Speaker McCarthy pithily states why Schiff and Swalwell will no longer serve on the House Intel Committee.

The questioner tries to make it about Santos — a ridiculous distraction that McCarthy rebuffs: the lies of Schiff and Swalwell are more relevant and consequential. McCarthy doesn't get sucked into trying to minimize Santos's lies. He just maximizes Schiff and Swalwell's lies. Maximizes or right-sizes.

Adam "I'm a sad fat little goth girl that cuts herself" Schiff is probably going to head home, wipe the tears from his eyes, eat some ice cream, then put on his gimp suit and watch some kiddie porn while stuffing himself with the largest dildo in his collection. Then, once he feels better, will probably start going frantically through the whole house for any TS/SCI marked documents....

...you just know he's got em. At this point who in DC doesn't, right? Being the intelligence chair, he was very conscientious...I'm sure. They're in a secure room, in a safe, right next to the dungeon and the baby cages.

Let’s make this clear - Swalwell was fucking a Chinese spy whilst on the House Intelligence Committee. There’s no way to sugarcoat that fact. I love how close McCarthy comes to actually saying those exact words.

This is the reason Santos ran, and the reason why the media didn't make any attempt to publicize his resume prior to the election.

The media need him as an anchor. He's probably in on the scam. Somebody lent his campaign half a million US dollars. He's now changed his FEC forms to indicate that it wasn't HIM who did that.

And notice there's no rush by the media to find out who gave him those funds.

I'm impressed, if that's the right word, that the reporters didn't try to shout him down, but rather sat quietly and listened to that very cogent response.

I'm also bemused that when I was typing the above into my phone, autocorrect replaced "reporters" with "terrorists" and "shout" with "shoot." Message from the universe?

And finally - I'm concerned that no one who leans conservative or even centrist is going to encourage a kid to go into journalism, since journalists have such a terrible reputation these days. As a field, it's going to go left-er and left-er until - what?

This story isn’t clear at all. Certainly not from McCarthy’s end.

What is the basis — how McCarthy was briefed about Swalwell — for judging him to be unfit to serve on Intel, where Swalwell has served under Speaker John Boehner and Speaker Paul Ryan?

McCarthy just made this a two-problem for himself, and one which of course satisfies the Trump Wing, but which outrages the mainstream wing. OF HIS OWN PARTY! Where his margin for majority is a small handful of votes and where that small handful will get even smaller as long as Rep. Greg Steube remains hospitalized and when Georgia Santos gets indicted.

A pretty decent takedown; has McCarthy been watching and learning from videos of Ron DeSantis dealing with dumb questions from the media? Re Santos, it would have been amusing if McCarthy had finished off by reminding the Democrat stenographer that Joe Biden has a long history of fabulisms and saying he lookejavascript:void(0)d forward to hearing her ask Biden when he would resign.

I like the way that he first put the reporter in her place for being contemptuous of his initial answer, the one she didn't let him finish. It seems pretty clear that he had an answer prepared for the anticipated question - good for him! It earns him points in my book.

A question for the audience regarding the 'Adam Schiff Lied' history: At the time, what was to prevent Republicans on that same committee, with those same briefings, from jumping in after Schiff lied and saying for the cameras: "I was in the same briefings that dickhead was in, and I can tell you straight, he is flat-out lying his *ss off here. None of that is true; He's a no-good four-flushing liar." What was to stop them from saying this, about the Trump dossier, about Russian Collusion, and so forth? It would not have been giving any National Security secrets away, correct? Republicans would get a lot more respect if they stood up once in a while, and even more if they fought as dirty as Democrats do.

McCarthy may be getting some pushback on Ilhan Omar. Schiff lies and leaks. Swalwell is a security risk. But why Omar is on the list hasn't been clarified. She's anti-American, sure, but up until now that hasn't been a disqualifier for sitting on congressional committees.

Meh, Mccarthy is a middle manager. His tenure as Speaker will be unremarkable, at best. At worst, he'll fold when things get tough because he doesn't have the brains to think outside the box, nor the balls to endure a bloody fight.

Tom said...

