"The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue."

Said David Axelrod, with a distinctively clever way to state the numerical fact, quoted in "Should Biden Run in 2024? Democratic Whispers of ‘No’ Start to Rise. In interviews, dozens of frustrated Democratic officials, members of Congress and voters expressed doubts about the president’s ability to rescue his reeling party and take the fight to Republicans" (NYT).

Another quote from Axelrod: "Biden doesn’t get the credit he deserves for steering the country through the worst of the pandemic, passing historic legislation, pulling the NATO alliance together against Russian aggression and restoring decency and decorum to the White House. And part of the reason he doesn’t is performative. He looks his age and isn’t as agile in front of a camera as he once was, and this has fed a narrative about competence that isn’t rooted in reality."

I should make a tag for "performative." It's a buzz word these days, I believe, and I'd like to keep track of it.

Did it come from gender studies? The most notable appearance of "performative" in my archive was a quote from the famous hoax "The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct": "The penis vis-à-vis maleness is an incoherent construct. We argue that the conceptual penis is better understood not as an anatomical organ but as a gender-performative, highly fluid social construct."

And from the field of racial studies, there's this, quoted from a NYT op-ed about Rachel Dolezal (the white woman who identified as black): "But Ms. Dolezal’s view of herself — however confused, or incongruent with society’s — reveals an essential truth about race: It is a fiction, a social construct based in culture and not biology. It must be 'made' from what people believe and do. Race is performative."

And I quoted this, about an "anti-racism" mural in Madison: "[The artist] said her intent is to show the nature of performative allyship and the manner in which white savior complex permeates Madison."

We talked about the word a few days ago, in connection with a Georgetown professor who'd tweeted that the defenders of Brett Kavanaugh "deserve miserable deaths." She called her tweeting "performative."

I got some push back in the comments saying that the word "performative" should be restricted to the "How To Do Things With Words" philosophical meaning — speech that performs an act. Indeed, that is the only meaning of the word in the OED

But the vogue usage of "performative" that I'm seeing in the media these days isn't that. "How To Do Things With Words" was required reading in my first semester of college. That was 1969. These days,  more than half a century later, young people are picking up different ways of thinking and talking in college, and performativeness is something different.

If people these days are finding the word "performative" useful, it suggests that they also believe in a more authentic and substantive aspect of life that is deeper and more important than the things we do for show — the theater of politics and society. I hope so!

But it is also possible that people are coming to feel that there is nothing inside, that it's all performative, that everything is fluid. That's not a new idea, that we are empty and soulless — that Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player/That struts and frets his hour upon the stage/And then is heard no more.

I'll bet any takers dollars to donuts that the Democratic Party will solve the Biden Dementia problem by backing a primary challenge to Biden, just like Sen. Ted Kennedy almost won the presidential primaries against the sitting Dem. President, Jimmy Carter.

The wonderful thing about a successful primary challenge --- it gets rid of VP Harris, too! A yuuuuuge win-win for the Dems.

It's not Biden's fault. It is the fault of the people who run him. Does anyone really think he is in charge? Even he complains about it in his more sentient moments. A far left climate crazy group of Democrats got him installed and then wrote those fatal Executive Orders he signed on inauguration day. The rest was automatic. There is no way that this country can end the use of "fossil fuels" or petrochemicals. The only remaining question is whether this is intentional to destroy this country in some deluded quest for Utopia or unintended consequences for people who are too stupid to realize what they are doing.

The pandemic was sustained through planned parent/hood in several democrat districts (e.g. Whitmer/Michigan, Cuomo/New York), population-wide distribution of non-sterilizing medical treatments with mutagenic effects, the cargo cult science of masks (e.g. viral collectors, bacterial petri dishes, false sense of safety) in general use, denial of safe treatments and supplements (e.g. Vitamin-D in dark diversity blocs), and the braying of social contagion with collateral damage.

that we are empty and soulless

A Twilight faith, an ethical religion, and progressive liberal ideology are first-order forcings of a catastrophic anthropogenic dysfunctional convergence. And mortal gods and goddesses that promise good feelings. Pass the joint.

The Biden/Maidan/Slavic Spring with "benefits". The Russians worked with the Ukrainians to compensate for Kiev's denial of essential services in Crimea, and reclaim legal title to their property. They waited eight years to help Ukrainians stand against the aggression of the Kiev-aligned military and paramilitary axis. Then there is the illicit operation of diverse Wuhan-style labs, which in the woke... wake of medical progress, should be a concern to all of Ukraine's neighbors.

Penis envy, always. Too many "holes" in progressive gender ideology and academic performances.

Diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment, class-based bigotry) denies individual dignity, individual conscience, intrinsic value, breeds adversity and confusion.

