"71% of Democratic Voters Think Biden Should Be 2024 Nominee."

Says a new Emerson poll.

I said it 2 weeks ago:

"That's your candidate, Democrats. There's no getting around it. And it seems that America will spend the next 6 years in the arms of the gerontocracy. Snuggle up!"

I'd already factored in my belief that Trump will get the GOP nomination and go on to lose the election. I've decided I'm not getting cranked up about it. I have blogged the presidential campaigns for almost 2 decades, with day-by-day observations and insights throughout 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. What a hell of a thing to become so immersed in. This time will be different. And not because I'm tired of all the immersion. It's different because I can see it's different. We're in a ridiculous fix. But I'm not going to make it worse by struggling. The ancient grandfather will enfold us.

No, no, no, no! Come, let's away to prison:
We two alone will sing like birds i' the cage:
When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down,
And ask of thee forgiveness: so we'll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues
Talk of court news; and we'll talk with them too,
Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out;
And take upon's the mystery of things,
As if we were God's spies: and we'll wear out,
In a wall'd prison, packs and sects of great ones,
That ebb and flow by the moon.

"We're in a ridiculous fix."

Yes, with the Dem lock on voting procedures in key states, the fix is in.

Dems are right to support Biden: he will do whatever they want. Deficit spending, green subsidies, open border, war and more war, stiffing Israel, waffling on China, bribes for Dem voters (student loans etc.), "equity" in the federal government, prog judges.

Nice people on the sidelines will just complain about the gerontocracy and the ridiculousness of the system, and they will be right, but their pox-on-all-their-houses reasonableness gives Dems a clear path.

And I suggested that you not bet the mortgage on that. Even if the scenario you posit came true, the odds that Joseph Biden can make it to age 86 are not high, but will Donald Trump be renominated? In your shoes I wouldn’t bet on that, either. The MSM may try to temporarily rehabilitate Trump (c.f. Glenn Kessler) but Trump himself rarely misses a chance to shoot himself in the foot. Only Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris seem to have a worse tin ear for politics.

Finally, my low opinion of Democrat voters is thst they will do as they are told to do. Only 71% want Biden back as their nominee in 2024? The MSM opinion shapers and the political string-pullers won’t have much difficulty getting that down below 41% by the spring of 2024.

Then we get Dr. Oz vs John Fetterman or Hershel Walker vs. Rev Warnock. I really felt as neither party tried too hard in 2022 and, as a result, am not getting too caught up in the hoopla of the next election.

If we keep election these old people, today's kids will see what a presidential funeral looks like. I was 8 and still remember the ceremony and traditions.

Trump has "loyalists" in the republican base because Trump has been the ONLY republican at the Presidential/leadership level to be loyal to the majority of the republican base voters over the last 30 years.

To defeat Trump a candidate will have to convince that group that he/she will fight every bit as aggressively for all the policies (social/economic/America First) that Trump pushed....and be believed.

Democraticals/LLR's (but I repeat myself) will vote (or have someone "help them vote") for whomever the dem nominee happens to be.

A very different political dynamic.

Political parties are notorious for playing an old game plan until it fails. It's not dead until a plan fails for two elections in a row. Witness the end of the pro-life/anti-abortion politics with the end of Roe v. Wade. Witness the rapid abandonment of Modern Monetary Theory "Trillion dollar coin and transitory inflation" with the rise of sticky inflation.

Biden was an explicit "safe old White guy" defensive reaction against Trump. If he loses in 2024 there will be a reactionary snapback all around. If he wins in 2024 the snapback will be 2x stronger. His death would likely be welcomed by many Democrats.

I don't believe the poll results.

From February 6, 2023 - in other words, just three weeks ago - "According to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research that shows just 37% of Democrats say they want him to seek a second term."

What magic has Biden et al. worked since then to cause such a dramatic jump (and even the Emerson poll only had 58% wanting him to rerun in January) - the steady and expert response to the Palestine train derailment? His resolution of the war in the Ukraine? His adroit handling of Chinese hegemony? Stock record hitting new highs and inflation new lows?

If DeSantis runs, he will be the nominee. I don't think the GOP leadership will have to do anything for that outcome to happen. I also don't think it matters who the Republicans nominate- that candidate can't win. Democratcy has been fortified in enough states that Democrats literally can't lose.

