It seems to me you need a foundation of expectation before you can declare something a "disappointment."

It's fake-newsy to proclaim that something you wanted to fail has indeed failed when it could just as well be declared a success.

At a time when CNN has been struggling to turn around viewership decline, the telecast proved to be a ratings disappointment, with Nielsen reporting just 3.1 million viewers overall. That was a big boost over CNN’s typical 8 p.m. telecast, but a smaller audience than CNN’s town hall with President Biden last summer (3.7 million) and six previous Trump town halls carried by Fox News — calling into question both CNN and Trump’s drawing power.

"... CNN and Trump’s drawing power." I might be interested in watching a Trump townhall, but certainly not on CNN.

They should do one a month. Not just Trump but the other candidates as well (left and right). That's what a real media organization would do.

Stop trying to control the game and just call balls and strikes. They are too invested in the outcome though.

One reason that the recent Trump town hall might not have done as well as the Biden town hall is that Republicans weren't watching. After this last one they might tune in for the next one.

I just watch clips, and there are plenty available.

Did anybody see Anderson Coopers handwringing monologue last night where he used the term, "It was disturbing to see xxxxx......" like a dozen times? What a corrupt douchebag. Lighten up Francis.

CNN seems most butthurt and the laughter from the audience. Trump has the ability and courage to say what people are REALLY thinking. The audience at the townhall was laughing AT the moderator, and laughing AT CNN.

CNN HATES half the country. This is much more than disdain for Donald Trump.

Probably because most conservatives wouldn't turn on CNN, no matter WHO is on. I refuse to give the lying channel any ratings.

The lack of self awareness on the part of CNN is amazing. A feature of leftists and liberals.

The had a "focus group" of about six Trump supporters afterward. The questioner asks, "Does it bother you that Trump will not stop talking about 2020"?

First focus group member answers..."Well that's the very first thing you asked him about".

Of course the questioner wipes it off and says "We were interested in that...let's move on..."

"Let's move on" is a liberal interviewer's default when their hypocrisy just got them spanked and they are losing the debate, and getting their bullshit called out.

All spin and bullshit. This is one of those times the DNC-Media studiously avoid providing any real context but instead choose one data point to allege a dubious interpretation. How did Wednesday night compare to their current average viewership? You Dear Reader don’t need to know.

It's how many viewers Trump's next visit to CNN will garner.

No one dreamed how good this event would be.

'big boost' = A factor of six. 6x bigger than a typical show in that time slot...

It might seem that way to a good-faith observer, but of course we're dealing here with more bad-faith BS. Progs don't need no foundation for nothing and will declare anything as they please if it serves their cause.

She's thinking $$$$$$$$$$.

The amount he'll be paying her vastly dwarfs what she was earning at a media company with huge internal problems.

The Gettysburg Address was panned by local press who mocked Lincoln immediately after the speech, which I assume was because 1) they supported McClelland in the coming 1864 election, or 2) Lincoln was not radical enough for their tastes. OOr, as the article suggests, perhaps they were just rock heads.

I won't bet against Musk's ability to move Twitter forward. I also won't bet against his ability to find the right people to help him do it. He is focused on the future, unlike those who bemoan his actions. In just the short time he has owned Twitter he has changed the social media balance toward free speech. ( Long way to go however!)

First. It is good to see a man who is capable of independent thought and is not subservient. Yes Trump! is a terrible man, a vulgar buffoon and so on. But nevertheless...

Second, why is the government and legacy media so evasive? Americans want to see the Democrats and Deep State Republicans engage the MAGA opposition in debate. Our elites act as if Trump is a massive disruption to society, a fire that must be put out. I think Trump and his people are, more or less, peaceably opposing an out of control government.

The only thing that separated this town hall from being a complete mirror image of a Democratic town hall was the presence of a hostile moderator. The whole left wing MSM should shelve the term LIE because it's come to mean one thing: Any thought or opinion that does not conform to leftwing orthodoxy.

