Matt Bai knows he "should care more about Hunter Biden," but he just doesn't.

And he's telling you why in The Washington Post:
... I find it hard to get too worked up over all this, the way I did over the egregious conflicts of Donald Trump’s family during the last administration.

At least he's noticing it and admitting it publicly and feels the need to explain it (or sees some advantage in purporting to need to explain it). Whether the reasons given are sincere, we can judge for ourselves:

Perhaps it’s because, at bottom, the whole affair seems like less of a public scandal than a family tragedy — the sad story of a lost son careening recklessly through public life, and of the anguished father who couldn’t bear to stand in his way....
It is serious business when a president’s family member enriches himself through relationships with foreign actors....
[But politicians' kids are] often haunted by crippling insecurity... [W]hen every door magically opens for you, it’s never really possible to know which ones you might have been able to open all by yourself. They’re befriended by people with agendas, adored and ridiculed by people they’ll never meet. It is not a normal life....
It must gall Biden to know that his predecessor, who never served a day in public service before becoming president, not only shrugged while his already-rich children enriched themselves further, but actually installed his dilettante daughter and-son-in-law at the highest level of policymaking.... That’s real corruption.... Biden didn’t let his son anywhere near the center of power and decision-making....

Lying abut the Trump family and linking Trump to Putin = Perfectly fine for the media to spread.... Because the media hate him and are so worked up about it.

He is full of it. Hunter enriched himself ( and Biden )like a mafia don. Trumps children first of all, lost money all over the place and secondly we’re not prior whore-mongers, drug addicts and deadbeat dads selling influence to Ukraine and others. Trumps problem was NOT being corrupt, he would have known how to play the game.

He is completely false. Pathetic excuse for a “journalist”. Goebbels level propagandist is a better description.

The media is, of course, being deliberately obtuse about Hunter Biden's corruption.

Yes, it's a family affair when Hunter gets rich off his connections.

But that's not how the scam works.

You buy Hunter's painting for $500,000 ... then he rents Daddy's house for $50,000 a month. And that's how you launder a bribe to the President of the United States.

The media knows this, of course.

What do the Trump haters really have on Jared and Ivanka? (Now that they're apparently forced to give up on Trump-Russia, Alfabank, "foreign emoluments," the 25th Amendment (what? what?), etc.) The $2B to Jaren from the Sheikhs--ostensibly a loan or investment? My guess is this has something to do with the Abraham Accords, a substantial advance in world peace, for which Trump and Jared deserve some credit. Matt? Hello? The various Arab countries have mostly opposed the existence of the state of Israel; the Abraham Accords establish trade relations, with an acknowledgment of Israel's right to exist. Some of the Sheikhs are probably grateful for the expanded trade relationships. Hello? Matt? Hunter's only career has been collecting bribes for his father. Matt? Are you there?

The truth, Trumps only carried on things already in motion before winning an election, no one bet on Trump winning.

Trump's daughter is appealing and likable. She seems to carry her wealth and privilege gracefully. Hunter Biden is a flat out degenerate. Not so much anymore. Ted Kennedy was the very embodiment of a spoiled scion. It pains me to say this, but it does seem that the various Bush children seem more balanced and relatable than the various Kennedy children.....The spoiled scion syndrome transcends racial and political lines. (Not class lines. It's impossible to be the spoiled scion of a working class family. I tried, but it's just impossible.) Among spoiled scions, Hunter really stands out for his utter degeneracy. He doesn't have Ted Kennedy's body count, but in every other area of moral turpitude he's stands out from all other spoiled scions.

Of course, the point is not that Hunter enriched himself, but that the foreign actors bought influence with the Big Guy.

"[But politicians' kids are] often haunted by crippling insecurity"

Well, you know, when the Big Guy expects you to bring home the foreign bacon, or showers with you while you were a girl, that tends to make you insecure. And the only way to deal with it, as we all know, is drugs and prostitution.

As others have noted, in all prog tu-quoque rationalizations, (D) is for Different.

