John Fetterman, PA leftie Dem candidate for US senate, had stroke earlier this year. Rather than be on the campaign trail, he has been resting comfortably in his basement.
"Mr. Fetterman, 52, said he has “no physical limits,” walks 4 to 5 miles every day in 90-degree heat, understands words properly and hasn’t lost any of his memory. He struggles with hearing sometimes, he said, and may “miss a word” or “slur two together,” but he said it doesn’t happen often ...." (via Townhall.com)
That ought to have been the first question to ask myself. When I looked at Trump, I saw a bigoted blowhard making one ignorant argument after another. What Trump’s supporters saw was a candidate whose entire being was a proudly raised middle finger at a self-satisfied elite that had produced a failing status quo.
I was blind to this. Though I had spent the years of Barack Obama’s presidency denouncing his policies, my objections were more abstract than personal. I belonged to a social class that my friend Peggy Noonan called “the protected.” My family lived in a safe and pleasant neighborhood. Our kids went to an excellent public school. I was well paid, fully insured, insulated against life’s harsh edges.
Trump’s appeal, according to Noonan, was largely to people she called “the unprotected.” Their neighborhoods weren’t so safe and pleasant. Their schools weren’t so excellent. Their livelihoods weren’t so secure. Their experience of America was often one of cultural and economic decline, sometimes felt in the most personal of ways...'

John Smithson California 2h ago Some people can't see past Donald Trump's weaknesses to see his strengths. He had strong weaknesses, to be sure. But he also accomplished more than any president I know of.
Management expert Peter Drucker had this to say on that subject: "The idea that there are 'well-rounded' people, people who have only strengths and no weaknesses . . . is a prescription for mediocrity if not for incompetence. Strong people always have strong weaknesses too. Where there are peaks, there are valleys."
When you judge people by their character, you too often get mediocrity or incompetence, like we have seen with George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and especially Joe Biden. When you judge people by what they have accomplished, despite their failures, you get people like Donald Trump.
Some people think that Donald Trump accomplished little if anything and that the problems we face under Joe Biden are beyond his control. That's certainly possible. I think that is poppycock.

I would have said personality rather than character. Think judging based on the crease in their pants. The guy who makes a fetish of 'working with the other side' is probably the guy who doesn't have strong principles. Making a good speech doesn't mean the ability to lead an organization as an executive. Being the folksy grandpa probably just means you're senile and nobody listens to you.

The commenter left out the most obvious example -- Jimmy Carter, "a good man" many people would say, who promised he would never lie to us. Bush Jr. was able to convince his supporters that he was a humble, pious, and godly man. They were voting for him based on an idea of his character.
Biden explicitly ran on his empathy, compassion, decency and competence. None of that was true, and we're seeing the effects now, but people believed at the time that he was an ordinary decent guy. Obama ran more on a charisma that was largely invented, but had some real basis. The idea that Obama was elected based on a cultivated image, though, rather than on proven experience puts Obama in the same category as Carter, Bush, and Biden. I don't think he was as disastrous as the others, but "mediocre" may be applicable to him.
Senators don't make very good presidents. They are used to posing. They don't usually have administrative experience, and make up for it by presenting a attractive image for voters. Based on Carter and the second Bush, we might also say that one-term governors don't make great presidents. I believe we were told at the time that governors of Georgia and Texas didn't have much power to do things. If that's true, it supports the argument.
"It doesn’t matter where President Joe Biden contracted COVID-19, according to the White House. I don’t think that matters. Right? Curious George- my thoughts exactly when I read that. It depends on what the writer meant by character.
If he meant character as a superficial public veneer of affability, maybe.
If he meant character as keeping your word and doing your job as best as you can, not so much.
