"Most recovery houses offer transportation services following surgery, often a minivan with the passenger seats reclined to make space for an inflatable mattress..."

"... where patients, who are not supposed to sit down or lie on their backsides for at least two to four weeks, can lie on their stomachs during the ride. When they arrive, the beds they’ve booked — usually two to a room — can cost anywhere from $80 to $400 a night. Some recovery houses have nurses on site who can check vitals and provide massages that they claim help with healing. But some women complain that they have experienced poor service and unsanitary conditions at recovery facilities, like toilets that don’t work and inedible meals.... A whole host of things can go wrong; most notably, the repurposed fat can travel through veins in the buttocks to pulmonary arteries and chambers of the heart, causing fat embolisms. Transferred fat can also migrate beneath the muscle, tearing gluteal veins. According to some recent surveys, for every 13,000 B.B.L.s performed in the United States, one results in death."

From "Butt Lifts Are Booming. Healing Is No Joke. Beauty, pain, race and money play out in Miami’s post-surgical recovery houses" (NYT).

Lots of photographs at the link. All of the women pictured appear to be black, and the reader is assumed to find this puzzling, because we are offered this explanation: "For Black women, many of whom have always possessed a version of the B.B.L. body, it is difficult to square this popularity with the fact that their natural bodies have been denigrated for generations." But "the B.B.L. body" is in style and seen on social media, and "Black women aren’t immune to wanting a seemingly quick way of acquiring the figure that defines desire today."

We're not told if white women are getting this gruesome surgery in the same proportion, so it's hard to think in terms of feminism, but I see that the top-rated comment blames men: "Yet another example of how men convince women to engage in body dysmorphia to meet their approval." Can women take some responsibility for their approval-seeking... if that's what's happening here? And isn't this approval-seeking a matter of women trying to get the jump on other women? I'd say more, but since the article is exclusively about black women going for this horrible surgery, the present-day convention is to mind one's own business.

And yet, if I'm supposed to butt out of this butt butchery, why is The New York Times presenting all these close-up color photos of the sliced-up, bloody butts of women of color? For titillation? To boost the egos of its white women readers? The article writer, Sandra E. Garcia, appears to be black, so I suppose it is not my place to detect systemic racism.

Adding on Butts................... BAD??

What changes are people allowed to make? And WHO pays for the surgeries ?

When I saw Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner dancing together in a circle, they looked like 2 giant ANTS with their big giant bottoms. Kim Kardashian looks like an ANT too. I guess that is attractive to some, but it cracks me up that they think they look good, but they look like giant bugs.

Only true in the sense that women, as the sex with the better social radar, pretty rapidly figure out what catches men's attention and turn that to competitive advantage.

Most married men figure this out as soon as the competitive phase of courtship is over.

If it makes them feel better, I'll assume the blame for this situation.

Heaven forbid anyone ever blame the person in the mirror.

Yet another example of how those blaming everything on the patriarchy strip women of their agency and responsibility for their choices.

Careful, now. Don't cut the blue wire. It's really a red wire in disguise.

That said, thanks for the information. Can I say that if I read this as fiction instead of news, I would be sufficiently horrified that I would put the book down?

Can women take some responsibility(?)

No. Next question.

Of course, they blame men because no woman can be held responsible for anything to them. They have no agency to them. They are just reflections of what men want to them. Then they wonder why they do not seem to be treated as equals?

I don't think men are the motivation.
Women fuss over their "look" seeking to catch the eye of a man. But, Women seek their emotional validation from all the other women. Women are the true critics of ALL other women.

Most married men figure this out as soon as the competitive phase of courtship is over.

Men and women break up/divorce, because when a man gets married he thinks his wife will NEVER change. Women know their man will change.

Both are wrong.

Yes, I don't think it's rational persuasion intentionally carried out by men. I think it's more that men have a powerful instinct and women become aware that they can do things that evoke a response in men. As I said in the post, I think women should take responsibility for that. The motivation to use a man for economic support or to father children or for prestige should not turn what the woman is doing into something forced by oppression.

I'd say more, but...

Maybe if BBL stood for Brazilian Butt Law. "Jane was pulled over for her 3rd BBL last night."

Just what is a Brazilian Butt anyway? There might should be a Brazilian Butt Law specifying the geometry and the esthetic of what can be called a Brazilian Butt and what must be called...something else, kind of like the German Purity Law for beer. Sounds like these butt lifters need to held to stricter standards.

Black men have always loved a Big Butt so it's silly to say that it's been denigrated for generations. I remember being a teenager and shopping in a 5-7-9 store (remember those?) Anyway, a middle aged Black man came in looking for clothes for his wife. The store clerk was asking him to describe her size and he kept saying, "she looks good" and making motions to show a large butt and boobs. The clerk showed him clothes from their store to see if they'd fit and he'd answer, "no, she looks good." The clerk said he might have better luck at Lane Bryant. What a great husband.

I know a Mexican woman who has had the surgery. She had it done in Mexico. Her proportions afterward were ridiculous. She was married, had three kids. She did it for her, not anyone else.

Interesting to see Althouse post a take rooted in evolutionary psychology. I am pretty sure that the fact that human women are the only female great apes able to perfectly hide the fertile part of their cycle and the only ones sexually receptive for the whole month has something profound to do with relations between the sexes, but for ideologues, it’s a stone best left unturned.

“Why do women have pussies? So men will talk to them.” Not really, so men will stick around and protect and feed them and their children. Why do men prefer chaste women, because men who are happy to spend their lives raising other men’s children are at an evolutionary disadvantage. Evolution happened and defines us, even if we don’t perfectly understand it, some inferences are pretty strong.

I always thought I understood the meaning of 'titillation' -- until I read that sentence. And then I looked at the photos and was *really* perplexed.

You must only consume wholesome things. I'm thinking of horror movies and the kind of pornography I have only read about. The appeal is to a perverse fascination with what is disgusting and horrible. People get a visceral thrill from that. Perhaps you a playing naive. Perhaps you're attempting at "tits" joke: there are no "tits," only asses.

Ann Althouse said...

It is to grab at your idea of beauty, and what guarantee do you have of your own good taste. Many people fall for the idea that if big is good, bigger is better or if small is good, smaller is better.
