"An advance team of Secret Service agents... conducted a site tour of the courthouse on Friday to map Trump’s path in and out of the building..."

"... according to a law enforcement official involved in the planning. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the arrangements, said that 'dozens and dozens of agents' will be required to secure the former president’s travel between Mar-A- Lago, his Florida home and private club, and New York.... [T]he agency will take 'the necessary steps' to protect Trump from harm, including placing agents and officers in a bubble formation to separate him from approaching members of the public. But... the Secret Service has not sought any special accommodations in the court’s standard processing and arraignment procedure, the official said, such as closing off courthouse hallways to the public.... Court security officers will manage the former president’s movements inside the building, in the company of Trump’s security detail, and New York police officers will secure the outside streets surrounding the courthouse and along Trump’s motorcade route through the city...."

Wasn't there a big brouhaha a few years ago about people getting into hallways? Something to do with the US Capital building?

This seems like a mistake. I wouldn't be at all surprised by a rage-filled lefty attacking Trump.

Good. Keep him safe.

As I posted n these comments pages many months ago, it would be terrible for something untoward to happen to Trump that would make him some sort of a martyr to Trumpism. I want him tried fairly, found guilty by juries, upheld on appeals and sentenced to prison like any other common thug from the outer boroughs.

Can we ASSUME? That the Biden Admin, is HOPING to be able to blame it on an Evil M-16??

"Due to the Tragedy that befell the former President.. ALL private gun ownership has been made illegal"
"Also, due to people complaining about our modest actions, of banning ALL private gun ownership..
ALL civil rights have been suspended.
ALSO, due to right wing judges on the Supreme Court complaining about our actions; That court has been suspended."

I like presidents who aren't indicted, Megan McCain central park 5 guy who SAYS thoughts on indictment same court he was in 1 word- KARMA. trump will now see what its like to be "regualr guy" a first for the spoon-fed Defendant. Puts him up there with BIBI ,the Italian guy, and the other indicted world leaders.

Only in America can a former President be made to walk into a building at the beckon of a lower profile DA. That the former President is adored by tens of millions, and the DA adored by tens of hundreds maybe thousands means nothing. We go through the rule of law motions even when the charges are crap. If we believe in the rule of law, we have to endure the crap that happens along the way. For the crap, once unleashed, comes for all.

Prediction- the prosecution asks for and receives a gag order on Trump.

I also predict they will ask for a huuuuuge bail number, even though New York has basically done away with bail.

I wrote yesterday- if were in Trump's shoes, I would push for a speedy trial- like inside of 2 months. I don't think he will find a judge in the state who will do their job and dismiss this nonsense case.

44 out of 45 peaceful transitions of power, and historians, back when they were serious, speculated about one of the major reasons being that ex-Presidents were pretty much untouchable. And the Democrats are willing to throw it away as if it were nothing. For nothing.

If this comes down to bloodshed, I sincerely hope that every Democrat who supports this lives just long enough to realize what they have done.

This is a disgrace and New York is the appropriate place for it. New York City was disloyal in the Civil War and this continues the tradition.

Why are we being told any details at all about the security measures attendant on this squalid little nadir in our nation’s career?

Negative information —what SS will NOT be doing— is pure gold to the wrong people. How f****ing stupid can you be?

It seems like only last week that legal beagle and self-anointed Althouse blog monitor lonejustice was claiming Trump invented the idea of an indictment by the corrupt Manhattan DA as a fundraising "grift".

That lonejustice really has his finger on the pulse of things.

Does he listen? It would be the perfect test case for a 1st amendment challenge to the overuse of gag orders.

Judges should be free to restrict speech in their courtroom (time, manner, place) but not in the public at large, and certainly not for a candidate for public office.

Worse that happens with a gag order violation is contempt of court, no? Again, putting Trump in jail only helps Trump.

I think if they attempt that he'll call their bluff. He has little to lose.

Brian said...

Agreed. Have to file for a motion to dismiss first though. There is a chance. But I can't imagine that will take long, novel legal theories and all.

And given that he's a presidential candidate I think there would be grounds for expedited appeals to some rulings.

I'm not sure whether the Dems want him dead, humiliated, or both. In any event, the Secret Service will be complicit. It is controlled by the QuidProJoe Administration.

In recent years it has had numerous scandals. There is no reason to suppose it is the upstanding agency of old. Democrats corrupt everything!

DNA collection upon arrest is not currently permissible in New York.
Now, only forty-six percent of Penal Law convicts in New York State are required to submit a DNA sample for inclusion in the state’s database, including those convicted of any felony and 18 specified misdemeanors (including petit larceny).3 Youthful Offenders do not qualify,
