"We're at war."

Democrats love war these days.

What the hell happened to this party?

Fight unauthorized proxy wars, kill babies up to a minute before birth, and mutilate children on-demand.

What a platform to run on...

Reinstate the draft! And include womyn of all stripes!

These criminals are willing to fight to the last Ukrainian. Their goal is simple; to destroy about 1/10th as much Russian military equipment as the Biden regime abandoned in Afghanistan.

Lucien said...

Eighty-two is about the right age for Democratic leadership, but does Steny think Congress has declared war on someone?

Vance said...

Ah yes… all of this “You cannot criticize Biden in a time of war!” Sure didn’t stop Hoyer from criticizing Donald Tump while we still had troops in Afhanistan fighting, did it?

The egregious double standards are nothing new.

rhhardin said...

It's a proxy war. Russia supplied N Vietnam the same way on us.

Michael K said...

They hope this will distract from their record on the economy.

Austria-Hungary thought that attacking Serbia would distract from the ethnic problems of the Austrian empire. Hmmm.

We have a handicapped president. We’re lucky to have a constitution that doesn’t let him do much.

holdfast said...

I must’ve slept through that vote.

Buckwheathikes said...

Who's "we," Steny?

You are at war. Not me. My representative hasn't voted for any war yeah or nea.

So YOU are at war. Not me.

Societies that supply weapons, training, support, and messaging to a combatant in a conflict are a party to that conflict. They may never fight their rival directly, but there will be consequences.

Only the Eloi think there won't be consequences for not directly taking up arms.

"We're at war."

Declared by Congress?

On what grounds?

For what purpose?

Quayle said...

It is this kind of myopic recklessness that can lead to some very bad outcomes. Sure, he may think he is only saying what he has to say in order to pass some legislation in the House. And he may think its only a few more words in an ocean of words that pour forth in the halls of Congress. But that doesn't mean that the Russians will see it that way.

Leland said...

It seems Democrats really want a nuclear exchange to detract from high oil prices, baby formula shortages, and rising inflation. The scary part is the likelihood they'll get what they want and it will work.

Kevin said...

Steny's at war with MAGA.

You know, the real terrorists.

mikee said...

Proxy war, nor war-war. Proxy war just bleeds the participants. Not the logistics supplier. See "Cold War" in Wikipedia for examples from Korea to Iraq.

wendybar said...

Where's Mary Poppins to spin the disinformation??

wendybar said...

Informed that we are at war. We are sending the Ukraine billions of dollars. WE can't afford gas, or good, and baby formula is disappearing from the shelves but we have PLENTY of money to give House Members and their staffs free Pelaton memberships?? Something is not right in this country. We are living in an upside down world. Meanwhile, we have homeless veterans, yet, we are shipping illegals all over the country.

It's what they wanted, it's why Trump was called "Putin's cock holster," because that's what you call somebody who wants to 'neGOtIaTe' when you want a war with "no off ramps," as Lindsay Graham puts it.

When did Congress hold the Section !, section 8 vote declaring war?

CWJ said...

I have to agree with Greenwald. Neither side in this conflict are angels, and neither is the devil. The drumbeat for war with a nuclear armed opponent has been reckless and disgusting. These self serving fools may get millions of us killed, and the country destroyed, and for what - a pathetic political distraction to divert the public's attention away from our very real domestic problems in a desperate bid to save themselves and their party come November.

madAsHell said...

I'm not sure why he would say "We're at war." I'm not sure how that translates to votes in November.

Slightly off topic, and I don't trust most news reports, but if the Keystone Cops were to prosecute a war, then it might look like the Russian army. The Russian Army seems to be getting pummeled.

I can't believe Putin has that much political capital. This is going to affect the sale of Russian arms as well.

Yeah, the left seems to perpetually be in the All Projection All The Time mode.

Who's the warmongers here? Not Trump, not the Republicans (though far too many did vote for the recent aid package, they weren't the ones driving the effort), not the scary alt-Right.... No indeed it's our beloved, tolerant, loving Dems!

Captain Curt said...

