"The E-Sports High School... was founded with the intention of feeding the growing global demand for professional gamers...."

"In truth, few of the students will become pro gamers. E-sports have never caught on in Japan, where people prefer single-player games. And careers are short anyway: Teenagers — with their fast-twitch reflexes — dominate. By their mid-20s, most players are no longer competitive."

The "unexpected demographic" is the young people who are simply refusing to go to school, such as "Torahito Tsutsumi, 17, [who] had left school after bullying drove him into a deep depression. He spent all day in his room reading comics and playing video games. When his mother, Ai, confronted him about it, he told her that his life was 'meaningless.'"

A game that only relies on fast-twitch reflexes is so narrow. Strategy, team play, and leadership are essential. Maybe E-Sports High needs to broaden their curriculum.

If the bullied lad learns better with gaming as a buffer, then great. It's better than depression and isolation. The 3 Rs are necessary in gaming, have no fear.

In truth, few of the students who play American football, basketball or baseball will become pro players.

At one time, I taught computer science. Many of my students were absolutely convinced there was fortune to be found in video games. After a couple of semesters, the students would see the limitations, and find something else to pursue.

As one student put it, "It's like masturbation, but without all the gratification."

How many kids today go to high school/college with only the thought of making bank in the pros? E-Sports might eventually follow a similar path should it GARNER an audience and sponsorships.

WHY go to school? When you can just play video games all day?

back about 16 years ago, i asked my mom What On Earth my nephew (her grandson) would do with his life
(at this time, he was about 13 years old)
I didn't think he'd showed ANY aptitude, for ANYTHING yet.. Math, Science, Reading Writing; no,no,no,no.
And my mom said; "Well, he's REALLY GOOD at computers!" Which was totally news to me.
I asked what languages he was using? And my mom said; "Oh, i don't think he knows anything like That"
So, I asked: "What do you mean, 'he's really good at computers'?
And, my mom said: "Well, he plays computer games all day long"

I laughed and laughed. I thought that his grandma meant that he had some sort of talent, for some thing..
And She meant.. He sets on the couch and eats twinkies and drinks sodas.

Well is there a school in your town called Football High or Basketball High or what? If not what IS your point?

Big Mike said...

@MJB Wolf, not at the high school level, perhaps, but there are more than a few universities better known for the professional athletes they annually produce than for the number of Nobel laureates in their physics, chemistry, and economics departments.

Whatever happened to More Science High?

Big Mike, my point is that even schools known for athletics don’t have misleading names like this school. If there was a Football High School in your town academically inclined students would probably avoid it.

Really none of them rely *only* on reflexes any more than playing quarterback in the NFL requires *only* arm strength. They very, very much do include all of the other components of other team sports minus actual athletic ability, and I guess you could equate reaction time to athletic ability in this context. The amazing thing watching some of the streamers who do this sort of thing is just how much information they are processing and how insanely quickly they do it.