To beat Biden in the primaries, all that really needs to happen is for a high profile mainstream Democrat to step up to the plate with a baseball bat in his hands. Newsom would wipe the floor with Joe "Shit For Brains" Biden- that is how weak Biden is politically. Biden couldn't win a single fucking primary or caucus on his own merit- it took the Democrats forcing everyone but Sanders and his ideological twin Warren out of the race, along with "fortifying" the Super Tuesday voting in March 2020 to get Biden's carcass over the finish line. Someone will challenge Biden- the opening is just simply too big for no one to try to take the nomination from Biden's cold dead hands.

The question is whether or not US Citizens want to put forth the effort to maintain their freedom and earn their freedom.

Those are not swing states, David. Other than Trump in 2016, those three states have been solidly Democrat for 30+ years, and almost 40 for Wisconsin. Trump was sui generis. Any other Republican loses those states by 5%+ in 2016 and 2020.

True swing states today, are North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Ohio, Iowa, maybe Nevada, and Florida still. Here is the hard truth- a Republican can win all of those, and still lose the election.

Yes but I blame the Trump campaign for ignoring the mail-in ballot plan early on. Bush managed to get enough votes to win in 2000 after the election. But that was before industrial strength fraud arrived. Kushner had way too much power in 2020. Trump wanted to open the economy on Memorial Day but was over ruled by his staff (Kushner). Kushner hired the GOPe campaign manager who spent all the money by September. The virus was a nuclear strike by China, helped by their American allies. It worked but could have been countered by smarter people around Trump.

1. I am completely confident that Trump will be indicted before the fall of '24. I sort of wonder if there is enough time to actually get a conviction against Trump, if he determines that his status as a political figure and as a declared candidate helps him to buy some time and muddy the prosecution waters.

2. Where are you getting information that "Voting is not fair in...MI..."? I have pretty patiently done this with you before. You had nothing. In Michigan, a state-senate (Republican majority, Republican chaired) fully investigated the 2020 election and found that no results were fraudulent or incorrect. We are here because so many Americans wanted to "move on" in 2020, rather that address, fight, and correct the absentee voter fraud.

Michigan, a classically purple state like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, was strongly Republican-governed for much of the last 40 years. State legislative majorities; a mostly-Republican state supreme court. Republican Governors for 20 of the 28 years in 1990-2018.

It's fallen apart, post-Trump. The MI-GOP is now in chaos; virtually bankrupt. The state party is run by TrumpWing election-denying conspiracists and no donors want anything to do with them. At the state convention two weeks ago, few ranking Republicans attended. The outgoing party co-chair (and biggest donor) skipped the meeting. This was rich; they had made a deal for Kari Lake to be the keynote speaker, but Lake bailed when they couldn't pay her.

Michigan has universal no-excuse absentee voting. Enacted in 2018, and put into place for 2020. Why? It wasn't COVID; and it wasn't Democratic legislative gamesmanship. Rather, in a popular referendum on the 2018 general election ballot, a large majority of voters voted for the change.

Maybe I missed your sarcasm but the nation didn't thrive under the leadership of Edith Wilson. The US went through a severe albeit short depression in 1919-1920. Peak to trough, the real inflation adjusted economy contracted by 21%. Recovery did not come until after Harding's election. Prohibition started under Edith Wilson and the infamous "Palmer Raids" reached their peak, resulting in 350,000 Americans arrested for purely political reasons. In the election of 1920, Socialist Eugene V Debs had to conduct his campaign from a jail cell. He was pardoned by President Harding. The Versailles Treaty forced on the Germans laid the ground work for World War II.

rcocean said...

The reason Trump is leading is because NO ONE has picked up the mantle and is running as MAGA.

Its simple. Republicans voters need to wake up, and realize the current crop of "Leaders" don't want to win. These "leaders" would rather LOSE, then give the Republican voters what they want: Secure borders, no illegal immigration, no outsourcing of jobs or bad trade deals, pushback on social liberalism, an end to useless foreign wars, and law and order.

Instead GOPe wants to "reach accross the Aisle" and help the Democrats pass their liberal social agenda, fight 4 wars (with russia, China, Iran, and Syria), cut social security and medicare, pass Amnesty, and give the Big Donors tax breaks.

These stupid clowns would nominate Mitt Romney in 2024, if they could.

That's why Trump will win the nomination. But as long as "the base" keeps voting for Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney, etc. etc. nothing wil change in Congress.

George said...

If Republicans field anyone other than Trump against Biden, they will win. Can't they figure this out?

rcocean said...

As for "the fix being in", why don't the Republicans in the key states get off their asses and do something? At the very least they can stop voting for State legislatures who REFUSE to reform the election laws.

