I would like to take a road trip some day all the way up US 41 to Copper Harbor from Florida, starting at Calle Ocho in Miami. Living in the Fort Myers area, I drive on 41 on occasion. “You may ask yourself, ‘Where does that highway go to?’”

One of the best reasons to go there.
That and the fishing. That and the fact hardly anybody goes there.
Interesting thought. Does the person who puts his name on a book’s cover still get to claim authorship if the book was written by AI? And is it plagiarism if my AI “borrows” from your AI?
I'm traveling out of the country, and this morning at breakfast one of my companions greeted me with the most - I've been trying to think what adjective best describes it - I'm going to say "mischievous" plus "triumphant" grin. "Have you heard the news?" she asked in the undertone you use for juicy gossip.
I hadn't. So she told me: "Trump and 18 others were indicted for racketeering!" Probably I should add a few more exclamation points to that.
I am not "out" to the members of this group with whom I'm traveling - a church group, as it happens. Their attitude toward Trump and, very explicitly, anyone who voted for him back in 2016, as revealed by how they talked about those people in front of me (not knowing I was Republican and would have voted for the proverbial ham sandwich to keep Clinton out of the White House - I can't imagine what they'd say about people like me who voted for him enthusiastically in 2020), was what led me to get off Facebook back then; these were people I love and I didn't want to hear what they would indubitably be saying that would make me angry with them and want to respond out of that anger.
I struggled with how to answer. I really wanted to say, "Goodie gumdrops" or "The moment you've been waiting for" or something like that, but I'm not ready to come out to a group of people who will instantly despise me, and with whom I have to live for the next week. So I said, "Wow. Well, we were all expecting it," and left it at that.
Still, in support of wendybar, they are still counting the dead on Maui. The death toll has climbed again to 99 and as of the last report they have still only covered a quarter of the burned area. I’m not even sure all the fires are out yet. Apparently there were multiple fires and as of 24 hours ago one was only 85% contained. Perhaps the book could have waited until all the burn areas had been searched for bodies?
The stories are heartbreaking. One woman was trying to locate a missing roommate. They made a run for it, but the roommate turned back for her cell phone. Another man appears to have died trying to rescue his dog, whose body was found with his.

US 51 has intrigued us in the same way. 1,277 miles from La Place, LA to just shy of the WI/MI line around Hurley. Downside is that Louisiana has no attraction for us. We've been on every stretch of it from the middle part of Illinois to the northern terminus.
Gotta put in a plug for Route 66 which we have driven end to end, famously called theother Road, and US 6, sometimes called the "Other Road."
Near where we live is US 11, with a 1,600+ run from New Orleans to the Canadian border. Signs along the route from TN up into PA reference the 'Warrior Path,' which was used by many of the First Nations (I like that better than "Native American") for trade and raids.
Do we still call them tweets now that Twitter is X? Anyway, here’s a great one from Larry Summers:

The stars were sublime. Clear Milky Way. A shooting star approximately 1/min. Which of course meant a kiss approximately every minute. With the camper, we didn’t need to “get a room” (as reported in the NYT) we HAD a room!

The joy of so many Americans at these events is such a bad sign for any hope of a comeback from this. Their critical thinking skills are rusty, to say the least. What will it take to wake them up from their soma dreams? Something much worse than we have seen already, obviously.
Meade, you probably know this, but you were watching the annual Perseid meteror shower. Every summer during my teens, my best friend and I would backyard campout and find someplace away from lights to watch it for a few hours, clouds allowing. Always spectacular.
There are "pasties" in the UP because the mine owners imported Cornish miners. They imported Cornish miners because they were well versed in explosives.

Those were my stomping grounds. We used to drive the 50 miles up to Copper Harbor to see the sunrise from Brockway Mountain—-meeting in my kitchen at 3:00 a.m. The road east of the end of US 41 was pretty iffy back in those day (c. 50 years ago). We drove once going east on that road to camp on lake superior. We had to stop a couple of times to break down beaver dams to drain the ponds over the dirt road in order to continue driving. (The ponds in question did not contain beaver lodges. Beavers don't need all the dams they build; they build dams because that is what they do.)

I for one am glad that the Meadehouses had a break from the burly-hurly, but I'm also glad that things are returning to normal.
Most of my friends--who are also mostly old wargaming buds--are also hard-D anti-Trumpers. They are educredentialed and successful, but completely ideologized. But they've grown accustomed to my lack of enthusiasm for two topics of conversation--party politics and sports.
In 2008 I told them Obama was an empty suit*, and I haven't changed my mind since. That was probably a clarifying moment for all of us.
*Which is not to say I voted for McCain or Mitt.
I guess I should add that my Trump/R-hating buds identify as Christians and in some cases are very active at their churches.