Dear Natt Bai,

Please consider this set of facts when pondering your next column alleging to compare and contrast the Trump children vs. Hunter. Hunter has never in his life made a business deal, especially not a deal with other governments, without his father being in a key government position to assist him. The Trump children had preexisting viable contracts with a range of private entities to make and retail goods long before Trump was ever elected.

You may also want to consider the other obvious fact that you are very aware of every aspect of Trump family business because it was all widely reported and subject to partisan Democrat investigations yet are happily trumpeting your complete ignorance of Biden Family Business and citing that as a good reason to remain uninterested. A most curious pose for an alleged journalist.

Perhaps you should consider a job that does not require ethics like an accident lawyer or used car saleshuman where your well-honed skills at compartmentalization and situational shiftiness are prized assets. You are not suitable for public consumption under any type of news delivery system. AI can rewrite DNC talking points faster and better than you.

Ever since Hunter Biden has become a national news story, I've felt a little sorry for him. He had a fractured skull in the car crash that killed his mother. I would not be surprised if that kind of head injury, especially at such a young age, caused permanent problems with his brain - poor impulse control, poor decision-making, for example.

I do not know what the personal relationship in the family was like, but from the outside, it appeared that Beau was the favorite son. He probably joined the family grift out of greed, but I could see where he would be more likely to do it in order to try to please a father who always made it clear he was second best.

I think Hunter is still accountable for what he has done, but it makes me view Joe as an abuser who manipulates his son in order to achieve his own ends, although it's probably more Jill or another family member now who's running things. The whole family seems toxic to me.

Yes, and when that son-in-law then negotiates the most significant change in Middle East peace and politics in 40 years, and I'm being generous to Jimmy Carter, that really irks the career politicians, their children and the career functionaries. How dare they do what the professionals, trained by the prior generation of failed professionals at status universities, couldn't even conceive as possible? And how did he do it? By asking the professionals in those countries what they needed and helping them work it out rather than dictating the theories of the loser American and Western European academic, as in real world, failures who haunt peace negotiations.

Maybe they don’t know what the word “corrupt” means. They throw it around like candy in a crack den.

Biden’s kid has a lot of personal issues but corruption isn’t just a synonym for lack of character.

In any event, in trying to find a single coherent theme amongst their many hate-filled complaints about the Bidens, I can’t identify a single one, let alone one that is credibly supported by evidence as legally improper. It’s like the African parable about the blind men trying to identify an elephant by touching different parts of its body. Each one thinks he has the answer, and it turns out they’re all wrong.

It is sad, because Trump and his sons seem to be largely above board when it comes to this crude kind of political bribery and corruption, to the extent that they could not comprehend that even the "appearance of conflict" is problematic (offer to use his clubs at price, perfectly legal and legitimate, and well-meaning, but best avoided). Trump would benefit from having a full-time "naysayer" advisory position in his 2025- administration...

Gadfly: there were several polls with similar results. A national MRC poll after the election found that 36% of Democrats knew nothing about the Hunter laptop and evidence within about the "consultation" fee scandal, and 4.3% said they would not have voted for Biden had they known.

Considering the small victory margin in swing states, Trump likely would have won if the media had not lied about the story and social media giants had not banned discussion of it.

You are, as usual, conflating issues. The Post carried several pre-election stories confirming what we all know to be true about it now, but with near unanimously, MSM and especially DC, the Times, and multiple supposedly neutral facts checkers declared the laptop story and the information on it implicating kickbacks to Hunter for access to Biden to be either nonexistent or Russian disinformation.

By March, Rasmussen polling showed 65% of all Americans now believed the story; the Times admitted they were wrong about it, and the 65% said it was likely Biden was consulted about and possibly profited from his son's obviously fraudulent dealings overseas.

Those media, social media, and "fact-check" entities stole the election, just as they altered 2008 and 2012 when they outright lied about Obama's eight-year near-daily involvement with domestic terrorists and cops killers Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn.