1: Trump steered the US through the worst of the pandemic
2: The "historic" legislation is the cause of the historic inflation. And yes, he IS "getting credit for it". Of course, it's negative "credit", but that's what the laws deserve
3: Zelensky pulled things together. Biden was giving Putin the green light for a "minor incursion", and tried to get Zelensky to flee, and cause the Ukrainian resistance to collapse, after Putin invaded
4: The current White House is a hotbed of elder abuse, corruption, and assaults on America'n's freedom, and the lives of SCOTUS members. There is neither decency nor decorum there

Steering the country thorugh the worst of the pandemic:

What exactly did Biden "steer?" Trump's had already got the vaccines developed and manufactured, CDC did the work of setting standards and offering people advice. Biden didn't do anything here except ride Trump's coattails.

Passing historic legislation:

Which legislation? Unsaid. Could it be the spending bill that kick-started 9% inflation? How did Biden pass this legislation? Didn't the Congress pass this legislation. He just signed their work.

Pulling NATO together against Russian aggression:

Has NATO put troops into battle against Russia? Nope. Is the US at war with Russia? Nobody voted on that. Are we winning the war Biden got us into without Congressional approval? Isn't Europe funding the Russians by purchasing their oil and gas?

Restoring decency and decorum to the White House.

Biden isn't IN the White House. He's on a fake stage they built for him designed to look like the White House. Didn't he joke on Kimmel about jailing political enemies just after an assassination attempt? Some decorum, huh?

So yeah ... "performative."

If these are the Biden accomplishments, then it's no wonder his polling is at historic lows and why most Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Bing bing bing. The expectation was for the Russians to quickly win, and then the State Dept weenies to step in and negotiate a new status quo. Instead the US and NATO have been drawn into supporting an endless bloody slog, putting strain on economies worldwide, and demonstrating just how dysfunctional NATO actually is.

4: The current White House is a hotbed of elder abuse, corruption, and assaults on America'n's freedom, and the lives of SCOTUS members. There is neither decency nor decorum there

The man who enabled and protected his corrupt, crackhead son for fifty years is in no position to bring decency or decorum anywhere.

Iran has, or will have by next week, kicked out international nuclear inspectors. They can upgrade the quality of their fissile fuels to make bombs -- THIS YEAR. And Joe's team is still trying to restore a five-year-old deal that would slow that process down by six months?

North Korea is launching missiles at a pace Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin would be proud of. What's happening with the new US Space Force? Don't ask Joe. Meanwhile, all the other branches of the US Military are making history by sharing LGBT "Pride" memes in social media. From 'All Along The Watchtower' song analysis: Essentially the song is about attitudes towards corruption and privilege. In that the narrator seems to speak dismissively of the main characters in describing them as ‘the joker’ and ‘the thief’ respectively, he may be ironically representing society’s attitudes to those who fail to accept its norms. Nevertheless the joker’s criticisms seem serious.

Maybe I got that vibe because I represented ‘the thief’ as the one who stole the election, and 'the joker' would the performative activists. I don't know. Maybe there is something there, and maybe there isn't.

Speaking of potential presidential candidates, an excellent choice has appeared on the GOP horizon. Purdue University has announced that Mitch Daniels is moving on as Purdue's President effective Jan. 1, 2023. Daniels has served the university since January 2013 when he was appointed after two terms as Indiana's Governor. Among his accomplishments at Purdue were zero increases in tuition.

During his tenure as Hoosier Governor, Daniels cut the state government workforce by 18%, cut and capped state property taxes, and balanced the state budget through austerity measures. During the legislature's last session under Daniels, he signed a "right-to-work law", with Indiana becoming the 23rd state in the nation to pass such legislation.

This guy is a "doer" and the GOP needs to reestablish its conservative principles. Boiler Up!

People like gridlock. They don't like one party having all the power. The system is based on checks and balances. Therefore, most of the time not much gets done and much of politics is "performative" in the sense of being a staged production. Biden falls down as a performer -- as the face and voice of the administration -- but he and his team have failed even more in terms of job performance.

The worst of the pandemic happened during the Trump years and the tools to deal with it were also developed in the Trump years. The "historic legislation" Congress passed was a bundle of giveaways that contributed to inflation. Biden's bungling contributed to the Russian aggression, and is NATO really that united now? Anybody who thinks that "decency and decorum" have been restored to the White House isn't watching Joe very closely. The "return to decency and normality" means that people just stopped paying attention to anything that was actually going on in Washington.

But maybe, if Biden has any support at all after the mess he got us into, then he really isn't falling down as "performer" and figurehead. His shtick seems to work for some people, or at least he doesn't completely turn them off.

Counterpoint to Trump vs Biden "steering" the US through the pandemic: neither of them did. No one, at any level of government, "steered" the US through the pandemic in any meaningful way, not the President, not the governors or mayors, and certainly not the CDC. People muddled through, listening to the guidance from the government when the government happened to agree with them, and doing their best to ignore it otherwise.