Of course all this came about because the GOPe wants to lose, and Trump was stupid. As Dr.K states, putting Kushner in charge of his campaign was a major factor in his loss. Frankly, I don't know what you can do, when the D's are playing 3-D chess and the Republicans can't even figure out their next move on the checker board.

Process matters. DC is now letting foreigners vote. And this will spread to other states. Will the R's stop it? Ask the RNC.

Brian said...

Trump will get the GOP nomination and go on to lose the election

Ann as someone who has studied and followed Presidential elections for so long give yourself the thought experiment: If you were assigned to beat Trump in the Republican Nomination process, how would you do it?

My take: Trump is beatable. His strength is in his ability to give quick answers and adjust as appropriate. He has no shame. He always attacks. He doesn't worry about doing the wrong attack (McCain war hero, as an example). He just turns his "defeats" into wins. Another candidate with better looks, better speaking style, but same attitudes can win against him.

On paper, there was no way that Trump should have won the 2016 nomination. But Trump figured out a loophole. Traditionally, the GOP controls who the candidate is by funding. It's why the GOP candidates often end up being the guy "who's next in line". Dole, Bush, Romney, McCain. They thought they could control Trump through funding. There's a scene in Showtime's "The Circus" where the money men of the Republican party are sitting at a dinner and talking about how they will stop Trump from winning the nomination because he won't get any money.

Trump was able to bypass that though because a) he is a billionaire but more importantly, b) he ran a very cheap and efficient campaign. He used his twitter account to lead to free media on the cable news channels. He was newsworthy, so he gathered attention. People listened because they wanted to hear what crazy thing he was going to say next. It was efficient because it was constantly changing strategies and emphasizing new points. Using ads A/B tested on social media to drive further engagement.

The old days of arranging for campaign ads during Wheel of Fortune and mailers filling peoples mailboxes is not going to win a presidential election. The new campaign has to be on Facebook and Twitter. It has to be ads that are viral. You don't have time to hire a Madison avenue agency to come up with a Daisy or Morning in America ad and put it on TV. You put it on TikTok or Twitter and let it go viral. The candidate has to be funny, and strong, and a guy you'd want to have a beer with. Romney wasn't that candidate.

One such candidate in the Trump mold is Vivek Ramaswamy who just announced a run.

Biden couldn't win a single fucking primary or caucus on his own merit

And that issue outlines how the Democrats control the nomination. Namely, through the process. They use super-delegates and party control of things like caucuses to engineer who wins various contests to give the appearance of a "horse race". In the past that was used by the greatest generation to make sure that the more liberal elements of the party didn't take control. They wanted to avoid the 1968 convention strife and the shellacking they took with Mondale. In the 2016 and 2020 elections the party engineered the process to ensure that Bernie Sanders did not get the nomination.

If Biden is the nominee the democrats lose. They know that, so they will look for a different candidate to fill in the role. Also, don't underestimate Hillary getting back into the race. She has nothing to lose.

Democracy has been fortified in enough states that Democrats literally can't lose.

It still requires a "margin of fraud" calculus. Each election is its own entity. And presents its own risks for cheating. The more cheating is needed the easier it is to find. The midterm elections were an indication that over half the country will never support Trump. Things could be as bad in 2024 as they were in 2022 -- or even worse -- and he won't win.

It's possible that another Republican could win, but not that any Republican could win. Mike Pence? Larry Hogan? Vivek Ramaswami? Cruz? Rubio? Jeb Bush? Maybe not Nikki Haley either. Ron DeSantis? He might win, but it's hard for me to work up much enthusiasm for him.

Biden's Team have co-opted Trump's trade, deindustrialization, and drug cost issues. They certainly haven't done that with illegal immigration, but apparently half the country doesn't care about that. Inflation may be an important issue next year, but it wasn't last year. What's left for Republicans -- the usual conservative rhetoric -- doesn't have the same appeal that it had 40 years ago.

This is the core of the problem boiled down to the nuts.

No.

"Conservative" is not broad enough and not really what we need in the modern era.

At this point we are down to a disagreement about Principles such as Equal Protection and Free speech.

We have a government that mandates "Vaccines" that are now causing heart attacks in significant numbers.

We have a "Supreme Court" that allowed a private corporation to condemn private land through corrupt local officials in the Kelo Decision for corporate profits.

We have the largest corporations in the world actively partnering with the government to censor dissent.

"Conservatives" are going to have to ally with "Bernie Bro's" and "wine moms" and anti-war protesters, and worst of all Trump supporters that they feel so superior to.

