Now that President Biden has brought Brittney Griner back home — how do you think she will/should behave — obeisant to authority or as free as she wants to be?

In our first conversation about the news of the homecoming of Brittney Griner, Meade and I entered a bet about how she will behave.

Has Griner ever been anything other than obeisant to authority? Just keep in mind that the authority she grovels before may not always be obvious.

As soon as I read this I knew that the first thing that would happen is a Joe Biden, "I did this!" press conference and photo op. THIS is why he was too busy to not visit the border.

Brittney Griner offers a chance for him to preen about talking about how he saved, not only Brittney, but our economy and the world.
Going to the border would not offer any preening at all and would, in fact, remind everyone how he is actively destroying this country.

I'm glad Brittney Griner is finally out. This should have been done months ago, and frankly- had it been Trump- would have been. But everyone knows this is about optics. Getting her out now allows Joe to take a victory lap. And everyone will forget his words in Arizona last week, "There are more important things going on."

I, for one, will never forget it. Those words should be an anchor hung around his neck.

Meanwhile Paul Whelan, Marine Veteran, is still in jail in Russia.

Whelan has been in jail in Russia for 4 years.

But the regime needed a "win" so they just sent an international arms dealer back to Russia and said "fuck the marine."

And Paul Whelan is left behind. Makes sense - on one hand you have a black gay woman basketball star who is guilty of the charges brought against her. All it took to free an ungrateful drug smuggling bitch was to free Viktor Bout, a former Soviet military officer, who was serving a 25-year prison sentence for conspiring to kill Americans, acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles, and provide material support to a terrorist organization.

“Viktor Bout has been international arms trafficking enemy number one for many years, arming some of the most violent conflicts around the globe,” said Preet Bharara, the US attorney in Manhattan when Bout was sentenced in New York in 2012.

Bout is a bad dude. Let's go Brandon!

We are not a serious country.

Btw, does she still hate America? And is she really the ‘Best of what America is?’

Gusty Winds said...

She is now 100% responsible for the release of Viktor "The Merchant of Death" Bout, a Russian arms dealer. At least this trade isn't as bad a Obama's Bergdahl deal.

I doubt she has the self-awareness to even absorb that. Glad she's out. She can go back to the WNBA, and we will all continue to not watch the WNBA.

The day after Time Magazine makes WWIII hungry Zelensky Person of the Year, Putin gets his Merchant of Death freed in exchange for a lesbian, America hating basketball player.

Clown show.

And in this holy season, I’d like to think she would acknowledge her dependence on God, who accompanied and sustained her through a dark interlude. This is Charitable Me.

An international arms dealer with thousands of deaths and conspiring to kill Americans on his chit sheet for someone who had to know that the drugs she enjoyed, even in Russia, were a long term prison sentence where the USA couldn’t help her? Biden and Blinken are fools and easy marks when it comes to negotiations. Hell, he keeps desperately wanting to negotiate with Iran (with Russia as the intermediary, no less!) on their nuclear program where they are still going to lie to achieve their nuclear ambitions anyway. He wants to negotiate with Venezuela, which we don’t have diplomatic relations with, to send us dirty oil to help him out of the energy hole he has voluntarily created. In my opinion, bringing back a black lesbian sports celebrity is more important that someone who served his country as a Marine was done to satisfy his base of blacks and LGBT groups, not for anything else. I am only surprised he didn’t get this accomplished before the election. He definitely overpaid for this transaction, just like Obama with Bergdahl. Maybe I can sell him some swamp land in Florida, some sand in Arizona, AND the Brooklyn Bridge…

There are 58 American prisoners held throughout the world not only by terrorist organizations but by foreign governments which has become a global problem of capture for bargaining chips. POW'S, MIA'S should never be forgotten!

There are a lot of people who committed similar crimes who will serve out their terms because they are not famous and left.

Someone up thread is talking about gratitude (sic?). Anyone who expects gratitude doesn't know people. Nations, people, groups, are usually ungrateful. That's human nature.

For example, you'd expect immigrants (and their sons and grandsons) to be grateful to the WASP's for letting them in the USA, and allowing them to grow rich and powerful. Instead, they are full of hate and contempt for them. And want to destroy America 1.O. And criminals who get pardons are often grateful for one day, and then go back to their old ways.

Human nature.

As you seem concerned about 'merchants of death,' I'm curious how you feel about all of the weapons our country has supplied that have brought tragedy to the lives of people around the world (particularly immediately to the south of us).

Here's a comment I made on a friend's fb post this morning about this very issue.

(TLDR, I have a hard time believing you actually care about those who supply weapons that kill people).
__________________
Totally agree. I was just reading an article about how our drug enforcement policy with Mexico has radically changed in the last couple years (our 2 countries are going to focus more on the guns we send there than the drugs they send here). Anyone who wants to get up in arms about how bad weapon trafficking is wrt this situation really needs to do some honest reflection about what the availability of weapons in our country and the trafficking of those weapons south of the border has done to Mexico. If they don't care about that, I have a hard time believing they actually care about this.

