I've curated 8 TikToks for your pleasure tonight. Let me know which one (or ones) you like best.

1. That fish!

2. The dog's delicate care for a plant.

3. Sounds you don't hear anymore.

4. Do you pronounce these words correctly?

5. A designer food experience.

6. How to dress for a work meeting.

7. Her not understanding any critically acclaimed film.

8. The jazz they play in stores in Tokyo. (And here's his "In-Store (Tokyo Jazz)" playlist.)

Dog caring for the plant. A distant second - sounds from childhood.

Humble suggestion, embed these rather thank link to them...

With links, you have click through and then click the volume button so you can hear anything.

With embed, you just click through and it plays automatically.

Dressing for work was impressive, and not a bad result, depending on where she works. Tokyo jazz was also good. Others, not so much.

Sounds. And word pronunciation. Yikes!

Sorry, I failed to get the joke on #4. Why did he start mispronouncing the words? Is there a hidden joke of some sort?

Leon said...

I like the pronunciation one. After the second or third one I got the joke can I actually got the pronunciations "right"
For the record I got the pronunciations right before the joke started. I have an excellent vocabulary but I don't think those were that hard of words.

I like Green Juice girl on critically acclaimed films. She is still working her metal straw. I also like the Japanese Jazz guy. I read several Murakami books and short stories this year, and it was nice to hear the Japanese Jazz culture validated. The mispronounced word guy had me going for a second. I like how he lured me in by referring to probably not having heard certain words but read them. It took advantage of my need to think of myself as well read. Hook, line, and sinker. Mispronouncing words that I had only read happened to me quite a bit when I was younger but not so much anymore. But, something that still does happen occasionally is that I will speak a word for the first time ever. It happened this week but I can't remember the word right now. It just rolled right off my tongue, whatever it was. I am delighted when this happens. It's like unexpectedly spotting a rare bird.

Disappointing! Only three out of twelve in pronunciation.

I am a dog, so I have to pick #2. The pronunciation guy was good-- "pube scent" made me laugh.

Right off on #4 there was bad grammar. Then the mispronounciations - is he hoping to get them into the culture? Then the dress for a work meeting - that was sort of the same thing. Then the Gucci food - a travesty of good food. Sort of the same. Japan jazz was at least someone enjoying themselves though in a strange way. If you go to those sites today, I wonder what the AI is going to say you want to see tomorrow.

Jazz in Japan... YES! They take their jazz very seriously (and vinyl LPs in general). They revere Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. None of that Kenny G shit.

#3. Sounds.

What business is the green hair woman in?

How come American stores don’t play jazz?

#4 I only got three correct. What a cat-a-strophe.

I really liked the funny tictoc. The others were adequate.

"Curated" might be my "garnered."

I'm sorry, I truly have no life in my 8th decade yet, I can always find something more positive than trolling thru TikTok. Well, maybe after swimming in the polluted sewer of the Acela corridor media? Retirement isn't being kind to our hostess!

Sounds you don't hear anymore was by far above the rest.

The one about pronunciation was really a how to mispronounce those words. The clue was when he pointed to seeing as hearing and hearing as seeing.

Do fish make an accidental play appearance like dolphins have an accidental smile appearance?

I loved the Gucci Cafe visit and the Strange Fashionista -- those two were both excellent. The Victim of Cinema was good too: funny and painful in about equal measure.

Almost all the rest were pleasant enough. The Word guy, though, should try that act in front of a live audience. He's not the performer he thinks he is.

A charmingly absurd collection. And nobody yelled at me!
Enjoyed the fish, the dog, the words, the food (especially guy eating caviar and the bill total), dressing for work.
I may actually have had enough by now of the green juice girl whom I previously loved.
Jazz in Japan was an insight into a real human being.

I'd love to hear that jazz music in public places here. Especially at gas pumps where they blare horrible musical ads at the customer.

Mans laughter is an oooooold prosecutor's joke.

Read his book "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" for his account of his life running a jazz bar before he became a novelist.

I like the Japanese jazz guy. Great unexpected accent as well. I like people who are passionate about true quality, unlike the Gucci person. I would like to meet him.

I actually have that book but haven't read it yet. I bought Men Without Women and read Drive My Car in preparation for seeing the movie. The movie had not yet been released and then I bought Norwegian Wood while I was waiting to see the movie. I loved the movie and while watching it, it struck me that the changes to the story seemed very Murakamiish and this was verified when I read the rest of the stories in Men Without Women and found the other elements of the movie's plot. I then read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I ordered What I think About and First Person Singular after that and read half the stories in First Person then put it down and wandered off for some reason. Right now, I am listened to How To Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan. When I finish it, I will read What I Think About. Your suggestion qualifies as a nudge from the universe to get on it.

Only one I took serious was #4 and soon realized the joke was on us as he rearranged the pronunciations.

I recently heard two criticisms of TikTok: 1. That it encourages young people in the US to spend too much time and energy on essentially inconsequential activities; 2. Somehow (I don't understand this criticism) that the Chinese government uses TikTok to "collect information" about viewers in the US. Do commenters have any reaction to these criticisms?

The fish. Also appreciate someone going to Gucci so I don't have to. And the Tokyo retail scene fascinating. Plus dressing for work meeting. Thinking that's the way to dress for clerkship interview at US Supreme court. No one who dresses like that could be suspected of leaking. I don't get the dog.

Cool. I hope you enjoy it.

"The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" was really great. So is "Norwegian Wood." Perhaps my favorite of the ones I've read is "Kafka on the Shore." I read it, then reread it right away.
