Jon Stewart treats a Democratic Congresswoman as if she's brilliant because she came up with the phrase "No shit, Sherlock."

I find it an immediate turn-off when anyone, but especially someone who is supposed to be a leader, uses vulgarity. It suggests to me a poorly educated person.
Okay, here's a policy statement:
Inflation is bad. Inflation is always the result of money supply growing faster than output of goods and services. (Sorry, Milton Friedman, or at least his wisdom, is immortal.) More money chasing same amount of goods, equals inflation. Money supply artificially pumped up by central banks, at urging of central governments, due to govt's bad judgment in shutting down economies due to Covid, then printing money to overcome that mistake: that's bad policy. Biden had lots of company in making this mistake (pretty much all other industrialized economies), but it's still a mistake.
The rot in democrat land is deep. Trump exposed them for what they are/aren't but it is too late for America. Wasteoids@DNC.com.
Talking heads.
I refuse to listen to talking heads. It's too much like gossip........no, it is gossip.
......and who does her hair?
"Inflation is always complex."
Maybe to a Democrat.
PS - I recommend Rep. Porter lay off the Fritos for a while.
I remember when I first heard that vulgarity. It was in 1967.
Katie Porter is lovely inside and out.
I hope she loses her election on Tuesday. J
I roll my eyes whenever someone suggests vulgarity implies poor education.
Based on what little I know about Congresswoman Porter--based on seeing clips of her in Congress--I admire her and wish more Democrats in Congress were like her--but it is certainly annoying and embarrassing, (not to say pandering)--of Stewart to interject with an exaggerated verbal equivalent of a spit-take to her use of a common (in all senses) turn of phrase. I guess he can't shake the cornball tics of the longtime comedian he is (was?). Was the balance of his discussion with her more serious, or like this?
Stewart could be legitimately funny, but much of the comedy was just him blowing up in comic rants and tirades. It wasn't what he was saying that got the laughter but how he was saying it. It was the loss of control, real or feigned that his audience laughed at and cheered. So it's not a great surprise that he would find Porter's outburst funny or even brilliant.
Maybe it was similar with Stephen Colbert's character on Stewart's show. It was the exaggeration and the character's cluelessness that made it funny. Now that Colbert isn't speaking through a persona and is more subdued, he just comes across as snide and smug.
"'Inflation is always complex.'
"Maybe to a Democrat."
And simple only to half-wits and Republicans. But I repeat myself.
"That is not a policy statement"
No, [ ]. It is a problem statement. Problem statements can be useful to highlight misguided or simply stupid policies previously implemented.
Oh come on. Using children again as props. She didn't let "these children" have any of those fritos. The whole bag was in her belly before she pulled out of the parking lot.
I think she might have been going to the grocery store too often.
how much of the money in circulation was printed in the last 2 years?
80% OF All US Dollars In Existence Have Been Printed In Just The Past Two Years
take a look at the monetary supply at the beginning of 2020, which showed just $4.0192 trillion in circulation. By January 2021, that number had jumped up to $6.7 trillion — but this was only the beginning.
By November of last year, that number climbed to $20.354 trillion dollars in circulation — meaning that since January 2020, the United States has printed nearly 80% of all US dollars in existence.
no sh*t sherlock!
"We all know that" is this year's "That's old news."
Not to dwell on looks, but Katie looks plastered or like a waxwork. She also has a retro Hazel or Josephine the lady plumber vibe, but I suppose she can't do very much about that.
she feeds her kids Fritos.
yep, shes a keeper
The Democrats kicked off the rapid upward spiral of the cost of living with their disastrous and heedless clamping down on the supply side of U.S. oil and gas.
Or is that a No Shit Sherlock too?
The ignorance of these Leftists is profound.
Wait-Jon Stewart is still alive?
...and she looks like a level 4 on a political depth chart some fired Jets coach cooked up...
The reason that Democrats are completely oblivious about the causes of inflation, and pretty much anything having to do with economics, is simply that they are born missing the Math gene.
So it's not really their fault...
Some people can predict the results of economic policy decisions quite accurately.
The rest of people are democrats who think it is complicated and complex.

To be fair, we've had a good string of central bankers and Fed chairs that believed inflation was dead and buried, so she's got that on them...
