"Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It’s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago.... It was after what happened to George Floyd..."

"... that I began to wrestle with my having bought into systemic racism in ways I was never aware of. That was really the moment that I began to examine the ways I had participated. I knew then I needed to course-correct.... What makes this truly emotional for me is that I want this connection I didn’t have.... I deeply, deeply want this connection with the Black community that I didn’t have. Because of 'Friends,' I never attained that.... In this case, I’m finally, literally putting my money where my mouth is.... I want to make sure from now on in every production I do that I am conscious in hiring people of color and actively pursue young writers of color. I want to know I will act differently from now on. And then I will feel unburdened."

Kauffman — who gets this fawning publicity — endowed a professorship in the African and African American Studies department at Brandeis. The amount of her donation is 1% of her $400 million net worth. I'd say she ought to contribute something more like $40 million before she claims to have literally put her my money where my mouth is. It's still the wrong use of "literally," but it wouldn't be so bad.

She needs to divest herself of all $400 million of her ill-gotten gains from Systemic Racism and White Supremacy. Justice demands that she not keep any of what she so unjustly obtained due to 400 years of enslavement. She needs to move out of her mansion and live in some "affordable housing" slum building and subsist only on government hand-outs. There is no true "course-correcting" that would leave her warm and cozy within her current White power structure.

And maybe instead of giving that money to...well, you know...she give it to some Black people????

Wondering what she was doing led me to IMDB. She has created a Netflix show "Grace and Frankie," starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. It's about two women who hated each other until they learn their business-partner husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterstone) have been gay lovers for 20 years.

The trailer was painful to watch. Two elderly women trying to mouth lines like "the best is yet to come" and "I still don't know who I am," through their heavily botoxed faces was a cringe-fest. I can't imagine watching 94 episodes of this.

It's been running for seven years. Of the main cast, the only POCs are two black actors.

Four million is a pittance. If she really wanted to help, she'd contribute another four million to rebuild the minority-owned businesses destroyed through the "mostly peaceful" protests.

I heard a story about John D. Rockefeller, who almost single-handedly funded the creation of the University of Chicago. The Baptist minister who led the project met with JDR frequently, provided updates and so on. The day came when JDR said: I think I've given enough. You're in a position now to do a lot of fund-raising, and get money from other sources. Minister: You're absolutely right of course. Now let's have a brief prayer. "O Lord, provide guidance to this poor sinner as to how he might direct some more of his vast wealth ...." OK OK, said JDR, I get the message.

This seems overwrought and kind of silly. Degas painted a lot of pictures of white, female dancers. Should he have apologized for not painting black subjects? Or is it okay that he painted what moved him artistically to paint and left other artists to paint what they saw fit to paint?

"Friends" was a show about a young group of friends who very much stereotypically white. It was an immensely successful show. Does Kauffman imagine that she could have produced an equally successful show using black characters and writers? Norman Lear did, but he's Norman Lear -- and it's obviously what HE wanted to do. Obviously, there have been many great movies, shows, and plays that featured black characters the talents of black writers and directors. The idea that Kauffman should consider herself remiss because her show wasn't a "black" show is preposterous. It was a great show, and she should be completely and unapologetically proud of it. And if she thinks it's within her wheelhouse to do a "black" show, she shouldn't just give money to Brandeis, she should put her money where her mouth is and produce a great "black" show.

I never liked that show. The one saving grace was Jennifer Anniston's exceedingly tight tops. It just wasn't that funny. Nobody quotes Friends in the same way that they do Seinfeld. Which brings me back to The One where George tries to make a black friend. That's why there's no black friends in Friends. It wouldn't be real.

I wonder if I'll ever see anyone repenting of her systemic racism by tutoring one of the black students who have been left behind by the closing of the schools in the big Dem-run cities for in-person instruction during Covid. Or financing a program to hire tutors? Or linking participation in white fragility seminars with a consequential action, namely, tutoring the minority students who fell behind. Ironic if the black studies program this woman financed was able to explain why black studies programs in the 2020's did not study why minority schools in the big Dem cities closed at greater rates during Covid and remained closed longer and garnered no support for catch-up programs. (Hint: The teacher's unions relationship to the Dems and the culture matters more than the black voters and their children.)

I'm so sick and tired of RACE being used to divide us. I agree with Joe Smith. When BET starts honoring whites, then I'll worry about the lack of blacks in 1 sit com. I grew up in the 70's. I watched Archie Bunker, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, What's Happening, Good Times, ect....To claim that blacks weren't represented is a lie. RACE relations were so much easier then. I grew up in a VERY diverse neighborhood, and never did I see or hear any racism against ANY of the kids there.

Is she embarrassed over her lack of friends/contacts who are working class whites? Or evangelical Christians?

I bet she isn't. In fact, i'd bet that pretty much all her charity goes to people & Groups who directly or indirectly support Liberalism and the Democrat party. And are approved by Hollywood leftists.

"Friends" ran from 1994 to 2004. Google a search on something like "1990s black sitcoms" & check out how populated the category was. & if you include the 70s and 80s, you get more.
Anyone who's old enough to remember "Fresh Prince" and "The Jeffersons" and "Sanford & Son," and any number of other very funny & popular shows, knows that just because "Friends" maybe failed to include a black (or hispanic, or Greek, or South American, or Haitian, or Asian, et al.) character, does not evidence "systemic racism."

