Lovely photo.
I assume open comments post.

1. WSJ has a must read piece today by John Danforth on his friend Clarence Thomas and PBS. Danforth would have been a great U.S. president.

2. With top athlete salaries now passing 50 million, and with some at 100 million, I think R's should propose drastically raising the rate on high end income tax bracket. What are the downsides? A growing percentage of these folks are left of center, it will fight wealth and income inequality, help the deficit and fight inflation, and if we get less of this group, so what. Also this can hit the trial lawyers, investment bankers, media conglomerates, etc. The R's wont do it, we all know.

My final babble for the day. Work/chores await.

In reading Sleeping With the Enemy - Coco Chanel's Secret War, the number of German troops in Paris/France during the war was mentioned. I can't recall/find the number, maybe was a 1 million. While there are huge differences between the Nazi Germany invasion of France and what has happened along the southern U.S border over the last 40 years, consider that over that time period the number of illegal alien crossings is probably between 30 and 50 million.

One is viewed as an invasion, the other is viewed completely differently.

Demographics determine destiny.

do you ever think, about HOW SLEAZY our 'betters' are?
Jeffrey Epstein Appeared to Threaten Bill Gates Over Microsoft Co-Founder’s Affair With Russian Bridge Player
Jeffrey Epstein discovered that Bill Gates had an affair with a Russian bridge player and later appeared to use his knowledge to threaten one of the world’s richest men, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Microsoft co-founder met the woman around 2010, when she was in her 20s.
Epstein met her in 2013 and later paid for her to attend software coding school.

So, this was like, six years AFTER Epstein was charged (and convicted) for being a pedo pimp.

Sure, a girl in her 20's isn't a child, but in 2010, Gates was WHAT? 65? 70?
The ONLY word to describe that relationship is SLEEAZY

Someone asked a while ago if the Obamas were ever going to produce any movies. "Rustin" is expected out this year, maybe soon. Bayard Rustin is a fascinating figure in the civil rights movement, where his homosexuality forced the movement to keep him lurking just off the very front lines. There is an existing movie, "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin," that came out in 2003 or so with great real footage from the '50s, '60s, and '70s of this charming, charismatic, contradictory character. The town of West Chester, PA, where Rustin grew up, sponsored a showing earlier this year that I went to. The mayor's family had known Rustin well back in his day, so she had a few points to add that made it seem particularly local and accurate. I strongly suspect that this documentary will tell you a lot more of the truth about Bayard than the Obamas' theatrical production will.

Excerpt from Matt and Walter this week podcast about the Durham report.

Walter Kirn: It’s though somebody put up their hand in 2009 or so and said, “We’ve just investigated 9/11, and found out it didn’t happen. It was a video. It didn’t actually occur, but all of the wars and affluent activities that came from it are still in place and we need to protect them.”

It was the ultimate “Oh, that?”

And you talk about how the Durham report has landed to a silence. Well, what other option do people who’ve won Pulitzers for reporting on something that didn’t happen have but to be quiet?

I mean, they can’t really argue that it did happen now. And they can’t really argue that we should be able to report on things that didn’t happen as though they did, because the issues themselves are important. Getting Donald Trump was such an overriding concern that making stuff up was called for.

So they’re stuck. Everybody just has to troop on in this strange double-think way in which we know it didn’t happen, but it was very important anyway, and we had to change our system and our values around to accommodate this thing that didn’t happen.

Matt Taibbi: Even if they wanted to honestly, there would be no way logistically to handle this information. What would you do? Would you have have a special broadcast where Lawrence O’Donnell goes on the air and says, “In light of some new information, basically everything that we’ve talked about on this channel for the last seven years, we’re going to have to retract…”

Yes, like how about the one that broke down in the first race, trained by Bob Baffert who a few hours later had one of his horses win the Preakness? Yes, it was the most lackluster field for the Preakness in at least 50 years, but the trophy and the check are still real. Without Mage in there, it wouldn't even have merited a Grade 1.

