We had a nice little snow squall at our house this afternoon.

I got on westbound I-86 south of Buffalo yesterday for a short ride to play pickleball. Checking the weather radar prior to my departure, it appeared the snow was more to the north and somewhat sporadic on my route. Didn't count on the wind. Big mistake. It was near white-out conditions. Turned around and went home at 20mph.

The Sky Warden: “An Up-Armored Crop Duster With Rocket Launchers”

Excerpt:
"When I heard that the Air Force was considering going back to a prop plane for a ground attack aircraft, I thought that: A.) This was a sign of their continuing disdain for the A-10, and B.) This was a role better suited for drones that manned aircraft, and thus the Air Force wanted it only to keep their institutional budget up, since anyone can fly a drone.

However, if it’s specifically geared toward supporting special forces operations, then the move makes a lot more sense. In that case, you need the hyper-loiter capabilities, and larger drones can be of limited use if you’re out of line-of-radio-control (say, in mountainous terrain) and you don’t have them set up for satellite relay.
"

[snip]

"“That is an up-armored crop duster with rocket launchers on it. It looks like somebody maxed out the starter item in a video game.”

“It’s got bulletproof windows, a heavily armored cabin engine compartment, self-healing fuel lines [and] reinforced landing gear allowing you to land virtually anywhere. And it absolutely packed with ISR [intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance] equipment, [basically] making this a spy plane.”

“The standard payload is currently set to be 14 APK WS laser-guided Hydra rockets.”

“It’s basically an acoustic version of an F-22.”
It can loiter about 6 hours, as opposed to 1.5 hours for the A-10.

It’s also cheaper: “For every hour the A10 is in the air, there’s $20,000 in maintenance to be done. Compare that to the Sky Warden, which is less than $1,000 per flight.”
"

Wow. Everything is Trump’s fault, and Musk is failing at everything.

Someone punked Forbes magazine into describing SBF's squeeze Caroline Ellison as a "darling of the alt.right." I don't know the details, but apparently they directed Forbes to a single post on an obscure website and the magazine took it from there.

Mindgamers, a purported science fiction film, is a dreadful, incomprehensible mess -- and yet, there are people who give it an 8 out of 10 or 10 out of 10 rating on imdb. Are they trolls, or bots, or actual human beings who don't realize that they are trolls and bots?

Wetlands (Feuchtgebiete) is a recent, truly disgusting and repellent German film (I know ... Germans ...). However, it may shed a some light on the behavior of millennials and single women in the last US election.

My money is on Sotomayor leaking to the WH to give them time to prepare, and the WH leaked it to the press because they needed a distraction.

I think that a lot of decisions get leaked to gov officials ahead of time, as a courtesy.

If the Russians ever consent to negotiate with the people they describe as Urk-Nazis we must be sure to require an accounting on the children who have been seized and taken into Russia. There are thousands from orphan asylums in Mariupol city and from the Kharkiv and Kherson area. Russia acknowledges this. These "orphans" might be the children of Ukrainian soldiers who lost their mothers to Russian shelling during the siege of Mariupol or who lost both parents to Russian shelling of civilian areas for terror purposes. Other children are being separated from their parents or even orphaned by the "filtration" process. None of these children should be rushed across the border and raised as Russians since discovering the truth about their Ukrainian patriot parents could only be immensely confusing and emotionally destructive. Moreover, Ukrainian children from temporarily occupied Kharkiv went to summer camps in Russia last August/September and were not sent home on schedule when the Kharkiv area was suddenly and unexpectedly de-occupied. Seizing children has been done before by Communists in the Soviet Russia orbit. The Communists took 28,000 children from Greece 1947-49 and Russia seems to be re-enacting every brutal trick of Communism's past, including kidnapping children in order to raise them as enemies of their parents. However distant the Ukraine may be, every American parent can understand this issue. There must be an accounting; there must be a right of return.

Plus, I just swung over here from twitter and it's amazing how many "people" are saying: "so now we know that Alito leaked. . . ."

The lefty lies become ever more pathetic by the day.

If you want to know why this Schenk character is launching this lie now, here's the tipoff:

"It remains unclear the validity of Schenck's accusation as the Times, which received a copy of his letter to Roberts, noted some gaps in his story.

Although a staunch supporter of religious rights, Schenck has recently distanced himself with the Evangelical community following his support in favor of abortion rights."

Yeah, this guy went full lefty and decided to become the New Christine Blasey Ford and claim a leak that never happened is really a leak that did happen and Alito was responsible!!