We are all going to have to ally and fight back outside the electoral system because we are not voting our way out of this.

We are in a situation that goes beyond mere ideology. This is much more fundamental.

It's far too soon to predict the candidates of the two predominant parties.

For one thing, either Trump or Biden -- and especially Biden -- may very well die of old age-related illness before the election. That's just a statistical fact.

Trump may very well NOT be the Republican candidate. Although he is currently favored in the polls, he will be faced in the primaries by well-funded and credible opponents, of whom DeSantis will be the strongest.

Biden is highly likely -- but not a cinch -- to be the Dem candidate. Many Dems are seriously concerned about his health.

"Ah, the joys of political correctness. Even the president's physical examination can't escape the wrath of trigger-happy individuals who can't resist the urge to make inappropriate jokes. It's a sad state of affairs, to be sure.

But let's focus on the positives, shall we? Biden may be 80 years old, but he's still going strong. That photo of him jogging across the South Lawn is truly inspiring. It's a testament to his health and vitality, and it's a reassuring reminder that age is just a number.

Yes, the gerontocracy is here to stay. But let's not despair. We're in good hands with President Biden at the helm. He's a man who knows how to get things done, and he's not afraid to tackle the tough issues. So let's snuggle up and enjoy the ride. The next six years are sure to be a wild and crazy adventure!"

Instead, in spite of hysterical resistance by the Deep State, he accomplished a lot. By 2020 we were exporting oil and gas for the first time since Jimmy Carter destroyed the US energy industry.

You don't get it. At all. We are in "the pit" right now, and Trump is the only one who seems to be willing to say it, and do something about it.

Maybe one candidate can come out and say that the election of 2020 was rigged, that Trump was the victim of a witch hunt. That the first thing he will do is pardon everybody for J6 except Ray Epps and the FBI. That the second thing he will do is clean house at the FBI, starting with Chris Wray, and then move on to the CIA. That his campaign will do everything legally possible to prevent, expose and litigate voter fraud. That he will ask all political officials, at all levels, to pledge and work to eliminate "mail-out, mail-in" voting, same-day registration, extended voting, ballot harvesting, and all of the various vote-rigging schemes which currently plague us. You want the vote of Trump voters, you had better earn it--by getting mud on you. By facing down the media. By calling out your party. By telling voters that you will fight for what they want--not what the DC consensus wants. By getting smeared and lied about and backstabbed.

The military hasn't done anything to protect or preserve our freedom since WWII, (and rarely before that). The many military conflicts that pepper our recent history (and most of our older history) were not about protecting America or our freedom, but were wars to acquire land, resources or control of resources, to bend other nations to our will, to benefit America's imperial aims and corporate interests, etc. I don't doubt the sincere intent of most servicemen and women, but they are used for the profit- and power-seeking ends of liars, pirates, and murderers in high places. (This is true, as well, of most warring nations throughout history.)

As General Smedley Butler put it: "I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism."

He wrote the above in the 1930s, and post-WWII, we have only expanded our global gangsterism.

When it comes to the shots, DeSantis is clean. The affects of the mRNA and spike proteins will get worse over time. Especially for those to take the boosters.

However, the current lack of voluntary booster participation tells you people think its bullshit. And they now don't want it mandated for their children.

"We had peace and prosperity under Trump."

How did we have any greater peace under Trump than under Obama...or Biden? Our combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan were not ended until 2021--under Biden (though we still have troops in both countries). I think the US is at war of some kind with someone all the time, even if it is not being waged militarily, but in terms of overt "US vs. Someone Else" shooting wars, we are more at peace now than under Trump.

As for prosperity under Trump, yes, things were good, though not entirely due to Trump. Trump was fortunate to come into office as the US economy was on a continuing ascent from Obama's two terms--an economy that had collapsed at the end of Bush's second term. Bush was a runner in a relay race and he picked up the baton from Obama. (Trump was also fortunate to have lost the 2020 election, as the global inflation and economic straits we have been experiencing would have been Trump's burden to explain away.) The conditions that led to the economic slump and global inflation were birthed during Trump's last year in office, a result of the COVID pandemic. (Prosperity and collapse typically are due to widespread conditions--either sudden or long in developing--not always within the control of the President.) The economy is still shaky and can go anywhere, but indicators suggest some improvement at this time, though global events--such as the ongoing war in Ukraine--can play unpredictable havoc at any time.