Inflation is always the result of money supply growing faster than output of goods and services. (Sorry, Milton Friedman, or at least his wisdom, is immortal.) More money chasing same amount of goods, equals inflation.
I have had people get angry at me for pointing that out. "Aaakshuuully, inflation if caused by greedy corporations raising prices!"
I usually then ask them why doesn't the government just gift everyone with $15,000,000 and wipe out poverty in one fell swoop.
BUMBLE BEE said...Trump exposed them for what they are/aren't but it is too late for America
Sadly the BEE is right. This doesn't get solved at the ballot box. The rot is now cultural. The cancer starts in the public schools and metastasizes from there. It's reinforced to a level of insanity at America's colleges and universities...who pump out indoctrinated liberals who go into "education" and pollute another generation of children.
It's cyclical like a flushing toilet bowl.
The accepted wisdom was that the government could do very little about the economy. It is going to grow and then shrink and then grow again, and the government does not have the tools to do much about that. It has become apparent that this is not true. It may be true in the general sense if the government is generally conservative, but a government is more than capable of completely wrecking an economy. Inflation is almost always a government caused problem. It can also, I dunno, shutdown the economy for months and then pretend that had no impact on anything. What baffles me is that intelligent people would claim this, despite there being several examples in United States history of the government causing economic chaos.
This reaction is roughly equivalent of a burglar being caught by the homeowner, being accused of stealing, and then the burglar getting all snarking about it. I'm sure it was a big laugh in the thieves' guild.
By Stewart's pathetically low standards, she is brilliant.
"Inflation is always complex."
Almost all goods require energy; either in their manufacture, transportation, or both. Reduce energy production and the price of energy goes up. So does the price of all the goods dependent on energy. Not complex, Sherlock.
Could Stewart be any closer to sticking his nose up her ass?
Jon Stewart doesn't have to worry about the cost of things. Neither does the Congresswoman.
"You can use this footage"
Is Stewart really so out of touch that he thinks it would help Porter? Or is he secretly undermining her?
Jon Stewart is an arrogant sell out. It requires a lot of hyperbolic ass kissing like Stewart is doing here. It's the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome. Common among non-individualistic sheep who feel worthless without group validation. Common among US Liberals and Democrats. Very common on college campuses.
It's destroyed comedy and humor in the US. Saturday Night Live and late night network shows used to be for everyone to enjoy. They were centralized cultural events. Who doesn't like a stupid pet trick??
Now they are only meant for liberals who despise the other half of the country. They spew hatred and lies. Their "comedy" no longer has an underbelly of truth.
That chick is disgusting in word and comport. Be glad you don't live in SoCal where we are assaulted by her stupid commercials.
I AGREE your mama told you shit was a bad word, just say "grab em by the pussy" much better!
Profanity can be well used or poorly used. It's okay here, and it's not nothing to use the informal register in politics. It seemed like a good summary to me on her part.
no no no no
ELECTION DENIERS!
That's what moms and dads are worried about.
pffft.
Interesting that Ds think that everything else that is truly complicated is simple-
Electricity comes out of a wall socket.
Fritos (and other food) comes from the grocery store.
Gasoline comes form the corner filling station.
Education happens at the local school.
They still seem pretty dim on where babies come from, and are totally ignorant of the wisdom of Milton F., as quoted by Mr. Marshall above.
Stewart and his guest know their liberal audience are morons who do not understand what causes inflation. Nor do they care. The Fed money printing, the wasted gov't spending, and purposeful strangling of the energy supply for "green" bullshit lies are all at the feet of Democrats and college education suburban white women.
Now perhaps some of those white women realize it's getting cold outside and they need to heat their home to care for the babies they didn't abort. All of a sudden those $1200 COVID checks don't seem so worth it anymore when you realize it just drove everything up $2400 at the grocery store.
The word "shit" is in the top five useful words in the English language. I don't care if this Democrat Congresswoman uses it. And I don't care that beta cuck Jon Stewart pretends to fawn over her.
But...I do care that the two people in the clip are completely full of shit. There is no easier way to describe them. "Full of shit" is the perfect fit.
Joy Reid actually said that people didn't use the word "inflation" until Republicans popularized it in the Biden era.
“The only people I ever hear use the word ‘inflation’ are journalists and economists,” she answered. “So, that is not part of the normal lexicon of the way people talk.”
...
