I've got 9 TikToks for you tonight — all things I liked. I invite you to appreciate them too.

1. The crochet genius.

2. A Kardashian Christmas.

3. The joy of Neptune.

4. The importance of routine during the long polar night.

5. The importance of layers when dressing for winter.

6. Let a girl show you how to approach a girl.

7. Celine Dion explains her rare disease — stiff person syndrome.

8. He gets AI to write a folk song about his dog dying.

9. AI envisions the cast of "The Office" as babies.

"It took me so long, watching the decorators." I think I've seen three of these "Kardashian" tiktoks, which is more time than I've spend watching the real thing. I did listen to an interview Bari Weiss did with Kim that was interesting, but I've go no interest in their TV show. (Is it still on?)

I like the polar night lady and Grim. I am curious about the Christmas advent calendar TV show.

The AI photos of The Office babies was interesting, but I don't know who any of them are other than the guy who was in The Grassroots.

The crochet kid was the best. Glad he tolerates the knitters. It's good to remember to be nice to them because they have the advantage of having pointy needles.

I broke down at last and watched an Althouse-recommended TikTok. I wanted to see what AI could do with the challenge of writing a folk song about a much-loved dog in old age, approaching the end of life. Not a bad job.

Went to 3 first, and will be shocked if any of the others move me more. I'm ignorant on this subject, but her passion popped with the photography.

Ok went next to 6 and had to stop halfway. Could only think, do they swoop in with waivers to sign? Or is it like streets in LA, with signs saying you consent to being filmed if you enter this area?

After 3, 4 + 1.

Svalbard has a large coal mine, so all enviros must hate them. The young lady also carries a rifle around so Canadians and such would not like her.

The joy of Neptune was just that:unmitigated joy. A close second was the crochet boy - fantastic and I'm glad he gives the knitters a break. I like the layering one too only because I've seen several videos with these dogs and they always make me laugh.

Wouldn’t touch TikTok with a 10-foot iPhone extender. You shouldn’t either.

Really liked the folk song, but it wasn't AI written. The singer wrote it months ago

"I think you're insanely hot."

Welcome to the life of rubber and AA batteries.

Number 3. She lacks scientific detachment.

I know. It's comic presentation -- expect more of this sort of thing.

My teasers are often a bit deceptive -- for comic effect.

Just to look at this set:

"2. A Kardashian Christmas"

This is a very gifted comic actress imitating 3 Kardashian sisters brilliantly.

"The joy of Neptune."

The joy belongs to a person, enjoying Neptune. Neptune itself doesn't experience joy.

"The importance of layers when dressing for winter."

This is actually a silly presentation of a dog in various items of clothing.

"Let a girl show you how to approach a girl."

I'm not seriously suggesting her approach would work for guys!

But it's not like I'm "rick-rolling" you or something.

I found all of these rewarding to watch, and I wanted to share them without spoiling what made them good when I swiped into them on the app. Much of the fun of using the app is the surprise of what comes next. What I get is very attuned to me, so I get a lot of good surprises, maybe things you wouldn't get. You can be assured that everything I share was good for me. If you've found your taste isn't like mine, you can just skip these posts.

People who don't want to watch TikTok at all should not poop in the comments like Milo up there. We know your position. It's been talked to hell in other posts and other websites. These posts are not a receptacle for your negativity. Take it to the nearest cafe if you must.

The crochet genius stole my heart. What a delight!

@Ficta, if I had known, I would have kept my streak of not watching TikTok intact.

Note to self, avoid Althouse clickbait.

I loved #3. She was so authentic and transparent. Her joy was contagious. And I honestly did not remember that Neptune had visible rings.

In an ironic way, it reminded me of Whitman's poem, "When I heard the learn'd astronomer." Except this woman was the antithesis of that poem.

We definitely need more white women in science!

Great point!

He's like the schoolboy who rejects learning: "How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick."

He can just wander outside and have a mystical experience with the night sky. No learning needed.

Andrew said...

Yes! Thank you, Ann. I've always had that reaction to the poem. Eloquent, but narcissistic. How does he know that the astronomer doesn't love the stars? You can learn about something - why a piece of music is effective, for example - and love it more. The woman scientist in the TikTok video is no doubt fully educated, and yet she maintains the enthusiasm of a child. It's wonderful to observe.

I liked how the polar night woman just nonchalantly brings a gun along for her dog walking. It's just a tool you might need, to prevent being eaten by a polar bear.
