I wonder: Rewrite that headline.

If you puzzle: A command is not a wondering, you see my problem — one of my problems — with the headline "Why hasn't Sam Bankman-Fried already been forced back to the US for FTX fiasco, critics wonder: 'Lock him up'/SBF's father, Joseph Bankman, notably helped Sen. Elizabeth Warren draft tax legislation." (Fox News).

1. Whether you're a "critic" or not, you can't "wonder" "Lock him up." You might wonder why he's not locked up. But you can't wonder an imperative.

2. I guess you could ignore the colon — which indicates that what the critics wonder is "Lock him up." Then you could see the critics as wondering why SBF hasn't been "forced back to the US." That is something that can be wondered. A question mark might help.

3. I find it hard to believe anyone is wondering that. There are no charges against SBF — not yet. I found that article because I was googling to see if SBF was actively fleeing from legal consequences. Isn't that what most of us would expect him to do — what we would do under the circumstances?

4. And that subheadline! What's the point of that if not to insinuate that SBF has political connections that are the reason he's not already extradited and locked up? It's such a weak insinuation. SBF's father is eminent enough to have some connection to drafting a tax bill, and — if you go to the link in the article — you'll see it was just about simplifying tax filing.

5. If you go on to read the article, you'll see it's not really about what "critics," plural, are saying. It's just about what Judge Jeanine Pirro said on Fox News, on "The Five." And Jesse Watters "agreed."

6. Here's something to wonder: Why is Fox News so trashy?

Bottom line on SFX, FTT, and SBF, and perhaps crypto-currencies: fools and their money are soon parted.

Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett told you all about it at their annual meeting with Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

Also, this is another indictment of the financial media. SBF? That guy is a joke. Just listen to him. He is full of BS from top to bottom. He wouldn't get past the first page of a due-diligence checklist. An interesting phenomenon is those who are willing to vouch for the most preposterous frauds.

People who are careless with their own money probably didn't earn it. They probably borrowed or stole it from others. Watch out!

I agree that Judge Jeanine expressed herself in a strong and emotional way but The Five is an opinion show...not Fox's hard news hour. It is a horrible, horrible thing for regular folks to lose life savings because some scamster knows how to work the system and their financial shenanigans seem protected by regulatory guard dogs until it is too late. I say this as someone who was deeply (and negatively) affected by the con of WorldCom many years ago. Ha, Judge Jeanine's high decibel language was soothing to me.

I lived in Zurich during the time that Marc Rich was hiding in plain sight in nearby Zug, Switzerland. The Swiss knew who he was (I didn’t) and wondered why I had no opinion. Of course Rich was famously pardoned later in by Bill Clinton. I think the Bank Man Fried will remain safe in what ever warm weather hideout he’s in. I do think he’ll be ratted out by locals.

Compare the news coverage on Enron if drawing pointillist grammatical conclusions?

The Elizabeth Warren connection is shocking.

Does the fact that SBF gave 40 million dollars to the Democrats who outspent Republicans by from 3-1 to 5 or 6 to ! in swing state U.S. Senate elections perhaps justify the wonderment of critics? Would that have been "trashy"?

Breezy said...

Re #4. I agree. You’d think they’d mention the bigger political connection - $40m to midterm campaigns, ~90% Dems. Second to Soros as an individual donor.

Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison is a math whiz who loves Harry Potter and taking big risks. She is also one of the supporting players in Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX catastrophe — and a new darling of the alt-right. -Forbes

Yes, let's look at this Ponzi scheme and money laundering operation that heavily benefited Democrats, though some money was given to Republicans who supported impeachment, and lay the blame on the "alt-right." We are being lied to non-stop by the "quality" magazines, but at least their grammar checks out!

I guess talking about this headline on SBF avoids talking about Forbes headline suggesting Alameda Research’s CEO, and member of SBF’s harem, is a right-wing darling.

Fox news is a trash network because it's owner is part of the corrupt globalist movement.

It has 2 individuals that I know of who produce good content that they are forced to keep around.

They would fire Tucker if they could.