So, it’s interesting that Republicans are doing something they don’t normally do, which is not use the common tongue, not use just common English like they sort of do on their campaigns like they do with crime.
But what they’ve done is they’ve taught people the word inflation. Most people who would’ve never used that word ever in their lives are using it now because they’ve been taught it, including on TV, including in newspapers. They’ve been taught this word.
And yet, we received a flyer in Hershey, Pa., from the Democrats, and it's all about how the GOP is going to pass a nationwide ban on abortion. I kid you not.
Not a word in there about inflation. I wonder why.
Do democrats respond to this? I find is condescending and boring.
Progressive prices, inane energy policy, rabid diversity, elective abortion, etc.
I mean, she could be handing a little kid a shirt that says TRUMP IS A JAGOFF like the soon to be Senator Fetterman.
“And simple only to half-wits and Republicans. But I repeat myself.”
No shit Sherlock and I say that with affection. We need more Robert Cooks here.
LOL
I was listening to news radio the other day and they made a reference to the "upcoming recession."
Got that - the upcoming recession.
As soon as the R's takes over (if they can withstand the cheat machine) we will be in a recession - officially... and all this bad stuff given to us by the chi com virus and democrats insane money printing/ free-bee handouts, and insane congressional spending - will magically be the fault of the R-party.
Achilles: "Some people can predict the results of economic policy decisions quite accurately.
The rest of people are democrats who think it is complicated and complex."
Indeed, it is complicated and complex only to half-wits, marxists (like Robert Cook) and New Soviet Democraticals. But I repeat myself.
The left thought James Carville brilliant for coming up with the phrase "It's the economy, stupid", and it actually was brilliant. In 4 words, it drove home that the economy was a political problem, that the problem was very important to voters, and the suggestion that problem with the economy was the incumbent President George H.W. Bush. 4 words that carried a lot to unpack for someone arguing against the concept.
The brilliance now is "Inflation is bad", not "No, shit Sherlock". None of the three phrases are policy statements, but two of them are effective in casting the political problem faced by the incumbent. The other one, "No, shit Sherlock", is dismissive of the problem, and ultimately gives no reason why anyone should vote for the person making the argument. At best, it suggests Representative Porter can do nothing about inflation, and if that's the case, what good is she to a voter?
John Stewart is at his best when he wears the clown nose.
Dinky Dau filling in the Moron gap in gadfly's absence.
I guess someone on the left has to do it.
And in related news, the Paul Pelosi story gets more and more suspicious.
https://twitter.com/redsteeze/status/1588599465069641728
I'm pretty tired of snark as a substitute for wit.
Also, it wasn't that long ago that the Dem/media complex was telling us that:
1. Inflation is transitory
2. Hey, inflation is actually good!
Having failed on both of those arguments now they want to act like it's some random development which they had no role in creating.
"Jon Stewart treats a Democratic Congresswoman as if she's brilliant because she came up with the phrase "No shit, Sherlock.""
That's because by prog standards she is brilliant.
In drawing attention to herself by saying "no shit, Sherlock. Of course inflation’s bad. I too go to the grocery store," she avoids mentioning who really gets the "shit end of the stick."
Stewart is a huge disappointment to me. Years ago, about when his political turn on his late night show was becoming obnoxious, I heard him do a serious interview of some political person. Someone he had significant policy disagreements with.
It was brilliant. I learned all about the interviewee's strengths and weaknesses. I admired Stewart's deft maneuvering and follow-up questioning. He had clearly done a lot of homework.
It was the kind of performance, unexpected, that one brings into conversation - "Did you see...?"
But since? Nothing. I guess that work doesn't pay.
Inflation is simple, like the law of gravity, and no amount of complex reasoning or mathematical gyrations is going to keep the apple from falling to the ground, or inflation from happening when the government spends too much money, or keeps interest rates too low for too long.
You can say that inflation is partly due to energy prices, but Joe Biden has moved to restrict the supply of oil since hour one of his presidency, which he has been compensating for by draining our strategic oil reserves, a policy that cannot continue indefinitely, so yeah, overspending is not *entirely* to blame.
Oh yeah, and Joe Biden picked a war with Russia, and has put China on a war footing over Taiwan, and now seems like he wants to pick a fight with Iran, which would immediately send oil to $200 a barrel, so sure there are a lot of factors involved. Most of them due to Biden’s poor decisions, but the last inflationary cycle we went through also was about a president who promised “guns and butter,” so it’s not like Biden is inventing new mistakes to make.