These people seem attention-hungry, and in today's "racism everywhere" environment this apparently what you do to feed that hunger.

BTW & speaking of celebrities seeking attention, anyone know the legal status of whatsisname, Alec Baldwin?

For years, a lot of liberals were disgusted with the actors, directors, etc., who spilled their guts to HUAC. It's clear that Hollywood types have always had fluid political and moral commitments, and that they'll do whatever they need to in order to remain bankable and "hip" to whatever is the trend.

Ironic. What happened to "St. Floyd" had nothing to do with race. The COVERAGE of what happened had everything to do with race.

Everyone remember the wall to wall coverage of this? https://nypost.com/2022/03/17/video-shows-death-of-california-man-while-held-down-by-cops/

I watched a couple of episodes of Friends. I found it a rowdy, frequently lawless brother/sisterhood bound, in no particular order, by machismo, tattoos, winged death-head insignia, booze, dope, smelly cats, and a lust for the unfettered freedom found in a coffee shop. I agree that everyone involved should give away all their money and then some.

Temujin said...

Acch. The supreme White Guilt on display here. Nauseating. She made a great show. It fit it's time for a large segment of the population. Not everyone watched it. Not all white people even liked it. You had to have a certain kinship with the characters and no show, no matter who or what writes it, will have a kinship with everyone. (I don't watch Steve Harvey shows.)

She can do whatever she wants with her money. My suspicion is that Brandeis is so over the top with Wokeness, it does not need more donations to keep that boat flowing. And those who can afford Brandeis, in another era, would have been the watchers of "Friends". Today they want us all reading by candlelight anyway, so chances are they won't care about your show.

One other thing, in her future endeavors, she's looking to make sure that people of color are represented. Great. How many? What percentage are you shooting for? What amount will assuage you of guilt and/or embarrassment going into new projects? What is the 'buyout amount' for assuaging White Guilt?

If I may suggest. Just focus on doing great work. Surround yourself with the best possible people- no matter their color, gender, or dialect. No one cares how many women or black people were on your staff, or even in the cast- if the show sucks. And if the show is great, they won't care then either. Focus on great work and talent. Leave the guilt to Jewish and Catholic mothers. Oh wait. She IS a Jewish mother. Well...that explains some of it.

A decent, but not great, piece of self-flagellation. A bit too rote and condescending. Tom Wolfe would get a chuckle but he probably saw better.

It's become a sub-genre of the dramatic arts.

As much shit as that show got for lacking diversity, it had an interracial relationship (Ross and Charlie Wheeler, played by Aisha Tyler, who also plays a character dating a white guy in "Archer") at a time where that really wasn't done on TV.

The characters on "Friends" were: An annoying sad sack who thought he was cool but wasn't, a formerly overweight control freak (who dated a much older friend of her father's), a princess who had never held down a job until she left her fiance at the altar (and then married someone else while blackout drunk), a high-strung neurotic who turned everything into a bad joke, a dumb guy whose dating life verged on the sexually predatory, and a bizarre kook whose parents both left when she was young and whose sister was a porn star.

I wonder which of these people would have been better served if they were portrayed as a person of color?

I would respect her far more, and would not criticize her donation had it actually been to a worthwhile educational cause. Trapping more blacks in African-American study programs is just fucking criminal. Pay for them to study mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, philosophy, but for goodness sake, not the ghettoes of academic pursuits.

I am not black, but it would piss me off to have these shitty ass college degrees offerred to me like they are some important intellectual pursuit. It would piss me off if colleges everywhere were offering Hillbilly Studies as a college degree. It would be an insult, and I am a born and bred hillbilly.

The Borgia Pope of the 1500's was terrific at selling indulgences to those who hoped to reduce the punishment for their sins, and continuing that tradition today, wealthy lefties (very often Jews) are always seeking ways to ensure that the pitchfork mob passes them by when the riots start or if the box cars must be loaded again. As one guy at a television network put it, the idea is to keep them surly but not rebellious.

It would have been demeaning for a Black actor to have played Joey. Ethnic Catholics are to some extent interchangeable with Black people in her world. Italian Catholics don't mind being portrayed as dumb horndogs (see Grease, et al.), but that's not a role you can comfortably cast with a Black man. Ross was a Jewish intellectual. In the show, The Good Place, they had a Black man play the intellectual. So it can be done. Other ethnic groups can play intellectuals, but it saves so much work for the writer if you just make the intellectuals Jewish. You don't have to fill in the spaces. Chandler was definitely white. Maybe not necessarily WASP, but definitely white with WASP mannerisms......I guess some of the women could have been played with Black women. In my era, I knew plenty of Black hippie chicks. A Black woman could have played Phoebe, but the racial cross currents would have been confusing, and I don't think Halle Berry could sing about a smelly cat with the same depth and sorrow that Lisa Kudrow brought to her performance.

"Colleges everywhere." Clear enough to me now, Yancey.

But on that score, if geographic propinquity is relevant, the African-American population is spread more widely than are Hillbillies per se . . . So IF such studies programs are legit (and I think they can be even if they often aren't) then it's appropriate to offer them widely IMO.
