats to call the whole group of Republican candidates "weird"....'
"Weird" is mild. Remember "ChimpyBushHitler"? Democrats demonize Republicans and their moronic base goes for it.
I live in Minnesota. No one in the media challenges a thing Walz says or does. He’s been bruiting the book banning crap for years now and the Star Tribune and WCCO spread rose petals along his path. He knew Chuck Todd wouldn’t challenge him, either.
Tim Walz is a criminal. He should be in a cage, with a toilet and a television.
Wasn't DeSantis talking about members of Congress, not Trump supporters?
That seems like a fair criticism.
"Democrats are the party of fascism."
If that is so, the Republicans can only be described as the party of SUPER-Fascism!!! (three exclamation points required)--or UBER-Fascism!!!, to better signal the political/financial/corporate complex that is today's Republican Party.
The Dems are largely governing as less-belligerent, somewhat less-ignorant, and somewhat more well-mannered Republicans, illustrating the shift to the right of both parties over the past half-century. Our major parties today are essentially a rabid John Birch Society vs. Liberal-ish Republicans.
Cook:

Only Cook could call the party of transgender, abortion at 9 months, and billions for Ukraine but $2 million for Maui, "less-belligerent, somewhat less-ignorant, and somewhat more well-mannered Republicans,"
Comrade Stalin would congratulate you for being so clever.
Tim Walz is undoubtedly the worst governor in the history of Minnesota. He is an unapologetic liar. He has been working overtime to destroy a once great state—and succeeding.
He does not belong on television.
"... UBER-Fascism!!!, to better signal the political/financial/corporate complex that is today's Republican Party."
Rip Van Winkle Cook recycling his pre-hibernation history unaware of which party today commands the loyalty and the money of hedge funds, big tech, big pharma, corporate media, dependent auto manufacturers, etc.!
And fascism? Republicans? Really? Let's get that from the horse's mouth, shall we. Fascism:
"All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."-Benito Mussolini
"...the political/financial/corporate complex that is today's Republican Party."
I think you have the wrong party there. Sounds more like the Democrats.
The GOP has become the party of the little guy--the savers, the people that pay taxes, the homeowner wannabes, the people who are required to declare fealty to things they don't believe to keep their jobs, the person who needs to take a "vaccine" they don't want, the person that wants to move up in life.
Today's Democrats: profiting today from tomorrow's poverty.
Robert has built a bubble around himself. He thinks anything his dear progressive friends do is good for the working class even when it's bad for the working class. I suspect ole Robert doesn't know anyone who actually toils in the fields.
Cook 11:16: "The Dems are largely governing as less-belligerent, somewhat less-ignorant ...."
Read the whole thing. Then remind yourself of the "red pill vs. blue pill" conversation in The Matrix. The whole left side of the political spectrum are blissfully ignorant blue-pillers.

DeSantis just referred to the MAGA base as "listless vessels" over the weekend. "Listless"?
The working class, "listless"
"listless vessels" ????
When a vessel has a list, that MEANS that it is leaning to one side.. It is SLANTED.
SO, "listless vessels" would be vessels that are Upright, non-biased, Correctly orientated..
And, indeed: Normal

Is DeSantis, THE Stupidest Dumpf*ck, in the history of EARTH??? SERIOUSLY; i'm ASKING
Hunter Biden's tax payer funded Hooker? You're a paid shill for DeSantis; i'd ENJOY hearing YOUR opinion on whether or DeSantis has PROVEN his IDIOCY here?
What is YOUR opinion on ships or other "vessels" Are they better off with or without a "list"?
I'm very susceptible to the argument that we need a President who's at least normal [Emphasis in the original]
@Althouse, I get that, I really do. However right now I’m happy to see candidates who are not personally corrupt. Plus, I have to ask, after living in Madison for most of your adult life — and NewYork City before that — are you certain you’d know what “normal” looks like?
Yea people who believe in the US Constitution and are not neo-Commies are really weird people.
Id say any political party that thinks theres a female penis is firmly outside of being less-ignorant than the GOP.
The last normal-seeming president we had was W Bush. Look how THAT turned out.
Tim Walz is undoubtedly the worst governor in the history of Minnesota. He is an unapologetic liar. He has been working overtime to destroy a once great state—and succeeding.
I'm sure he is the worst. The question is whether the dead-head Minnasota demcorats care. We've gotten to a point in many of the blue states where X percent of voters will vote D - NO MATTER WHAT.
They just don't care.
All Republican candidates are completely normal to Democrats like Tim Walz, Chuck, and Rich right up until the moment they become serious candidates to win the nomination. Then they are the next coming of Hitler.
"Rip Van Winkle Cook recycling his pre-hibernation history unaware of which party today commands the loyalty and the money of hedge funds, big tech, big pharma, corporate media, dependent auto manufacturers, etc.!"
Umm...both parties are deep in the pockets of the corporate sector.
"All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."-Benito Mussolini"
Hmmm...sounds like what Governor Ron "Look at those Gitmo captives squeal!" DeSantis* is implementing in Florida, a bellwether for ambitious Republican governors nationwide.
*(Aka Ron "Slavery was no big thing!" DeSantis.)
People who support and idolize career criminals like Floyd, Brown, Clintons, and Pelosi among others are defining weird.
"You could be the most conservative person since sliced bread."
DeSantis is channeling Hillary Clinton. Great look.
Pretty weird group?
I think Republicans have a pretty good group this time. DeSantis, Ramaswamy, Trump, Burgum. All would make much better Presidents than anyone the Dems have to offer by miles and miles.
Tim Scott is a maybe. Don't know much about him, TBH.
The rest on the are worthless or worse than worthless. But weirdos? I don't think that's been established. What's weird anymore anyway? Sold out and corrupt perhaps, but that's not weird, that's the norm in DC. Maybe that's what Chuck Todd means by weird.
"Temujin said...

