Musk adds support to my hypothesis.

Me, in the previous post

Hypothesis: He didn't really have the story he wanted, so he went all out to churn traffic on Twitter.

Maybe he intentionally gets things wrong so his antagonists will tweet to correct him. And then everyone can fight about that. What a happening place Twitter is! Let's all go tweet little bits and pieces and see who wins or who's funnier or meaner. And that's how Musk wins. It's not about getting to the truth, but getting everyone on Twitter, tweeting one thing after another.

Musk, just now:

It wasn’t the government using its official powers, that came out, and it also came out that there was never any legal finding of a hack, which the policy under which the laptop was banned required. Still the entire mainstream press, including your New York Times, simply went along with a rogue decision from a senior executive who did not tell her boss, that almost certainly swung an election and left us with a man in charge who refused to negotiate over Ukraine, a country with which he has corrupt ties, and now we are on the brink of WW3, as Joe Biden has staked our military prestige on a civil war on Russia’s border.

If you just bought a platform which is hemorrhaging money, but which had replaced the old AP wire, wouldn’t you do the same? He probably can’t afford not to.

I’m grateful he’s an engineer and a salesman who seems to respect property, speech and legal protections much more than the ‘Trust & Safety Council’

And much more than Bezos, who probably can’t afford not to but went for the captured WaPo; and who won’t stand up to the woke-scolds and true-believers.

Release your inner artist and cruelly neutral observer, allowing her to combat the humorless feminist within, and the present struggles make more sense.

Time will tell.

It is about getting to the truth, as messy as that may be, AND generating traffic. He may be proving free speech and debate is a formula for success on a public forum.

Does anyone think Musk isn’t trying to increase Twitter traffic? It’s the whole point. This requires a hypothesis?

All media organizations try to increase viewership, readers, and web traffic in their direction.

Musk is now beating them at their own game, and he just entered the arena. Kick ass. So what?

Best part is, as demonstrated by CBS news...they all need Twitter.

Whatever shred of credibility the NYTs, Wash Post, and MSM have left is being diminished further. I’d imagine their remaining audience are the lifelong liberal loyalists wishing they were trustworthy sources. I wish the same. But...I know they’re not. So...fuck ‘em.

There is much more to this. The main thing I got out of this is that there was a long drawn out period between 5 pm (when the drop was to take place) and the actual leakage of bits and parts. During which time, I am sure, the White House and/or FBI stepped in to 'speak' with Elon about what he was about to do.

I suspect they came to an 'arrangement' in which he could release some things, but...it would be hard on him if he released all things. Just guessing, though I have not read all of the released bits yet, and more are to come (supposedly).

Still...it's clear with what has come that the Biden campaign team did ask/demand that Twitter remove or stop the NY Post article from being 'amplified' (their word). It changed the election. Of that there is no doubt.

The Bidens, while selling access to Joe for millions, pressured social media giants in this country to censor information that would reflect badly on Joe. And it worked. It altered an election.

And our country, and the world is a mess because of that move. Think of all of the damage done since Joe took office. My God.

tim in vermont said...

Like the leaked Climategate emails, 'conspiracy analysts' could have predicted almost the entire thing, just as they could have written the emails in the Climategate leak, except I think that most people believed that the FBI had warned Twitter away from the laptop, and it turns out that it was only a former Democratic political appointee to the DoJ who worked there who did the deed. Just like it was former Democrat political appointees to the intelligence community who signed that letter to the New York Times, which also contained nothing but baseless suspicion, invidious innuendo, and a desperation that should the facts of Joe Biden's corruption become public knowledge, we were looking at four more years of Trump, and the Ukraine-Russia war would be put on hold again.

Apparently the FBI had warned Twitter to expect a "Russia hack" to help Trump, who, and he will burn in Hell for this, opposed their planned war with Russia, and so was "Putin's cock holster."

We also know that the FBI had the laptop for almost a year prior to its public appearance, and so knew that there was a risk that it would come out in the weeks prior to the election. So their warning of impending "hacks" and "disinformation" could very well have been based on their knowledge that the laptop was out there, and that copies might exist.

Of course they also had a year to establish whether the incriminating laptop was real or not, and by the time of the NY Post story, they certainly knew that the laptop was real, and yet they withheld this information from Twitter.

