The 90s are back... for people who never lived through the 90s, I guess.

This is Levi's now:

Reading on, I see a contradiction of the assertion that this is bringing back the 90s. Elsewhere on the page, it says this belongs to Levi's "Pride" collection. Does that mean I am cautioned not to laugh? As you know, I've been opposing men in shorts for nearly 20 years. Does slapping a "pride" label on them mean I can't make fun?

And are these even shorts? In the 1960s, we often wore jeans that ended somewhere below the knees. Below-the-knee pants tended to be called "capris" or "pedal pushers," but when they were made out of denim, I believe they were called "cutoffs."

Anyway, I like purple clothes and would like to be able to find more of them — preferably free of sententious politics — so I actually don't have a problem with this outfit... assuming you want to look like an adolescent... a short adolescent. Can you believe that model is 6 feet tall?

Does this mean we'll be seeing sagging again? Because as a ghetto-dweller, I am really enjoying the current respite.

Purple is a 1960s to 1970s color scheme...see the blaxploitation films...

The length is correct for mid to late 1990s below-the-knee "shorts," but the width is too narrow by half. At the peak 1990s jean legs were 20" each, to be coupled with a wallet chain that hung down to the knee.

You know what? I would kill for some of the 90s to be back. That outfit reminds me of In Living Color. Remember In Living Color? Men On Film and David Alan Grier as Bryant Gumble, Fatback the Blues Singer, and Big Breastesess was funny as hell.

You couldn't make In Living Color today. I won't say it was a saner time, but it damn sure wasn't as insane as things are now.

That picture is beyond ugly. That should be kept buried and not resurrected. Men should not wear shorts in general and especially if over 25. In males, shorts are for boys. For woman, especially if they are attractive. Shorts are also fine in woman provided they are not corpulent or have noticeable varicose veins.

Maybe the 90’s are just “here” as we’ve been talking about them “coming back” for the last 12 years.

When are the early 60's coming back? I look good in a sport coat, button down Gant, khakis and sockless (south east coastal style) Bass- Weejun penny loafers. Hold the Brylcleen.

Pride is a sin, and there’s the proof.

The 90s were NEVER that ugly.

Some pantywaist from SF cook this up?

I would not have guessed. The proportions of the head to the shoulders suggest a male significantly smaller. OTOH, the long baggy jeans seem to hide the fact that the model seems to be relatively longer limbed.

Figures.

I somehow wore the same outfit from the 70 until today, Bermudas and a tee shirt. I'm evidently not gay material.

I wear Wranglers. Don't know if they have them in purple.

For the curious among you this particular model's pronoun is "they."

You're welcome.

The '90s was the last great decade. I don't know what this is.

I'm trying to remember in which years mauve was popular. I would say late 1980s.

Doesn’t look like any 90s I lived through.

I worked for Miller's Outpost in the 90s. One of the big vendors for Levis.

I got to know Levi's really well.

That's definitely not the 90s as a whole ensemble, but it is hilarious how looking at each separate piece definitely has a 90s vibe.

Clothing is either functional or decorative, or a bit of both, or not much of either.
This is Thorsten Veblen's conspicuous consumption, on acid. $78 isn't too bad a price for denim clothing that is distressed by machinery before purchase, but it is a price I'm not willing to pay.

There is no human, humanoid, Demi-human, or non humanoid within a billion light year radius of Earth in which that outfit could ever be considered “in fashion.

Ha! Tell that to all the men in hot areas of the country, especially older men.

I was busy working in the 90s. If that's what it looked like, I'm glad I wasn't paying attention.

Hilarious. It reminds me of that part in "Sleeper" where I house guest shows up to a party wearing a Nazi arm band thinking it was high fashion from the olden times.

I was around in the 90's. Levis didn't look like that.

Take old stuff and make it gay. Because there are no new ideas.

Except for the uniform color, this guy could have been following around the Scooby-Doo van.

Ugly, ugly, ugly.

The color is repulsive. Paint it on rockets, and the rockets would self-levitate. The leather in the boots is crying "Why couldn't I have been used in a good pair of Cat work books, not these frothy, hippsy boots?".

Mike of Snoqualmie said...

boots, not books.

I lived through the 90s. However, that's when my kids were pretty young. So my memory isn't crystal clear.

Balfegor said...

Anyway, I like purple clothes

Purple is fine for women or as an accent colour for men, but a full-on purple outfit on a man unfortunately just makes me think of the Joker from Batman, no matter what the style is.

Ah, but are these shorts or modern plus fours?

I am 71+, I still dress like that, including the Weejuns.