Naive questions: Apart from the politics of the matter, or black privilege, was there any reason to make the trade? I mean, if an American citizen knowingly violates another country's strict drug laws, is that any of the the American government's concern?

"It's America. She should!"

Depends on where. Smoking pot is still illegal in many places. But then "It's America," so unlike in Russia, drug laws actually don't matter. Who cares about law, anyway? Unlike Russia, where arbitrary power matters most, in America arbitrary power matters most.

Those are all made by woke companies and brokered by democrats.

The ones killed in Mexico were arms that were allowed into Mexico by Obama in order to enact gun control in the U.S.

Revelations about a U.S. sting program that backfired has provoked new anger in Mexico, where lawmakers and citizens already are upset about the flow of American weapons to Mexican drug gangs.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been criticized for “Operation Fast and Furious” in 2009, in which it let people purchase weapons it knew would end up in criminals’ hands in the United States and Mexico in order to track them and build a case against them.

I'm glad she's coming home. But I'd love to read – this is not rhetorical; I really hope there is – a good-faith explanation that it's not just that the WH chose her over Whelan with an eye toward its popularity at home. That a moderately famous athlete didn't simply matter more to them than a less-known Marine veteran, if it came down to choosing.

As for Paul Whelan, love johnson had it right near the beginning of this thread. We ought to be detaining Russians and renewing our efforts.

The Swiss did this when the Soviets detained Harald Feller. They asked for him back, the USSR said, "Who? We've never heard of him." Then the Swiss rounded up every minor Soviet functionary on their soil and said, "Harald Feller, that's F-e-l-l-e-r," and the Russians said, "Ohhhh, you meant him. Yes, of course. We're sorry for the mixup."

I may be paraphrasing. The Swiss did also make some not-so-admirable concessions as the carrot in their carrot-and-stick approach, but hey. They won.

Peglegged Picador:

"I'm curious how you feel about all of the weapons our country has supplied that have brought tragedy to the lives of people around the world."

My second thought was that the Biden Regime didn't make the Marine or the Teacher in jail a priority and he sent over an arms dealer to score a cheap political victory by freeing a celebrity.

My third thought is that the Russian Arms dealer probably gave Biden a bunch of money because that is how this regime works.

The evil saudi prince MBS, that everyone hated when Trump was President, brokered the deal. Odd how his name is being left out of the MSM articles.

As for her behavior after she gets back. why would she change? If Biden brokered a deal, it was for political reasons. that's why he does everything. Why was the other guy left, Whelon? Maybe because he's not a sports star? She owes nobody nothing.

People have this odd idea, that if you do something good for someone you can expect graditude. Do good because you want to, not because someone will thank you.

Well, when the funding for your proxy war against Russia is, just maybe, starting to get a touch of pushback from the incoming GOP House, ya gotta figure out a way to keep the grift going.

Returning The Merchant of Death is likely to help provide more, uh, "reasons" to keep shoveling enormous amounts of unaccounted-for money to Time's Person of the Year (and, of course, you, as The Big Guy, get your cut).

That's why you make the worst trade since Brock for Broglio.

Then, after all the bitching about them being left behind must be grudgingly converted to congratulations for a job well done.

If that were to happen, its doubling down on the worst negotiation since Bergdahl. It's not just the results, but the optics. Optics are very important. If Russia wanted those optics Biden should have refused.
Trading bodies is just the one dimensional play at work. The battle for power is the real measure. Coming away with a great deal, but makes you look inept, confused, and corrupt, is worse than no deal at all.

It impossible to make a trade look palatable, when its the Merchant Death, for an obscure meaningless entertainer.

Joe did a deal! But when you look at the deal, Putin literally left Joe's pants down around his ankles. I had a patent lawyer friend who said he'd happily pay four million dollars for a dog--if the seller accepted two of his two million dollar cats in trade.

The problem here is that Ol Joe gave up something of real value and in exchange got not so much.

Biden was likely given a choice between rescuing Griner or Whelan. He chose Griner for political reasons and to appease his woke base. This young woman is a dope addict, Black, lesbian, etc. Griner literally checks off every box, she even looks like a trans dude. Whelan, however, is very, very low status -- an "old" White man who served in the military, whose adoring family is desperate for him to return. Heck, Biden didn't even call the Whelan family.

I think Joe Biden is a d*ckhead.

Biden and his state department got played like the fools they are.

And in being played for a fool by the Russians, the state department got what all diplomats crace- a deal. A lopsided deal that gives the Russians what we want and gives us back an American who hates America- awin-win for the Russians. But the deplomats can all proudly dsay- "Look! We got a deal!" I'll bet they even give out rewards for the swap.

Doesn't stink as bad as the Bowe Bergdahl swap though. One step above that travesty.