The only government-led action on the pandemic that meaningfully contributed to controlling the pandemic was Trump's Operation Warp Speed. Biden's main contribution on vaccines was authorising direct distribution through pharmacies, circumventing the bottleneck that had developed at our inefficient public health bureaucracies. I think that was March or April 2021, and if I am remembering it correctly, it was a good move. Trump had made the mistake of assuming too much professionalism, competence, and good will on the part of the government. Some states (Florida?) had already started distribution through channels outside the bureaucracy, but my recollection is that around that time, other states (e.g. Virginia) were moving to cut off distribution through channels outside the bureaucracy (principally hospitals, in the case of Virginia), so it was an important and timely move to block those efforts by state and local governments.

Here's a TikTok video criticizing "performative work," and clearly she doesn't mean the performance that is getting the job done. It's the pretense of looking busy.

Years ago, when I worked in a big Wall Street law firm, I saw a guy — who I knew was leaving for the weekend — set up his office with an open desk drawer and things strewn about and the light left on — like it was a stage set for a play about the most hardworking guy in New York. If Daniels by some slim chance got the nomination, Gadfly would write comment after comment that Daniels was a Hitler clone and that no one should vote for him."

No doubt. These lefty foot soldiers like gadfly are simply playing their pathetic and obvious part in the latest democratical party "Pied Piper" strategy.

People like gridlock. They don't like one party having all the power. The system is based on checks and balances. Therefore, most of the time not much gets done and much of politics is "performative" in the sense of being a staged production.

Puh=LEEEZ!! Checks and balances have been destroyed by the Administrative State, which is hopelessly leftist and does what the hell it wants.

Why do you think it went after Trump so viciously??

Just the other day Biden announced that federal funding would be denied state and local agencies that don't spout the party line on LJBTQWERTYUIOP protections and privileges.

Who voted for that?

People do want a status quo, or a roll back. But are we talking about the government or congress? Unfortunately, Biden has run rampant making new ‘laws’ through government branches, and congress has done nothing to stop that.

Democrats are good at changing the meaning of words to fit their agenda so they can bypass all required legislation.

"Should Biden run for re-election?"

No, he shouldn't, and (I'm guessing) he won't. If he tries to run again, the Dems should reject him and find someone else. But then, the Dems have shown themselves incapable of producing truly worthy candidates for the presidency for so long, they will certainly run another feeble choice for the office in 2024, (possibly even Biden again, which no well-functioning party would permit.)

"No, he couldn't of."

...couldn't HAVE. Jeezus!

The absolute botch of retreat from Afghanistan (leading to surrender to the Taliban) seems to have dropped from the collective memory.

No, it hasn't.

That botch was the key point that started Biden's long slide into unpopularity. it overlays pretty much everything that's happened since then

1: It is my personal belief that by 2024 Biden's dementia will be so far along that he won't be able to run for re-election
2: It is also my personal belief that Jill Biden, who hates Harris, will fight like hell to keep Joe from being 25th Amendment removed and replaced w/ Harris before the end of his term
3: The Democrats do not have any competent candidates. For this you can mainly thank Barack Obama, and the slaughter he brought to Democrat candidates in any non-far left States
4: The other reason why the Democrats do not have any competent candidates is because the domination of the Party by the far left has blocked the ability of anyone sane to rise in the Party.

A: There are no Democrat Senators who could make good candidates, as was clearly shown in 2020
B: Governors is where you tend to get the best Presidents. The Dem bench there is a failure
b1: You have the "Blue State" Dem Governors: Gavin "French Laundry" Newsom, and Andrew "Kill Grandma" Cuomo, Neither has a chance on the national stage
b2: You have the "Purple State" Dem Governors: Wolfe in PA, Evers in WI, Granholm in MI, Polis in CO
Quick question: what are the major accomplishments of those governors? Anyone? Anything?
Wolfe is term limited out. The others have a high probability of losing this year, just from the Red Wave. (In 2018 8% more people voted in Dem Primaries than in GOP Primaries. This year 8% more are voting in GOP Primaries than in Dem ones. The Dems won the Congressional vote, in total, by 8% in 2018.)

It's really hard to run for President if you've lost your last election.

So, exactly who do the Democrats have to run in 2024? Harris, Hillary, Oprah, and Michelle Obama? Bernie? Bloomberg (ha!)?

Trump got more accomplished with all of that against him, than any other president has ever done. THAT is why he had to be stopped.

The reason why Trump WAS stopped is because he utterly sucked at personnel, because he was a businessman who did not understand how DC and the Federal Gov't worked.

Thus he constantly hired people who sabotaged his programs

I don't see him doing anything to fix that, and get around him a pool of people he can use to actually govern if he wins in 2024.

Which is why I've been moving to "I support DeSantis, even if Trump runs again". Because I want to win. Both Trump and DeSantis also want to win. but DeSantis knows HOW to win

The NATO alliance owes its revitalization to Russia, which scared everyone in Europe that Putin was going for Russian Empire 3.0. Scared them so much that Finland and Sweden decided it was better to be in than out.
