Narr said...: I tried to go to the recommended WSJ site but can't access Twitter. Started yesterday or Saturday, and I understand I'm not alone.

I don't have an account myself but have been able to see tweets before. Just thought I'd check--not the greatest loss.

We have had three weeks straight of stormy Sunday nights. First there were 130k customers w/o power (we were among them for two days); then about 70k the second time; and last night, just as the number was down to a few hundred, another 34k. Some people, mostly to our east, have been without for 8 days.

We were able to keep most of our food on ice or in the neighbor's freezer (they have a generator) but had to throw out maybe $100.00 worth of opened jars etc. We defied the Experts by trusting our noses, and cooked a lot of things so as not to waste them.

My wife's Brit friend says that they get compensated by the utility if they lose food to

I did not see it. I was watching the Rocket Mortgage Classic from Detroit GC.

But what you describe is not a penalty. You can routinely clean the ball when taking relief from ground under repair, a sprinkler head, etc.

Rule 14.1(c) specifies when it is that a ball that is legally lifted MAY NOT be cleaned:
c. Cleaning Lifted Ball
When you lift your ball from the putting green it may always be cleaned. When you lift your ball from anywhere else it may always be cleaned except when you lift it:

To see if it is cut or cracked – cleaning is not allowed.

To identify it – cleaning is allowed only as needed to identify it.

Because it interferes with play – cleaning is not allowed.

To see if it lies in a condition where relief is allowed – cleaning is not allowed, unless you then take relief under a Rule.; 7/3/23, 10:06 PM

But what you earlier described wouldn't be a DQ for Langer. You should be aware of the change to Rule 6 made after 2018.

The key change was a new exception to Rule 6-6d, worded as follows:

Exception: If a competitor returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken due to failure to include one or more penalty strokes that, before returning his score card, he did not know he had incurred, he is not disqualified. In such circumstances, the competitor incurs the penalty prescribed by the applicable Rule, but there is no additional penalty for a breach of Rule 6-6d.