Chuck, it’s possible you missed the part where Swalwell began banging a Chinese spy, who worked her way into his confidence while he service on the intelligence committee. That’s the material fact that changed and that Pelosi ignored. We don’t know if he shared secrets. But at minimum his judgment is in question. He wouldn’t get a security clearance in the private sector and he shouldn’t have access to the country’s national security intelligence. I don’t like McCarthy for a lot of reasons but he’s on solid ground on this one.

The problem wasn't Schiff and Swallwell. The problem isn't even those who consumed Schiff and Swalwell, making it their entertainment choice. It was in taking their own subsequent votes as part of the entertainment.

I also am totally unsurprised that there are so-called Republicans out there who don't give a flying fuck that Schiff simply lied to the American people without shame. Or that Swalwell used such poor judgement as to sleep with a Chinese spy, and we are all supposed to believe that there are zero other Democrats who could do the job as well as this proven weak link.

Chuck,

McCarthy’s actions were completely justified.

Swallwell was involved with a Chinese spy. Once that became known he should have been removed forthwith. There is absolutely no justification for him to remain in the committee.

Schiff continually used his position on the committee to knowingly spread lies for partisan purposes. This taints the entire committee’s work. If a member even hints at what is in material that crosses their desk (even if the hint is a lie) they should no longer be on the committee.

I am by no means a Trumper but I am thrilled by this.

He stated the basis very clearly indeed. The fact that a prior Republican speaker didn't make the same judgment, for some reason, is neither here nor there. (It was in 2015 that the FBI got concerned enough to make defensive briefings to Congress about Fang, and Boehner left the Speaker chair in 2015. Ryan is the one whose judgment was different, and I'd love to know why. Collegiality or some such thing?)

Yes, it was a good DEBATE between the "reporter" and McCarthy. I have no idea why McCarthy is talking to reporters about Santos. He did say the least amount possible, but he shouldn't be talking about Santos AT ALL. Whether Santos lied to get elected or not, is simply irrelevant. He got elected, and if the people in the district don't like him, they will vote him out in 2024.

The DC Republicans always seem to love talking to the leftwing MSM and winning their respect. Even though it get them nowhere. With people like Romney and Graham its because they are really Democrats pretending to be Republicans. I don't know about McCarthy.

Adam Schiffhead is a liar. A hate-filled leftist, who abused his position on the intelligence committee. He constanly lied about what was said in his classified briefings, and he went after a reporter to get him banned on twitter. He also leaked classified info ot leftwing reporters. As for the other guy, Sallwell or whatever, he's a chinese spy. Or in love with one.

It is a bit much, that is, to accept that you do not know about Swalwell's Chinese spy girlfriend. Perhaps try seeking out NON-MSNBC sources of information if you need to know the actual "basis" for a Republican decision about anything important. As to McCarthy adding to any problem for himself with Republicans, again, likewise come on out of that MSNBC la-la land where wishes are ponies and Democrats ride. McCarthy will likely shore up support and relief among ALL wings of the Republican Party for this move. Taking on a typical diversionary media maneuver (to Santos) will add to his stature and kneecapping two of the worst Democratic demonizers of all Republicans will please the entire party.

I posted the Aaron Rupar Tweet because he had neatly clipped the MSNBC segment with Eric Swalwell's own statement addressing McCarthy's action.

In a story all about Eric Swalwell, no one before me on this comments page had supplied Swalwell's own directly-on-point comments.

So that is what I did.

And here is another link; Washington Post Glenn Kessler addressing the allegations (such as they may be) against Swalwell and Schiff:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/01/18/mccarthys-specious-attacks-adam-schiff-eric-swalwell/

Now I realize that for many of you, you cannot even get past "@atrupar," or "MSNBC," or "washingtonpost.com" to look at the substance of any story. Just look, at the number of comments here that personally attack me, or Rupar, or MSNBC and which make no mention of the substance of facts in the story. Now you can add WaPo to the mix.

Now, I certainly do understand that my linking to any of the foregoing is going to trigger the Trumpkins here. I understand that, and I do not care. Actually, that is not quite true. In truth, I understand that aspect of triggering, and I like it. It set me up for this comment.