To be fair, Mayor Frey helped an awful lot.
" the worst man of all time (well, since Hitler),"
"They are worse than Hitler."
"Then they are the next coming of Hitler.
"Remember "ChimpyBushHitler"?"
"Then they are the next coming of Hitler."
All this Hitler shit has become tiresome. I proposed it be replaced with The Whore of Babylon.
"Aka Ron "Slavery was no big thing!" DeSantis."
DeSantis never said that. If you have to lie to prove your point, it remains unproven.
Minneapolis under Gov. Tim Walz: Minneapolis today.
I suspect ole Robert doesn't know anyone who actually toils in the fields.
@Rusty, I can’t imagine Cookie has ever known anyone who really worked with his hands or came home at night sweaty and dirty from a hard day’s labor. I think he agrees with Klaus Schwab: “You will eat bugs. You will own nothing. And you will be happy.”
We. Will. Like. HELL.
"I can’t imagine Cookie has ever known anyone who really worked with his hands or came home at night sweaty and dirty from a hard day’s labor."
Ha!
"'Aka Ron "Slavery was no big thing!" DeSantis.'

I have a very simple metric.
I will support any and every Republican who denounces Trump. And I will oppose any and every Republican who fails to denounce Trump.
Chris Christie (former US Attorney, former NJ governor) and Asa Hutchinson (former Congressman, Clinton impeachment manager, Arkansas governor, Chairman of the National Governors Conference, DEA administrator, DHS Under-Secretary, NRA President) are (yes, indeed) unlikely to win the nomination. Despite the fact that they are the two most-clearly qualified Republicans in the field. So yeah; I give you your point that Christie and Hutchinson won't win. They should win, and I'd support them if they did.*
Trump is your nominee. Your stupid fucking nominee. Your laughable loser nominee. Bring it. All the big money will be opposed to Trump. All of the mainstream media will be opposed to Trump. The Republican establishment will be opposed to Trump, and the Democratic establishment will be energized in their opposition to Trump. Trump will lose by a wider margin in 2024, than he did in 2022.
*In case you missed it -- yes, you certainly missed it -- Asa Hutchinson just finished a remarkable interview on MSNBC where former Bush White House Comms director Nicole Wallace and former Republican Congressman David Jolly just worked over Hutchinson about his signing the debate pledge to support the nominee. Hutchinson insisted that he could sign that pledge based on a belief that Trump would not be the nominee. Hutchinson thinks that Trump is disqualified under the Fourteenth Amendment Article 3. But they pressed and pressed and pressed him again about why not just say that he would never vote for Trump. He refused. He said that he signed the pledge to get on the debate stage, and that his basis for signing was his genuine belief that Trump would not be the nominee. (The unspoken assertion was that he would not support a nominee-Trump. Just imagine that. Senior Republican leadership, who supported Trump even through 2020, no longer supporting Trump in the 2024 election.)
No one believes you, Chuck. You have basically dropped the facade of being a Republican. Do you even read your own comments here, or you do skip right over them like almost everyone else?
Let me correct this a touch:
"Aka Ron "Slavery was no big thing!" DeSantis."
DeSantis never said that. If you have to lie to prove your point,..." then you are a liar.
And yes, Cookie, I know the reference. Hence my comfort in calling you a liar.
"And yes, Cookie, I know the reference. Hence my comfort in calling you a liar."
If you know the reference, then you know that DeSantis does at least agree with the statement, given his approval of the material where it appears.