I read the thread sporadically as it was live-tweeted. In my experience, with any long, growing thread it's common for putside comments to break it up, but it takes just a little random hopping around to restore its integrity. The other option is to wait until the dude is finished when there's less such apparent interference.

CNN provided a tidy package that alternately masks and justifies Twitter's collusion. Are you grateful because it was well-organized, or because it confirmed your priors?

One interesting sideshow is that Taibbi's account does appear to minimize government directives to block distribution of the Biden laptop bombshell. But others have chimed in to say that they have documented direct federal intel admonitions.

Thanks for providing the space and freedom to discuss this.

CStanley said...

It’s not like there’s nothing to the story so criticizing Musk for hyping it is off base.

So far it’s kind of a dog that didn’t bark story. No one was actively seeking clarification of whether the claims of hacking and Russian disinformation were valid or not, they were only having internal discussions about whether this would hold up as a pretext for the censorship of the story.

The other side to this is what the FBI was telling them and I wonder if that will come out. Musk won’t have access to show the internal discussions on that side though, and it’s certainly doubtful that that will ever see the light of day.

Temujin said...

BTW- for actual reporting, news, and other interesting articles, Substack, and others like it, are in the process of replacing the old journalism model. Who goes to the NY Times for the facts on anything important anymore?

You know who: Politicians. Academics. And your friends who also get their 'TV news' from MSNBC or CNN. They, WaPo and others are all becoming the same thing, spouting the same versions of the same stories, albeit with differing approaches. More often than not, the stories are not The Story, but instead they are The Narrative. And it's funny to watch when all of them are onboard with a certain Narrative who's water they're carrying, and all of us outside of their bubble are watching the real story float right by them.

As such, Substack is booming. NY Times has become a place to go to play Wordle, or read about marriages.

This is such an interesting story that even the Democrats will be able to suppress it. If Twitter had not complied with the demand to suppress the laptop story, the world might be a very different place right now. No oil crisis, no war in Ukraine, no coming food crisis. No or mild inflation.

A very different world. And a very different future. The Democrats burned the place down to keep power for the grifters like Brandon.

Big Mike said...

As I commented on the other thread, the most plausible explanation is that Musk — and probably Taibbi, too — realized that the Twitter servers could handle he projected traffic load while the Substack servers probably couldn’t. Time to stop kicking over rocks looking for nefarious motivations and remember that underneath Substack, Blogger, Twitter, and every other technology service there are real computers, real data storage devices, real cables, real switches and routers, and all powered by a Hell of a lot of electrical power to power the hardware and to cool the computer rooms, which requires its own infrastructure. Back in my day the rule of thumb was that 50% of your electrical input went to power the hardware, the rest to cool it below the point where the chips start to fail (84 degrees F back then). Perhaps in the seven years since I retired they’ve gotten it down to a ratio of 55%-45% through clever computer room layouts, but that’s still a lot of hardware to power up and to keep cool enough to operate.

1) is the laptop in question really Hunter's? (Y/N)

2) is Hunter's laptop russian dusinformation? (Y/N)

Better yet, put the Official Deep State Report "proving" that (wink wink) in a dossier format!

The lefties love that dossier format thing. Its like catnip for them.

In a Ron Burgandy sense, the lefties will literally believe anything, and I mean anything, if its in a dossier format.

Seriously, how you can write that when this story is all about Old Twitter suppressing news for the electoral benefit of the democrats, which even Old Twitter executives now (conveniently after the election) admit was a mistake?

tim in vermont said...

Further context for readering’s comment. It was not of unknown provenance, the FBI subpoena for the hard drive was published with the story, and internal comms at Twitter show that they knew that it was genuine and not hacked. The NY Post is the nation’s oldest newspaper, BTW, and did its own due diligence, something Twitter did not do. It’s been admitted that the claim it was a hack was baseless, and that they did not follow their own policy.

Still readering believes in a dossier paid for by the Clinton campaign, which claimed it as a “legal expense” BTW, and had no problem with basing a two year investigation of Trump based on it, an investigation which predictably turned up nothing.

tim in vermont said...

Even further context to readering, the FBI had the laptop for a year, as evidenced by the subpoena, and nobody thought to seek a comment, when the subpoena was part of the story. The FBI was silent on what they knew. The FBI is Biden’s goon squad.
