I feel like this is one of the best reality+political moves I've seen in a very long time from anyone in an executive branch of government.
I don't often want to volunteer to pay for a government program, but that's how much I support this - I would donate funds to this. For me, a few principles:
1. At the individual level, these are people and families. If we are foolish enough to have open borders, then I want to see them get food, shelter, safety, and assimilation - for those we both allow in and don't have the wherewithal to immediately deport.
2. The burden of that should be spread across the states and cities so that it is a reality for all citizens they can equally see and feel.
3. Anywhere in the U.S. whose elected government declared their state or city a Sanctuary city for such immigrants should directly and immediately receive the bulk of those coming across the borders in an uncontrolled fashion. That's what sanctuary means.

You are exactly right. And it's not just politics or sarcasm. Frankly, many people who believe in these policies have been doing this for years. This is why you see large settlements of refugees in the middle east in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Or the Basque in Idaho. I could go on.

At this point in the story, I thought this was going to be a story of some racist bartender calling the police on the pretext that this was a fake ID or something.
Nope, his concern - borne out, as his friends all got their IDs back, but the bartender scratched his head and told him, "I don't even remember you coming in" - was that the bartender was going to sell his ID. Somehow this had never occurred to me. He never saw that ID again.

But until they are changed, the Government is obligated to enforce them. Until you decide to enforce them, don't relax in the dream that only the folks in the fly-over States will have to deal with the consequences.