If the Democrats get a shellacking next week, it will be richly deserved.
I would be interested in hearing what complexities I missed or got wrong though, Robert.
Just one or two missing complexities would do. Here is your chance to teach us the errors of our ways.
Was his clown nose off or was his clown nose on... I can't tell anymore.

You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can.
Our host points out the usefulness of a certain four letter word.
Let me clean up Ms. Porter's expression "No Tofu Twinkie!" Ms. Porter is the epitome of all that's bad about Southern California Democrats (although she does not rise to the level of Adam Schiff's awfulness). But she is fund raising machine--so the party loves her.

Could it have been Ed Conard? That interview spilled over to the internet. The entirety of the on/off show interview goes on for a Joe Rogan amount of time...

Yes, it is, now explain why you pumped it up with massive spending bills, originating, as the Constitution requires, in the House.

Woo! The matronly genetic throwback vibe is strong with Rep. Porter!

Was it this all a bunch of shit Sherlock back in those 2021 "yay! Inflation!" leftist fanatsy days, Ms Porter?
"In drawing attention to herself by saying 'no shit, Sherlock. Of course inflation’s bad. I too go to the grocery store,' she avoids mentioning who really gets the 'shit end of the stick.'"
No, by referring to herself--a single mother of three school age children--she identifies a major demographic that gets the shit end of the stick. She's expressing the reality and feelings that working people experience.
Biden’s policies have created such high inflation that abortion is now unaffordable for all but rich women.
I would be interested in hearing what complexities I missed or got wrong though, Robert.
"Just one or two missing complexities would do. Here is your chance to teach us the errors of our ways."
You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can.
It's always the fault of the Kulaks or the corporations, never the terrible economic policies of the Left.
"You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can."
This comment of mine, though true, is also somewhat flippant. So, I have linked one article discussing the recent price increases on oil. The takeaway is that unexpected and interacting global events, along with the business and political reactions to these interacting and rippling global events can lead to rises in prices on particular or all goods and services.
Another complexity is the question: how do governments act to curb inflation without doing undo harm to the public? Right now, it seems the Fed's plans are intended to cause economic pain to working Americans.
The Bee Has It for you... https://twitter.com/i/status/1588274340399042560
Robert Cook:
You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can.
So, is that to say inflation is at least in part the result of corporations raising their prices wantonly to sate their greed? I just checked and inflation was around 2% from 2016 to 2020, then shot up to 7% and 8% in 2021 and 2022 respectively. So, how much of that increase in inflation was price gouging, and why did these corporations wait till 2021 to start gouging at that level?
It's not inflation when a hurricane strikes and a bag of ice costs $20. It's scarcity meets need and $20 clears the market.
With everything shut down there's a lot of scarcity of lots of stuff and people bidding for the stuff. The price that clears the market goes up.
That's what we've got. So long as the Fed doesn't accommodate wage increases to cover the price rise, we're good. If they accommodate wage increases to cover the shortage price rises, then the price has to rise further to allocate the short goods, and we have an actual inflation.
Government spending doesn't cause inflation if they borrow the dollars to spend That takes the dollars out of the bidding war before it puts them back in. The reason the price rises were sudden was that the shortage and inclination to spend rather than save were sudden.
At the moment the Fed is retiring dollars - selling debt and burning the proceeds. That results in an interest rate increase when the market responds, bidding for dollars against the Fed. The Fed uses the resulting rate to govern how fast it absorbs dollars. They meet from time to time and determine a new target interest rate, if more is needed or less.
I think Steward just knows how much better that segment was than any of her current ads which are terrible and out of touch with reality. I live in CA and we are constantly bombarded with them.
Heard that one in the earcly '60s. Another fave... "Smooth Move X-Lax".
You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can.
If that's the case, why don't we always have out-of-control inflation? You know, because ... they can.
Why now and not, oh, two-three years ago?
Watched the video clip. She seems nice.
Just back from the grocery store when I read this post. It was 4.99 for a large bag of Fritos or potato chips. Guess she got two. Those bags used to be $3.50. Point is that Joe Biden is denying that a problem exists and yet here we are - even a Dem is reporting that a bag of fun food that kids devour in minutes has gone way up. And yet she has no policy, no criticism of Biden and his budgets, no criticism of Fed policy? No shit Sherlock, she's a Dem, they have no policy.