As mentioned above, how pathetic can the lefties be? Not to worry, for his efforts the money grubbing Schenk, and if you read up on his background he is ALL about that cold hard cash, is clearly hoping the lefty cash merchants reward him for his lies in the same way they rewarded Anita Hill and CBF.

I also suspect that the actual lefty on the court who did this, whether its Roberts or one of the other lefties, will be exposed at some point over the Dobbs decision leak so this hoax will be used preemptively to blunt the political impact of that leak.

Apparently the Stanford Academic Freedom Declaration has now attracted over 1,000 signatories. I read it and it’s solid (even obvious) stuff. But its mere existence is evidence of how far we have fallen. Prof A, what do you think? Any chance this will get traction at UW-Madison? Or will it be condemned as “hate speech,” dismissed as redundant, or simply ignored?

Ann Althouse said...

"In the pic of the lake, I see ice in the foreground. So…winter has come?"

That is ice, forming during an early cold snap. But after today, we've got 10 or more days where it will get up in the mid 40s, so that ice is temporary and not the beginning of the winter freeze up of the whole lake, which last year didn't happen until January.

It's important, when you live in the north, not to overstate winter. Right now, we're going into the darkest 2-month period of the year, so it's the dark that is the biggest challenge now. The dark is predictable. I recommend going to bed early and getting up before dawn and going out to see the sun rise.

The cold is unpredictable, so it's important to look at the weather reports and to take it one day at a time, either getting out, because it's beautiful, getting out with proper clothing if it's tolerable, and staying in if it's actually painful. Any given day could be joyously beautiful, and when you give yourself "permission" to hunker down indoors, you can think of that as a special indulgence and enjoy that too.

That doesn't exactly prove it's not true, gadfly. Lots of people attack their enemies in the press, lots of Republicans pretend to be Democrats in an attempt to co-opt the opposition, for that matter; like yourself. The document came from his office. The fact is that the voting machines didn't work on heavily Republican Election Day, and worked fine in heavily Democratic early voting, and facts are stubborn things.

Speaking of stubborn facts, here is a short film from before Russia ever invaded Ukraine, how over ten years, the Ukrainians have taught their children to hate Russians. There is even a part where children concoct a drink that they call "Blood of Russian Babies." This stuff isn't going away. These are the same people who threw bananas on the field when the other soccer teams had black players.

https://twitter.com/ArthurM40330824/status/1593502481077731328

I used to give the Ukrainian Nazis a pass, somewhere a couple of years back on this site I made the comment that I could understand why Ukrainians liked Hitler, given that he "liberated" them from Stalin; that's right, I have been talking here about Ukraine for years. Now I see that they have taken more than just the symbolism, but the political tenets of nazism, the white supremacy, and they define Russians as "non-white," not European. I even saw a post on here early in the war talking about how Russians were a "mongrel race."

This war has been one huge mistake, started in 2014 with our instantly recognizing the neo-nazis after they took over in a violent coup. You can argue about whether we funded the coup, or planned it, but you can't argue with the fact that we instantly recognized the violent overthrow of a democratically elected government in Ukraine.

Instapundit links to a report that the mRNA vaccines are finally going to be studied for their impact on the heart and other potentially life-threatening side effects. As it might be embarrassing for the Biden administration and his poorly thought out vaccine mandates should the risks of heart damage turn out to be very serious, I have no confidence that the studies will be honestly performed.

Of course, the emails on the laptop quickly refuted this claim. However, the media buried the laptop story before the election or pushed the false claim that it was fake Russian disinformation.

It's been getting down near or below freezing at our new house. The ground is frozen and making it hard to spread the top soil around.

The County approved our critical area restoration. We will have the final inspection on Tuesday and should get the certificate of occupancy that day. Then it's just getting the construction loan converted into a mortgage and we'll be moving in.

Hey gadfly, I just thought of something else, you said that there would have to be a noticeable operation and impossible to hide conspiracy to change the settings on the printers in Maricopa. Printer settings are done remotely more often than by pressing buttons on them. My printer doesn't even have buttons. All you need is to be on the network and have the password. Or you could hook up your PC via USB and you don't even need a password. Printers don't have the same security computers do.

Jaq said...

A Python script could have been written in advance to change the settings on as many of the printers as desired. To do all of them would have raise too much suspicion. This is just my own experience as a software professional talking, it's an obvious security hole.