A sitting president's townhall in the runup to a mid-term election drew more viewers than Trump's townhall outside of any election cycle? It drew "just" more voters than any other show in its time slot and far more than CNN typically sees. And millions more people are talking about it than saw it.

Yes, that has disaster written all over it.

I think CNN's big mistake was putting Trump in a position where he could respond so freely. Love him or hate him, he excels at responding to anyone who questions him. He did it as president frequently so they had to know it was a possibility.

Now compare his performance to that of Joe Biden on daily basis.

Like any number of Americans I don't want either Trump or Biden to represent their parties. But, what I hate worse if feeling manipulated by media who appear to want to game the election to maximize their audience numbers but still get their choice in as president.

As to what Anderson Cooper said ... was he talking about Trump or Biden? I was far from alone in having that response. Of course, I think he was attacking Trump but it would be easy to make the case the words could be applied to both.

Again (still) it appears that one party or the other will not be happy to simply win the election - they have to crush the other side.

However, there are other people who get a vote. 24/7 attack coverage will not win recruits. Biden and Trump each have enough baggage already that people will vote for the lesser of two evils in their mind.

Here is a place for ratings that night. The Townhall's viewership that night was only less than the NBA Playoffs between the Miami Heat and NY Knicks. And the Townhall audience carried over to also make Anderson Cooper the 2nd highest watched show at that timeslot. In terms of demographics, the Townhall was the 5th best show of the night for the 18-49 age group, losing out to the NBA and Vanderpump Rules. Before anyone crows about Vanderpump Rules, the 9pm slot beat the Townhall, but the 8pm Vanderpump Rules timeslot that went head-to-head with the Townhall had less than half the demographic as the Townhall, and a million less viewers than its 9pm offering. Fox News head-to-head programming opposite the Townhall was 83rd for the night in demographics and about 1/3rd the audience with 700,000 less viewers than the hour before and after the Townhall. In fact, the CNN Townhall had nearly equal numbers to broadcast Fox's head-to-head airing of the Masked Singer.

Leland said...

I couldn't find a townhall date for Biden summer of 2022. Here are the rating from July 21, 2021. You can see that Townhall lost in viewership and demographics head-to-head with Tucker Carlson in what was President Biden's first 6-months. House Hunters beat the Townhall in terms of Demographics with similar viewership numbers, and those were episodes that aired after 10pm.

The expectation by Leftists was that Trump would be nailed to the wall, but he is a performer and engaged the crowd.

Nobody cares about the ratings for Trump's town hall. Licht is being attacked because he isn't sorry that Trump helped himself. The town hall did well for CNN and it made CNN seem relevant.

Some self-reflection would help the Leftists. The continually underestimate Trump, and get burned. It isn't America's or Trump's fault that they have hate-blinders on.

Trump did very well in a setting he is familiar with. A hostile questioner who keeps interrupting him. He kept his cool and looked a lot more like the 2016 candidate than he has recently. The leftist Media hates him but is drawn to him like a moth to a flame for ratings. I see a replay of 2016 coming.

Ironically, just as CNN was "struggling", Fox News decided to give them a huge gift by firing Tucker and cutting their own throat.

The liberal/CNN problem was that they allowed Trump to respond to all the problems hoisted on us by Biden AND they allowed audience enthusiastic responses.

Too bad, they allowed the world to see Biden has no clothes and the public knows it.

I didn't watch it, one, because I have better things to do with my free time other than listen to politicians.

And two? I honestly couldn't find CNN on my cable box if you paid me. Well, you could pay me but it would be a waste of your money.

Biden is an experienced political figure. He knows how to read the script. Trump is a loose cannon in comparison. However, America was in way better shape when Trump was the head honcho.
I cannot understand why anyone would vote for Biden after the last 2 years. It would be illogical. May as well punch yourself in the nose.

A lie through omission is glaringly obvious in the quote. The average number of 8pm viewers of CNN is not listed. Anderson Cooper's 8pm show draws about 700k viewers on average. Trump's appearance drew over four times that average number. Tell me again how Trump failed?