"You think you're hot shit" is a common put-down, but if you really are hot shit is that a good thing?
Robert Cook: "She's expressing the reality and feelings that working people experience."
A marxist/democratical (but I repeat myself) trying to convey empathy with the kulaks/Bourgeoisie. Adorable. And so sincere as well!
"No shit Sherlock", is dismissive of the problem, and ultimately gives no reason why anyone should vote for the person making the argument.
Good point. This is just a lib's version of the "owning the libs" that is supposed to be a bad thing and a distraction.
Inga: "No shit Sherlock and I say that with affection. We need more Robert Cooks here."
There are lots of Robert Cooks....in Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, China, etc.
Why don't you put out a "help wanted" ad in the local Workers Collective Pamphlet?
Stewart has never struck my as very bright.
Bright enough to hire good writers, but that's a low bar...
Well shit boy howdy! Robert Cook blames greedy corporations. I never saw that coming... "Because they can" says he. Yes, and why is it they can raise prices? Is it because there is more money in circulation chasing their products and services? And also the fact that their inputs cost more every week? It all comes back to the points raised by Tim.
Christ Robert, you're a smart guy, that is obvious. You are also consistent and I enjoy reading your comments (though I seldom agree). But this is just silly and poorly considered.
Biden’s policies have created such high inflation that abortion is now unaffordable for all but rich women.
Here's a nice example of the moronic Inga/gadfly left:
Joy Reid: "Republicans “taught people the word inflation. Most people…have never used that word ever in their lives…”
LOL
Actually, she's mangling the original quote, from the bootlegged memoir, "Holmes Underground." As I recall, Watson looked up from his rolled up ten pound note, saying with bated breath "Good shit, Sherlock."
Is that a Toga she is wearing or a Mu Mu?
Yes definitely mocking the legitimate kitchen-table concerns of the families of this country which your corrupt and incompetent party caused is a winning strategy. Keep it up, sis.
I love when Democrats still have no answer for their bad policies so they make it an 'everybody knows this' or 'everybody does this' or 'everybody says this' thing, when that is not even close to the truth.
We did not have this before Joe took office and the Dems had complete control. It is on them and their horrid policies. She can talk to Jon Stewart for some cheering all she wants. But she's failed. Her party has failed. And the country is going to request- no...demand- a change.
We were saying that when I was 12. And that was many years ago.
Joy Reid apparently wasn't around in the 70's. No joke.
The tofu of cursing reminds me of the scene in The Wire where Bump and McNulty do an entire 5-minute murder scene investigation using no words other than variants on the word "fuck."
Joy Reid: "Republicans “taught people the word inflation. Most people…have never used that word ever in their lives…”
Well, everybody who wasn't alive when the last Inflation King (who remembers Jimmy Carter (D)?) was in office, anyway...
From the article linked by Robert Cook:
In short, the administration has been less friendly to oil production and transport than its predecessor, at a time when markets are undersupplied.
And - from the same article - markets are undersupplied because of pent-up demand (versus the technical difficulties involved in ramping up production) resulting from... COVID policies pushed by Democrats (reluctantly gone along with by Trump at first, but then recall that he was all for reopening the economy far earlier than Democrats in Congress and D governors were, and they demonized him and anyone else who dared to suggest that, for instance, masks weren't cutting it and there was no need to keep schools closed). Oh, and sanctions against Russia, which further constrain global supply. And a desire on the party of the administration to start transitioning the American economy away from oil.
Cutting to the chase - every reason for high fuel prices in that article is a Democrat-led policy. Not, perhaps, what Cook wanted us to get out of the article.
The Jon Stewarts of the world are praying for a Republican sweep so that they can be the 'beacons of sanity' in dark senseless times.
Oh hey, Robert Cook - how come, if those greedy corporations hiking up their prices "because, you know, they can" is a thing, why would they ever do anything else?
Why, for instance, was the gas at my local gas station ever $1.99 (as it was in 2020) when it had been as high as almost $3.00 previously? Is it just their consciences sometimes forcing them to lower the prices that they'd otherwise ceaselessly raise?