And Mr. Baffert, with so many dead horses in his wake over the years, found a way to get another over the finish line first. I couldn't listen to the interview once he started the poor-poor-pitiful-me act. Even the most charming horse-doper in the business has finally worn out his welcome, IMO. How many people see him, finally, as little more than an outlaw? But he still has owners, doesn't he? People who entrust him with their valuable racehorses.

7 Years after Obama Commuted His Life Sentence, Man Shoots Woman in Chicago
54-year-old Alton Mills walked free from prison after receiving a life sentence on federal conspiracy charges for dealing crack cocaine.

But Mills is now looking at another possible life sentence following the shooting, which is expected to be fatal.
The woman Mills shot is brain-dead and not expected to survive her wounds.
Illinois Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin pushed Obama to commute the sentence.
As their Ford Explorer neared the ramp to I-57, the driver pulled up behind Mills’ SUV at a red light, Assistant State’s Attorney Kathryn Morrissey said during Mills’ bail hearing this week.

Mills’ car didn’t move when the light turned green, so the Explorer’s driver pulled around and passed without screaming or honking, according to Morrissey. She said Mills sped to catch up to the Explorer, pulled up next to them, and fired shots from his driver’s window.
Multiple shots were fired into the victim’s vehicle from the suspect’s vehicle, striking the back seat passenger, according to police.

Thanks O'Bama! Thanx Dustbin! Without your work, this lady would be alive today!

I read the piece on Buttigieg but then got a stomach bug that is going around and fell out of the sequence. N.B. Reading puff pieces about Dems the whole way through may weaken the immune system. Anyhow, here I am late to the party. I believe Althouse was right when she sensed something strange about the writing. The money paragraph is the one in which Buttigieg says that the Biden administration has given billions for transportation projects and so Buttigieg can fly at any time to any county in the US to visit a transportation project and to meet with all the county leaders. In other words, build a political apparatus. And rest of the writing is intended to suggest that Buttigieg has a working brain. The unspoken thought is that Buttigieg is not like Fetterman, Biden, and Feinstein. Buttigieg is the future. But the subjects of the sentences aren't politics - we hear of Go, of Puritan historiography, of a vast cathedral-like mind, We do not hear of age, senility, denial, succession. Just this young man who is so intelligent that he only needs part of his mind to be smarter than ... than X.

NY Post: Justice Neil Gorsuch blasts COVID response as one of ‘greatest intrusions on civil liberties’.

According to the NYT, when the Supreme Court justices met early last year to hear arguments about Biden’s vaccine mandate — all of the justices were wearing masks except Neil Gorsuch. No mask, no jab, would be my guess.

He could care less that medical personnel treating COVID patients always wore N95 masks and he didn't care that five of the justices were highly susceptible seniors over 65 including Stephen Breyer, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, and John Roberts. Only Sotomayor attended remotely because she sits next to Gorsuch and is also diabetic.

Hanson was wrong, as usual, when he said that the Durham report implicates Clinton, not Trump.

There’s something grotesque and unethical about John Durham’s conduct that has gotten little attention. After getting his ass handed to him by two juries and one judge, Durham nevertheless repeated the allegations in his report against Michael Sussmann and Igor Danchenko on which they have been acquitted.

Conspiracy theories don't cut it when Durham spent four years trying to disprove what Mueller and the GOP Senate Intelligence Committee had already proven to be true. Russia wanted to help Trump win and he took all the help he could get and asked for more.

Through the mists that obscure everything about Bakhmut City in the Ukraine War it seems that Wagner Group, a Russian private Army which was doing the effective fighting in Bakhmut, has fought its way all the way across the city, suffering 10,000 casualties in the process of destroying the city. Having reached the other side a day ago, Wagner Group, incredibly, is now abandoning its prize. Having fought so hard to capture Bakhmut that a formerly thriving city now resembles the Warsaw Ghetto on its last day, Wagner is leaving in the next three or four days. The regular Russian Army will take Wagner's place on May 25. This allows less time for planning the changeover than went into the Afghanistan withdrawal.
It may be that the Ukrainians are advancing to the left and right of Bakhmut, enveloping it, and Wagner, in the center, knows something and is getting out of Dodge.
Maybe it's some kind of Russian trick, some 3-D chess alignment that we won't understand till the traps shut behind the UAR. Maybe something better.
