You gotta love duck families. I know I do. Once I pulled up to a 5-point stop and a mama duck was crossing the street with five ducklings. All five lanes of traffic stopped to watch the splendid moment. Then disaster struck: the mother and the first four ducklings jumped the high curb off the street and onto the sidewalk but the last duckling failed to make the leap.

At that moment at least five car doors flung open (mine being one) to play the role of Superman (or God, take your pick) to save that last little duckling. Not to worry: he tried again and made the leap.

I treasure this memory, not only of the cuteness of the ducks but of the humanity exhibited by us five (or more) drivers.

A big Blue Heron was in the reeds and partially camouflaged the other day. As momma duck paddled by with her brood Blue Heron would wait till the last one went by and would then snag the last in line little mallard and swallow it in one big gulp. You could see it fighting as it made it's way down to the Blue Heron's gullet. It was traumatizing to several of the women sitting around the park feeding the the other dicks and ducklings. I said "Hey no shortage of mallards anywhere. Big shortage of protected Blue Herons. Let the big guy feed." The women were not amused.

I run a machine shop in Eastern Waukesha County (New Berlin, WI). Machinists and operators that work here live in Milwaukee. And they don’t live on woke Upper East Side or Shorewood. They deal with Milwaukee’s westward expanding deterioration every day. They are the one’s holding down a job. Doing it right. And they are the ones who have to deal with the in increased violence, car thefts, and drugs. It was the same when I ran factories in Chicagoland. These people don’t want the police defunded. But they are also loyal to their neighborhoods and communities.

Last summer my 22-year-old stubborn daughter took a place at 11th and Beecher, west of HWY 94 by St. Josephat’s Basilica. About ½ mile from 16th and National where last week’s 10:30am grocery store robbery and murder took place.

If you’re on the east side of the HWY 94, you’re in Bayview. It’s ok safe, but the lakefront there isn’t safe anymore. If you’re on the west side of the HWY, you’re in the hood. Gunshots every day. I offered to subsidize her rent and told her to move to the Lower East Side by Brady Street last year before she stubbornly moved in. If I was 22, I’d want to live by Brady Street and party with all the UWM kids.

This year she takes me up on my offer, having realized I was right about how dangerous the neighborhood is and we find her an apt on the Lower East Side, two blocks south of Brady Street. I cosign the lease. We are moving her August 1st. Good? You’d think.

But on June 20th a guy gets killed outside of Casablanca just after closing (a well know Mediterranean Restaurant on Brady)…on the Lower East Side. That’s 2022 Milwaukee

Oh. And guess where the slumlord lives who owns the shit-house in the hood where my daughter chose to rent?? He’s a white guy from Madison, WI and invests in cheap rental housing in Milwaukee’s hood. Place is falling apart and insulated with fly paper. Wealthy New Yorkers do in the Riverwest neighborhood on the North Side, east of the Milwaukee River.

Jump around!!!

Spending each summer on the lake with a pier, I get to watch a couple of duck families grow up. I especially love watching their behavior toward me change over the summer. I wish they could talk. I'd like to explain to them why I don't feed them (I feel kinda guilty).

Gusty- There is no safe neighborhood anymore. We are in a very wealthy suburb of Philly. The danger is in going to the supermarket, getting gas or almost any public social interaction. Five miles from us is the county seat, which is very urban in nature. Many of the shopping centers and gas stations serve both communities and the interactions are getting increasingly dangerous, as is driving. It's not robbery. It's just random violence aimed at anyone who looks successful - especially woman vs. woman. A societal course correction is needed but I am unclear what it will look like.

Have been mulling over a Facebook post by one of my friends from childhood. She took a photo of an acorn and said, “Oh, look. I saved an oak tree from the bottom of the lake.” Her point being that the acorn is no more a tree than a fetus is a person. I didn’t comment because she is one of those people who always has to be right. Also, it seems from her posts that she always expects to be adored and justified in comments. It is really strange how many of her “friends” post comments telling her how wonderful she is. But anyways, here is what I want to say: 1) Yes, that is an oak tree at the beginning of its life. Its DNA is the same as any oak tree throughout its life. 2) An embryo is a human at the beginning of its life. It is a unique human being. 3) By the time most elective abortions occur, that human being is no longer an embryo, but a recognizably human fetus. You don’t even need the DNA test to tell it is human. 3)We don’t treat trees the same way we treat humans 4) Your post is a complete fail as a defense of abortion.

A conservative landlord renting crappy places to students? Pshaw! Who could believe such a thing? (I mean really, guys.)