I know you'd like to believe corporate greed is a primary cause of economic troubles. But, dude, it just isn't. Inflation is always always, always, a money problem. Talk with the MMT people about their fantasies and maybe you'll be able to put this specter of yours to test.
"so that they can be the 'beacons of sanity' in dark senseless times."
Who better for a beacon, than those who caused them to be needed?
@gilbar
0% OF All US Dollars In Existence Have Been Printed In Just The Past Two Years
The article you linked to fails to notice that the definition of the M1 aggregate changed during that time period. Prior to May 2020, SpMMDAs (Savings plus Money Market Deposit Accounts) were part of the M2 aggregate but not included in M1. Starting in May 2020, they are counted in M1. At the time of the change, SpMMDAs were about $11 trillion, so the definition alone accounts for most of the $15 trillion change the article is fulminating about.
Sorry if this has been said before, but actually recognizing that (a) inflation is real and (b) it's a bad thing DOES make her a genius among her peers.
Deep Thoughts there, sheesh. Two, in this case, constitutes a murder of morons.
I know you'd like to believe corporate greed is a primary cause of economic troubles. But, dude, it just isn't. Inflation is always always, always, a money problem. Talk with the MMT people about their fantasies and maybe you'll be able to put this specter of yours to test.
If Marxism doesn't explain it, Cook knows nothing about it.
"You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can."
That would be the case, dear Robert, if we didn't have competition to hold them in check.
As an exercise see if you can answer Jamie's question: "Why, for instance, was the gas at my local gas station ever $1.99…"
Murder of morons? More like a short bus of them.
The working class people I know know exactly what causes inflation, they know that shortages cause prices to rise and competition from millions of new workers depresses wages. It’s not about feelings, it’s the immutable law of supply and demand, the only alternative is rationing, which gives the power to the commissars, who are corruptible people too.
If you manage the supply of money and energy properly, and avoid monopolies, greedy capitalists will be constrained in their power to raise prices.

Sorry if this has been said before, but actually recognizing that (a) inflation is real and (b) it's a bad thing DOES make her a genius among her peers.
Now, if only she was intelligent enough to appreciate that high gas prices are one of the drivers of that inflation, and that pretty much every single Democrat Party policy has worked to make that inflation worse
"Robert Cook: "She's expressing the reality and feelings that working people experience.""
As if you'd know.
The adjective, 'brilliant' is a descriptor I'd never use to describe a Democrat.
Inflation is organized crime by the Central Banks designed to bankrupt the American middle class so their property can be foreclosed and bought up for 10 cents on the dollar. Ask Andrew Jackson.
Social Security is nearly funded pre-progressive prices. However, Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacares are only 20% funded, and, along with Green deals that are neither green, nor sustainable, nor environmentally friendly, and trillion dollar amnesty giveaway for an academic product received, are the principal drivers of progressive prices with single/central/monopolistic solutions or trickle-down economics.
I find it an immediate turn-off when anyone, but especially someone who is supposed to be a leader, uses vulgarity. It suggests to me a poorly educated person.
I think it suggests a toilet training mishap.
I have never had to toilet train anybody. I'm sure it would be a disaster of "you really need to shit in the fucking toilet" and "hey that's great you almost made it!" and also "oh God, don't cry, it's all good, you made a dookie." I am imagining this world of training the boy or girl to shit in the right place. And I have never been the trainer, but (I assume) at one point I was a trainee.
I was the first born so my training might have been sloppier than my brother, who is very precise. Anyway, my assumption is that every human being is a toilet training mishap. There is no perfection and we're all going to screw up.
Also, just for the record, I've got a B.A., a J.D., and a M.F.A., so I definitely have too many fucking degrees.
"Inflation's Bad!"
So stop printing up money you silly cow.
Joy Reid actually said that people didn't use the word "inflation" until Republicans popularized it in the Biden era.
Joy Reid, of course, is too young to remember the 1970s clearly, and too stupid to have ever gone back and learned about them.
Popular talk about inflation did indeed go away during the four decades of basically sane economic policy ushered in by Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately, that means we have plenty of middle-aged adults running around who have no memory of it, and idiotic economic policy was accordingly allowed to get free.
(Me, I'm younger than Reid, but I learned about the inflation of the 1970s from National Geographic. Not the articles, but the back-of-issue ads when I was going through a pile of old ones. A Toyota Corolla was $2,000 on the back of a 1972 issue, and $8,000 on the back of a 1978 issue.)