Election Reformers Get New Tool to Pressure States to Clean Up Voter Rolls

"A new interactive website database is now available free to individual citizens and election reform groups across the country to help in the fight to get all states to obey a federal election law mandating regular voter roll maintenance.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), a national, non-profit, law firm dedicated to election integrity, announced the launch of the website on Feb. 27.

The data provided on the website is designed to encourage some defiant state election officials to comply with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA).
"

[snip]

"Since November 2020. PILF has tried to encourage and assist Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, to remove 25,975 deceased individuals from the voter rolls of her state.

Of these 23,663 have been dead for five years or more, with 17,479 of them being dead for at least a decade, and 3,956 have been deceased for at least 20 years.

After a year of inaction, PILF filed a federal lawsuit to force Benson to comply with NVRA.

In response, Benson filed a motion to dismiss PILF’s case.

On Aug. 25, 2022, the United States Western District Court of Michigan denied Benson’s motion to dismiss.

The court also denied the motions to intervene filed by the Michigan Alliance for Retired Americans, the Detroit Downriver Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, and Rise, Inc., all liberal activist groups.

The Michigan Secretary of State Office does not comment on pending litigation.

Presidential Citizens Award
In an online statement, Adams called it “remarkable” that after the data was shared with Benson, the dead registrants remained on Michigan’s voter rolls.

“It is astonishing that Secretary Benson is so vigorously opposing effective list maintenance,” he said.

Adams said the ongoing lawsuit was the first step to reducing the opportunity for fraud in Michigan elections and ensuring that dead people are not receiving ballots.

In January 2023, Benson traveled to the White House to be presented with the Presidential Citizens Award by President Joe Biden, in honor of her service in the office and her courage in standing up to election-denying protesters, Biden said.

The award is America’s second-highest civilian award given to a citizen for “exemplary deeds or services for his or her country or fellow citizens.

I said before that our last real American election was 2016, and we are bumbling down past Venezuela on our way to Pol Pot.

Speaking of which, this Twitter thread from a resident of South Africa is worth a read, ideally with a gin and tonic in hand, you may need it.

Why don’t the Democrats know what Trump accomplished?
Because the media did a terrible job of reporting it. I’m amazed at how few people realize the records he set:
First President in history to serve a full term and increase the deficit every year he was in office.
First President in history to maintain a debt to GDP ratio over 100% for his entire term
Highest annual budget deficit
Most added to the national debt in a single term
Most new unemployment claims
Largest single day point drop in the history of the Dow
First President in almost a century to lose jobs in his first term
First major party candidate in half a century to lose the popular vote twice
Longest government shutdown in history (and he did that while his own party controlled both chambers of Congress)
First President in the history of approval ratings to maintain a net negative approval rating for his entire term
First President to be impeached twice
First President to have bipartisan support for his conviction after impeachment (which happened both times)
Most indictments, guilty pleas, and criminal convictions of members of an administration
And again, that’s just a few of the records! There are so many more things he accomplished! He flatlined a strong economy even before the pandemic. He wasted millions on golfing (with much of that going back to into his own pockets). He wasted millions more rebranding part of the Air Force to look like Star Trek cosplayers. He wasted billions more on an idiotic vanity wall that’s already falling over. He told tens of thousands of lies. He violated the Emoluments Clause and the Hatch Act more times than I can remember. Plus he sabotaged our operations in Afghanistan, sabotaged gas prices with an idiotic deal with OPEC to create a global oil shortage, forgot what country he bombed at least once, tweeted a classified a photo, and he committed a war crime by ordering the assassination of an Iranian general in violation of international treaties.
Then there were all of his brilliant ideas that were never realized. Like preventing wildfires by raking the forests, nuking hurricanes, and treating Covid by cutting open people’s lungs and wiping them down with Lysol and letting them dry in the sun. Just think how much more he could have accomplished if those godless liberals hadn’t stopped him from suspending the Constitution and declaring himself President for life!
And all the conspiracy believers here, trump won, (no proof courts validated no truth) it was stolen, CIA, FBI Chavez, Dominion did it, and their mouthpiece FOX just told them it was all a lie, THE BIG LIE. See Rupert Murdoch CMON MAN trump 2024 I sure hope so but good luck with that, way too much baggage. TRUMP is a Bonafide loser and if you aren't tired of losing, he's still your man. You'll have no choice because the solid 30% will vote again for him eliminating all the want to be folks in a primary. (and then Sleepy Joe really destroys him this time).GOP needs a autopsy report! oh wait they had one and it didn't work. Next as Joe Friday would say "just the facts ma'am just the facts(not alternative ones they were just created )