"to see if SBF was actively fleeing from legal consequences."

And how, Ms. Althouse, do you know that he hasn't already fled?

SBF is ONLY giving the media interviews via text. And that assumes it is him on the other end of the texts.

He's gone, like a fart in the wind. Just like all those ballots.

The vast majority of Republican and Democrat voters do not want what their party is pushing and Fox News is really not viewed by many people. It is just viewed by more people than CNN/MSNBC.

Fox News is only different in than it has different people to lie to.

But many of average Rep/Dem voters are still tied up in the tribalist fight though.

This is what we have to break through.

The 2024 primary is going to be about evicting the corrupt CoC element of the Republican party and absorbing disaffected Democrats.

This is the only path to victory for the Republican party. We will not win if we are still playing cult tribalist games on CoC strings. We must make the Republican Party a working class party that attracts disaffected democrats. That means getting rid of planks in the platform and emphasizing others.

I see a lot of maps of money flow and allegations of FTX money laundering.

Some go congress>Ukraine>FTX >politicians

But almost all stop too soon. Almost none ask what the polls did with the money.

They mostly spent it buying ads in media. The money went to ABC, CBS, NYT, fox, WaPo etc.

Does anyone really think they are going to bite the hand that feeds them? (see also pharma companies)

I suspect that a lot also went from FTX, Ukraine, pols, to individual journalists for puff pieces, native ads and other stuff.

H/T John C Dvorak for pointing this out.

Yeah drop the lock him up from the rhetoric. I'm not gonna defend any media organization.

Real question is, will he BDS ever get locked up? That's to be seen.

Elizabeth Warren's hands are dirty with this thing. That part's fair.

I can't imagine this guy and his girlfriend ingenious-d FTX on their own. Come on.

And then, Arnold Horshack show up in Washinton and says "Hey. Check out all this money I'm gonna give you guys!! It's ALTRUISM, man. Let's party..."

I often wonder whether to use a hyphen or a dash or just a comma. Here a dash might have been better, or a rewrite of the whole headline. The meaning got through, though.

Fox News did cover stories that the legacy media refused to report, and it was good to have another window on events. I don't know if that's still true, but The New York Times and the Washington Post present such a one-sided view of things that one needed Fox News or the New York Post or even the Daily Mail to give one a more complete picture of the world.

I’m too lazy to do your googling for you this morning, but if you take seven seconds you’ll find: 1. The use of a colon to separate a title from its subtitle is distinct from the colon’s other grammatical purposes, and 2. The question mark may be omitted in rhetorical questions.

what about the word "Fiasco"? This is criminal fraud. Millions or even Billions have been stolen. This makes is seem like Fried Bankster and his gang were just a bunch goofy HS students who got put in charge of the Prom and it was a "fiasco".

Fox News might as well used "Hi-jinks" or "Shennangians". As in Fried Bankster committed some financial Hi-jinks and lost millions.

Althouse if focused in on a trashy headline. I'm more annoyed at the minimizing of a crime, which by the way, is what conservative inc. always do. See "Red state" or "Hot air" in particular. They're always treating every left/liberal/Democrat bad action as some sort of whimsical joke. "Guess Schumer shot himself on this one. Har har" or ""This won't end well". Or "the border sure is a clown show".

Maybe the biggest financial crime of the decade. $Billions$ just went Poof! The Bankruptcy Court appointed windup CEO was in disbelief when he started digging into the mess. He apparently worked on the Enron windup, and that was a picnic in comparison. They have no idea where a lot of the money is, or went. Or the crypto currency either. One of the advantages of crypto currencies is that it is easy to hide. It’s very true here. Corporate decisions were apparently made through text messaging, with an app that automatically deletes text, and thus, the audit trail, after a short time period. There was no central repository of checking accounts, or those with signature authority. Apparently good parts of the organization were never professionally audited, nor could they have been. Best description I have heard is that it engaged in industrial level Ponzi schemes, protected by hundreds of millions of dollars given to powerful politicians, Dems like Warren, in particular.