"Cutting to the chase - every reason for high fuel prices in that article is a Democrat-led policy.** Not, perhaps, what Cook wanted us to get out of the article."
Why do you presume that? I'm not an admirer of the Democrats,(a rare few excepted, including Congresswoman Porter). I certainly haven't voted for a Democrat for the presidency since 1992. (I have voted Green Party.) As far as I can see, both parties are largely corrupted by corporate money and both parties ignore the needs of the people for the wants of the wealthy entities who dominate politics in the US.
**(Not as I read it. The precipitating cause was the disruption of the COVID pandemic, followed up by the business decisions made by the oil producers, then and later. Yes, Biden said he wanted to move away from fossil fuels, which rattled the oil producers (though, as stated in the article, he continues to approve drilling). His shutting down the Keystone XL pipeline has made it more expensive to transport oil from Canada to the U.S. As the article states, "In short, the administration has been less friendly to oil production and transport than its predecessor, at a time when markets are undersupplied. How much that adds to the price you pay at the pump is impossible to say, but it’s a factor.". The oil producers are also at fault, by making decisions to reward themselves: "Even now, with prices soaring, energy companies are being cautious about ramping up their oil output. They’re slowly putting new rigs to work drilling more wells, which helps. But they’re also limiting how much they invest in new production so that they can reward their investors with bigger dividends and stock repurchases. That’s good for stockholders. But it means less money going toward pumping more oil, which isn’t great for consumers.")
As I said originally, the causes for this, as is typically true, are a confluence of events and decisions made regarding those events, and shaped by entities trying to benefit themselves to the extent they can and are able to, and the anticipated and unanticipated outcomes of those events and decisions.
You didn't mention price-gouging by wealthy corporations who raise their prices because...they can.
You’re comment was not true and this establishes forevermore that you are a fucking imbecile who only knows marxists slogans and talking points.

“Christ Robert, you're a smart guy, that is obvious. You are also consistent and I enjoy reading your comments (though I seldom agree). But this is just silly and poorly considered”.
Talk about assuming facts not in evidence. Vomiting Marxist talking points has nothing to do with intelligence.
Regarding my view of the Democrats betraying their voters, traditionally the poor and working class, and handing over our country to wealthy entities to use for their profit, this article posted at "Counterpunch" well articulates my thoughts better than I could. The author also well sums up today's Republicans.
Democrats will get their asses kicked and they deserve it, though the alternative is even darker
I do have a cavil with one comment the writer makes, referring to the January 06th "insurrection." I'm sure there were some people there who did think they were going to prevent the transition of the presidency from Trump to Biden, and, in that sense, they were hoping to enact an "insurrection." However, I think the majority were just excited Trumpers who wanted to join together with other Trumpers in Washington D.C. to protest, make themselves seen and heard, and to have a "fun" experience." I do not think most people there had any notion about actually carrying out an insurrection. But then, maybe I'm naive.)
Robert.
The Dems created the poor and have always betrayed the working class. Just as they have consistently betrayed people of color. Thank god there's enough information out there that a reasonable person can evaluate the facts and come to reasonable conclusions. Your mistake you have always made has been that people who are not you are dumber than you.
It's worth remembering on any Jon Stewart thread that he pushed back hard on the idea that China was completely innocent in the creation of COVID-19.
It's funny as shit.
Bill Maher mocks the shit out of the left all the time now. He's decided Woke people are a new weird religion and he hates them like poison.
Humor is vital. It's fucking vital. I beg the left to nominate a comedian for president in 2024. I'm not actually hoping for the Democrat party to be destroyed. I'd like you fuckers to reform!
If Jon Stewart, or Bill Maher, were to run for office in 2024, that would be huge, huge step up for Democrats.
SNL recently did a funny skit about the horror show that is Democrat candidates in 2024. Y'all seriously need to think outside the box and get some fucking new life into your party.
I can find all kinds of shit to say about Stewart, and even more about Maher. But at some level I would be very happy if they were the Democrat nominee, because they are outside the box, and their love of comedy makes them honest and interesting. And it would be a very funny primary season. Maher on the primary trail would be hysterical. And it might be a godsend because it might cause some Democrats to go religious in response. Anyway, shake the shit out of your party, because it's a fucking mess right now. No joke.
