Highly recommend George R.R. Martin's Not A Blog. I've never watched Game of Thrones to or House of the Dragon but his non-blog is very entertaining.

Also loving Dark Winds, with a season 2 promised.

Washington Post: "Russia’s annexation puts world ‘two or three steps away’ from nuclear war"

The big question is, would a nuclear exchange between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin keep Trump from running again?

Never be afraid to look at the bright side.

If the nukes come, all we have to do is Duck and Cover. We are covered.

However, if Trump comes, no one will survive. Ask president Obama

New UK PM ‘Liz Truss hasn’t understood a word I wrote’, says PM’s favourite author. Actually, it's her supposed favorite historian, and it's Rick Perlstein. I haven't read Perlstein's four thick volumes on the history of American conservatism and the Republican Party from Goldwater to Reagan, but I have read enough of the reviews and enough of Perlstein's own articles to wonder whether Liz really did read the books, and if she read them and admires them to wonder whether she's really fit to be head of a major country and its Conservative Party.

But then I reflect that maybe authors aren't the only or the best judges of how their works should be interpreted. It might seem like, yes, if you admire a historian, you admire their collection of evidence, the reading they give, to it and the interpretation they make from it, but you can still admire a historian's style without agreeing with his conclusions. You can admire how he sets the scene and depicts his characters, and yet turn every evaluative plus into a minus and every minus into a plus. You can read a book supposedly about the decline of a nation as a primer on how to revive one and vice versa. Time will tell.

Ghosts is a clever, cute and funny British sitcom (it's not the one about the ghost, vampire, and werewolf who set up housekeeping together). If you still can stand sitcoms you might enjoy it. Fortunately, for all their faults, the Brits do usually know enough not to let these things go on too long.

Remember when chili had suet, jalapeƱos were hot, yogurt was sour, and feta was pungent? But there's always green chile (in every thing) in Santa Fe.

Putin heads a kleptocracy. Corruption is endemic and providing bad news to one's boss is likely to be prejudicial to one's health. Telling Putin that's there's a problem with the pipeline is likely to be buried by the workers and their bosses and the equipment and tools needed to maintain those pipelines was probably diverted to a kleptocrat's dacha.

So, yes, it's more likely stupidity that killed Cock Robin (Nordstreams 1 & 2) then malice.

Pelosi says farmers need illegal immigrants ‘to pick the crops’ in Florida

"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday said that farmers in Florida need illegal immigrants "to pick the crops" as she called for "comprehensive immigration reform" and said there was a shortage of workers in the U.S.

Pelosi was asked about whether the southern border is secure, and responded by saying that while "we have a responsibility to secure our border, we also have a responsibility to recognize the importance of newcomers to our nation."

"Right now, the best thing that we can do for our economy is comprehensive immigration reform," she said. Democratic proposals for such reform typically include sweeping amnesties for illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

Pelosi then pressed her economic argument and made reference to recent moves by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Republican governors to move illegal immigrants north to places like Martha’s Vineyard, New York City and Washington, D.C.

"We have a shortage of workers in our country, and you see even in Florida, some of the farmers and the growers saying, 'Why are you shipping these immigrants up North? We need them to pick the crops down here,'" she said.

Pelosi’s remarks come as the U.S. remains in the throes of a historic border crisis which has seen more than 2.1 million migrant encounters this fiscal year, and more than 200,000 migrant encounters in August alone. It is the ongoing nature of the crisis that has led Republican governors to bus and fly migrants further north. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has bussed more than 10,000 migrants to Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago, while DeSantis sparked outrage from Democrats when his office flew about 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard.

The liberal bias reeks in this story from the very first sentence. Isn't the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel supposed to be a straight news daily?

There is also US version, on CBS. The second season just started on Thursday night. I like both it and the UK version.

I'm reading a more reasonable explanation about what happens when all that natural gas is held static in the pipeline over several months. I'm not versed enough to explain it here, but it can result in explosions within the pipeline.

Given the time between explosions it's a much better explanation than deliberate sabotage. I'll see if I can locate the article again to link here

Some good news: I got power back yesterday. My internet is still out, so I’m stuck with phone bandwidth. I am very fortunate compared to many folks in the area who were closer to the coast. It is what what it is. We will come back from this, but it will take a long time.

Up early for an old man tri at Walden Pond this morning. Also my first swim of the fall season in a wetsuit. We'll swim the mile going across and back the length of the pond. Then bike along the easternmost trails, cross the commuter rail tracks and explore all the horse trails over to the Sudbury River and back. The finish with be a two mile hike around Walden with a slight side trip to Henry David Thoreau's cabin site where we will get in our knees and pray to Gaia for forgiveness.

Swam a half mile yesterday in the home pond in just a Speedo. 65F is colder than it used to be. Got back to shore to see a fisherman struggling to liberate his rig from a deep snag. Swam the line out beyond and freed the hook. He cast it back to the same spot and got snagged again. Sometimes the fishing Gods will not be denied. Besides, the fish weren't biting. Probably the waters still to warm. The thermocline is inverted this time of year. While the body was freezing at the he surface, the hands were stroking down into what felt like bath water.

And so it goes.

I am not familiar with large scale natural gas transmission so I can't speak to to that subject. However I do produce my own natural gas on a small scale. Static natural gas poses no problem. The only problem I've experienced is unwanted water vapor freezing during transmission. It freezes in a perfect conical shape. Explosions? Nope.

All President Trump wanted to do was Make America Great Again.

Leave it to the Democrats to have a problem with that.

WHY do progressives love to get lied to?? WHO watches this crapfest with all their lies and propaganda. No wonder why America is going down the toilet. We all know that Democrat cities are suffering BECAUSE of Democrat policies, that the left always tries to blame the right for....

Lovely pastel morning pix!

Like Lurker21 I haven't read Pearlstein and I'm not familiar with Truss's intellectual influences, but in addition to the personal factors, there is the Insider/Outsider dimension, two in fact: the Historian vs the Practitioner and the American vs the Brit.

In my experience most people tend to map their own country's politics to others; whether it is the case here, or matters, remains to be seen. Truss could just be a pretentious wankette.