As far as safety . . . fuhgeddaboudit. My wife had to go to her gynecologist today, whose office is in Collierville, the prestige eastern suburb now that Germantown between Memphis and Collierville is not so cool anymore. (Moving east is the oldest tradition in Memphis.)

I told her I wasn't sure how much gas was in the car, which caused her to remind me that she didn't pump gas anymore--purse-snatchings, assaults, and more are commonplace at gas stations along the Poplar Avenue corridor, which is the main drag of the metro area and the spine near which the wealthier neighborhoods tend to cluster.

She got home with about 15 miles left. I have to tank up first thing tomorrow--using my Kroger fuel points for June, and staying alert to my surroundings.

I don't rule out deliberate Covid release by the CCP (for reasons already given by others) but I think if they had -planned- a release their own reaction would have been different. Or they might not have had a panicked-looking reaction at all--and we wouldn't know the difference.

IIR the timeline, participants in the World Military Games were getting sick before the Wuhan leak/release, which suggests a plan to release in a controlled way followed by human error and coverup at Wuhan.

Of course, either way the CCP is a massive criminal organization already and all members deserve extermination.

"When parents steer their sons away from the tender ministrations of Commander in Chief Biden, who destroyed military credibility, and his own presidency, in Kabul last year."

Our military's credibility has been besmirched and finally extinguished due to a half-century of failed but murderous wars of empire--wars founded on lies and intended to expand our global reach and domination and our access to or control over precious resources in other lands, none of spent to actually defend America or "guarantee" our freedom. Our freedom can only be lost--or defended--here at home. We have squandered (and continue to squander) the people's treasure on wasteful, criminal war-making abroad, (and funneling funds to our clients in other areas of the world), rather than spend that treasure for the benefit, health, safety, and well-being of the people here at home.

That's what makes them conservative because everything govt does affects them.

You know Inga. I'm sure there are Waukesha County people who slumlord in Milwaukee. I don't believe you know one, but I will concede that you are correct in that assumption. I like to bitch and moan about Dane County. They piss me off. I'm not alone. But my story is real.

And I will concede this. The slumlords that own rental properties in poor neighborhoods, that once used to be beautiful, pick up the old house for $50k or less. Get $500 to $800 a month for rent, and often don't include gas/electric, and don't put shit back into the property. They take the money and run. And it just keeps dilapidating. So, fuck them. I'm sure they cross all political and racial demographics...and even county lines. And Milwaukee doesn't MAKE THEM put money back in. I'd support that.

But it would be labeled as gentrification by...liberals.

I don't know what you are all about. I'm a 53 year old dad with a 22-year-old daughter that is working but not going to school. Fuck UW. I don't care. She's poor right now, but she ain't gonna be $100K in debt at 24. She is independent, tenacious, angry, stubborn, hard-working....all I want to do is subsidize her rent in a safe place. Typical Dad stuff for twenty-something daughters. Rent, gas, brakes, health insurance...I'll help her with school when she wants to go. But she's Generation Z. They're nuts. It's Generations X's fault.

I'm willing to pay for my Generation's sins. We made parenthood a competition. And we let them dose our boys with speed rather that run them around the block. We let them put our daughters on anti-depressants. And Generation X NEVER questioned the autism spike. Fuck us too.

I dare Milwaukee to get all the illegal guns off the streets. 2nd amendment supporters are in favor of confiscating and prosecuting illegal gun ownership. I think if you go after the hard drugs, and the gangs...you end up finding a lot of illegal guns. But yes, easier said than done.

Jesus...Milwaukee???? Whatever happened to drinking beer and smoking some pot? That was Brady Street on the Lower East Side...once upon a time.

The Meaning of Hitler wasn't very good. Not the meaning of Hitler and not the movie of that title. Right from the start the filmmakers wonder if the world really needs another film about Hitler, or whether it merely adds to the fascination with him. They make the movie anyway, with an annoying clapperboard clap at the beginning of every new scene.

About three minutes in, Martin Amis, son of the novelist, says “We might as well get on to his similarities with Trump.” Later the filmmakers and a prominent historian wonder if they should give any time to Hitler apologist and Holocaust denier David Irving. Wouldn't that just encourage Hitler worship and Holocaust denial? They give Irving a lot of camera time anyway. Then there's the clips of Trump they stick in later on.

The moviemakers do talk to a lot of historians with interesting perceptions and interpretations of Hitler, but they don't add up to anything coherent or memorable. Most people's take away from the movie would just be Trump = Hitler.