Doubtless he meant 'war with Republicans.'

We are? Amazing that the president didn't make a request for a congressional declaration first.

(By the way, Lend-Lease is not war, nor is what Russia did in Vietnam war.)

We NEED to face FACTS
and the Facts ARE;
The International Communist Conspiracy is trying to to sap and impurify All of our precious bodily fluids.
A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works
We are rapidly approaching a moment of truth both for ourselves as human beings and for the life of our nation. Now, truth is not always a pleasant thing. But it is necessary now to make a choice, to choose between two admittedly regrettable, but nevertheless *distinguishable*, postwar environments: one where you got twenty million people killed, and the other where you got a hundred and fifty million people killed.

I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks.

I mean, That IS WHY we are fighting them Ruskies, isn't it?
I mean, There IS SOME REASON Why we are going down the path to Nuclear Damnation; isn't there?
I mean, Isn't There?

Serious Statement
The United States Military has a MANDATORY RETIREMENT Age
10 U.S. Code § 1253: Mandatory retirement age for general and flag officers is age 64. Officers in O9 and O10 positions may have retirement deferred until age 66 by the SECDEF or until age 68 by the President.
68 and you are OUT, NO exceptions

You Know Why. Because when a person gets old, they might still be nice smart people; but you Sure As HELL, do NOT want them involved in War. A person in, say, their 80's might even think that the USA is involved in a war with Russia. You DON'T WANT THAT.

tim in vermont said...

There IS SOME REASON Why we are going down the path to Nuclear Damnation

Well. the Uke Nazis have tons of kompromat on Joe Biden, that's part of it. Trump was impeached for even asking about it.

The last time Congress declared war was 1942. Now, how many "conflicts" has the United States been in since then? Screw the constitution, history proves you don't need anything from Congress to go to war.

jim is really hot after that Russian "hack" of the DNC. Snowden told us how evil our intelligence agencies. We certainly can't have that. Next thing we'll be asking about stealing the 2020 election.

The Ukrainian members of parliament would be quite ready to have a control commission of some kind to monitor the money for rebuilding, as Senator Rand Paul is asking. They all know how corrupt segments of their society are. And ours. Who wants Biden in charge of a giveaway? But overall the issue isn't the linked corruption in our two societies; it's the future of the better bits of our two countries.
My view of the war in the Ukraine is that this is a Czechoslovakia-moment like the moment when Hitler annexed the Sudetenland in 1938 and the West appeased him at Munich in order to avoid war. We might have stopped Hitler in 1938 by refusing to pressure Czechoslovakia to surrender and instead assisting it. There probably would have been no world war had we done so. But instead we appeased and we still got the war only under worse conditions. And this is what I think is at stake now. Russia intends to expand at least through the whole of its former empire until it is stopped. There will never be better time to stop it.
Russia's next maneuver may be to annex the parts of the Ukraine which it presently controls and then threaten nuclear war if "Russian soil" is attacked. But it's quite possible that the Russian invading army will be encircled or cut off from supplies or will collapse before Russia annexes territory if we keep helping the Ukraine.

Churchill on Munich
“We have suffered a total and unmitigated defeat … We are in the presence of a disaster of the first magnitude … we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road … we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies: “Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting”. And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be proffered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigor, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time.”

Candide said...

So far Ukraine was a problem for Russia. If Ukraine defeats Russia, it might become a future problem for US. So far Ukraine was willing to take orders from US, but if it defeats Russia it will take orders from nobody.

We have seen this movie in Afghanistan. As soon as Soviets withdrew, Mujaheddin declared themselves heroes and delegated Americans to the role of sidekicks. We know what happened after that.

Maybe knock off the vodka tonics for awhile before you start typing.

Saint Croix said...

Greenwald is a modern Walter Duranty.

To pull off a Duranty he'd have to deny that anybody's being killed in the Ukraine, and he would successfully shut down any inquiry into the situation.

The modern day Duranty is the media that's been hiding all the babies who have been killed under Roe v. Wade. No independent reporter could pull off a Duranty.
