Lefty writer was complaining that he appointed 4 (of 7 total members on the court) conservative judges to the NY top court. Evelyn Woodhouse was going to teach you to be a more effective reader. You will be able to scan pages. The Kennedy administration officials were all Evelyn Woodhouse speed-readers. They taught you to wave your hand over the page, and effect some serious facial mannerisms of intellectual absorption.

I remember it well. Third grade pull-out class - in the 1950's in an old WW2 era portable classroom. I scored some astronomical number. Teachers took notice. It got me through collage (skipping class) and somehow through law school when women were scarce (Althouse era).

A few years ago I picked up the two Victor Klemperer volumes "I Will Bear Witness: A Diary of the Nazi Years" at an estate sale. (Vol 1 1933-1941; vol 2 1942-1945.) He was a literary scholar and teacher at the Dresden Technical University, decorated WWI veteran, married to a Protestant, and close student of the perversions of language under the Nazis (and later under the Reds).

He managed to survive both the Nazis and Bomber Command, and what a witness he is. I had to put the book down even before he got to 1935, knowing what was to happen, but I recently took it up again. The parallels with current events are uncanny, and disturbing.

Not an easy read if your European and German history are sketchy--but fascinating and sometimes surprising.; 11/2/22, 9:41 PM

The media habit of highlighting who appointed the judges in politically sensitive cases is contributing to the loss of respect for the courts. There aren't many problems in society that aren't made worse by activist "journalists."; 11/3/22, 5:30 AM

It's the whiplash inducing swap between "This judge is a totally partisan hack who only ruled that way because X appointed them" when a ruling enrages the Left, followed by "Even a judge appointed by X slapped down this totally unethical request" when the ruling goes their way.
