"One cruise passenger died and four others were injured during an Antarctica voyage this week when a 'rogue wave' slammed into the Viking Polaris..."

WaPo reports.

They always blame the rogue waves. If you want to see what one looks like, there are plenty of surf videos of epic days at The Wedge. Santa Cruz has a mini version of it at It's Beach.

Not to be pedantic, but I assume you're referring to the giant waves being surfed this time of the year at Mavericks, off Half Moon Bay.

'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to. '"

“The sea is like a cruel mistress. You can love her, you can hate her, but you can never trust her.”

10° rolls at 400 feet keel depth told us something was happening topside. As we attempted a bird pass depth to keel went zero. Double plus ungood. Years later I figured out we were under The Perfect Storm that the movie is based on.

I’ve been wanting to go on an antarctic adventure. When my wife walked in to my den yesterday to tell me about this incident, I knew the chances of going on one of these cruise had drop precipitously.

Sometimes you scratch something off your bucket list.

Sometimes your bucket list scratches you off.

I've never once had the desire to be held on a ship with 5,000 other people who are there to drink heavily, eat continuously, and be obnoxiously American for the 3-4 hours they're in port at some made-for-cruise-tourist destination. Its not how I want to see the world.

Antarctica was never on our bucket list; now it’s going to stay off.

I don't have a bucket list, but it isn't surprising that some people who do, would have an Antarctica trip on it. For those people, getting hit by a rogue wave with a fatality makes for a better story.

But if you're in Cuba in August, you'll appreciate the air conditioning : )

My Dad was the QM on the USS Ralph Talbot and spent 10 hours at the wheel of that ship durings Halsey's Typhoon. I could never lure him out to take me to the beach. Only thing he would say is "Never turn your back on the f@@king ocean."

You’ve just described my idea of heaven. My fantasy is to take a cruise around the world, sit on the deck, reading book after book after book.