Even if the kangaroo court had already called on that person to testify, there's nothing remotely illegal about Trump reminding the witness that he was bound by "executive privilege", that only Trump could waive it. I'm sure his lawyers would have preferred that they do it, but it's still not "tampering".

So...what's yer point?

And where does that "once again" come from? Last time I checked, Trump hadn't been indicted, let alone convicted, for tampering with any witness.

As ever, your game is weak. Very weak.

I don't know if it counts as a "war of empire", but Trump's crushing of ISIS was in no way a failure, and cost few if any American lives, and not very many lives of our allies, who provided most of the troops, while the U.S. provided most of the arms, communications, coordination, technology, and air support.

When Trump was inaugurated, ISIS (under whatever name) ruled half of Syria and a third of Iraq, and openly sold women (at least one of them an American) as sex-slaves, in their capital of Raqqa. By the time Trump left office, the few ISIS members still at large were hiding out in caves along the Syria-Turkey border, afraid to stick their heads out for fear of being instantly and fatally bombed, missiled, or droned. It was a huge success, and most Americans know nothing about it, because the press and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) weren't interested in covering it. A president Trump would have no difficulty recruiting soldiers and sailors for that kind of service.

Jon Stewart nails it.

So fucking brilliant.

And the dishonesty of Stephen Colbert, and all the other liberals, who want to help the Chinese government cover up their shit, that is despicable.

This dishonesty -- and the liberal urge to own and control the airwaves in order to protect the narrative -- is awful. It naturally causes conspiracy theories to flourish among the people who are being censored.

I get why some Republicans -- who naturally hate dictatorships and the homicidal thugs who run them -- believe this was an intentional attack on the world by the murderers in China.

That seems to me highly unlikely, given that the virus was released in Wuhan, and it's killed a lot of people in China, and the government has closed down a massive number of its own cities in response.

That cannot have been the original plan.

If they wanted to attack the United States, you would release the virus in the U.S., in New York or D.C. Terrorists who are trying to attack us, attack us.

Why start in Wuhan? That's the basic question you have to answer before this conspiracy theory has any legs. At least with me.

(Accidental lab leak isn't a conspiracy theory, in my opinion, but a cogent and kind of obvious explanation for what the fuck happened).

Saint Croix said...

Colbert tries to shut down Jon Stewart(!) by calling him "Ron Johnson."

That's the sort of ideological stupidity that drives me up the wall.

Here's the thought process...

1. Donald Trump has sex with his wife.

2. Jon Stewart has sex with his wife.

3. And Colbert yells at him and says, "You can't have sex with your wife! That's what Donald Trump does!"

Drago said...

Saint Croix: "Why start in Wuhan? That's the basic question you have to answer before this conspiracy theory has any legs. At least with me."

You are assuming far too much.

Perhaps an intended intentional release of the ChiCom Flu (development of said virus funded by Mr Science himself, Li'l Tony Fauci) was improperly executed and was accidentally started in Wuhan, as opposed to simply an unintentional leak from the Wuhan lab.

Ww will never have answers to these questions.

So much hate for “slumlords.” Any wonder why they are that way? It’s the only way you don’t lose your shirt. A certain percentage of tenants are destructive and deadbeats who will not pay. My mother rented out the house I grew up in starting about 10 years after the neighborhood went to shit. That lasted two years IIRC. First year tenant was okay but moved for some reason. Second tenant stopped paying rent after a few months. Took six months to evict by which time the tenant had destroyed the bathroom, much of the wood floors and had some how f’ed up the furnace. Many thousands in damage. Multiples of what she had collected in rent the entirety of renting the property for two years. My parents bought the house in ‘72 for $14k and she sold it about 30 years later for $20k. Guess who bought? A “slumlord” - that is a person who is willing to deal with deadbeats and willing to rent out a barely occupiable house.

Mom couldn’t recover anything from the tenant. You can’t get blood from a stone.

Of course Commies are bad, and the Chinese version is among the worst bad. I'm not arguing against that deliberate-release scenario because I don't think them morally capable, but because the reaction that I saw (am allowed to see given our filter-filled world) looked like they were as surprised and freaked as anyone IN THAT INSTANCE. And they continue to act spooked.

Mao may have unleashed the Cultural Revolution and Red Guard, but the 21st Century Red Chinese leadership want stable power, control, and money, not mass chaos. Not in China, anyway.

I've offered my own outline of events, which assumes CCP bad faith and intent just as much as the others do. I confess that I find Sun Tzu interesting but hard to interpret or transpose across the time and distance culturally. I'm much more a Machiavelli and Clausewitz guy myself.
