At the Star-Flowered Café...

IMG_0595

... you don't have to be a star to comment on this blog.

The flower in the photo, photographed on May 17th, is, I believe, "Maianthemum stellatum (star-flowered, starry, or little false Solomon's seal, or simply false Solomon's seal; star-flowered lily-of-the-valley or starry false lily of the valley; syn. Smilacina stellata)... a species of flowering plant, native across North America."

Check out Jonathan Haidt having a Jordan Peterson moment. Sounding like JP is almost as bad as sounding like Trump 🫣

False Solomon's seal covers a quarter of our front garden. Such a beautiful sight, one of the early producers here in the often soggy Pacific northwest spring. Later in the season it sports cherry red berries that various birds seem eager to enjoy, so the plant serves dual purposes.

Now if only our local and national leaders were as reliably pleasing and useful. Yeah, I know, way too much to ask, I understand they're not as evolved even as much as flora native to the continent. I can only wish I was content to restrict myself to the constraints of the front and back gardens. But I'm weak, I just can't resist knowing what is happening out there. Though invariably I'm sorry I felt so compelled to find out.

Maybe there will be a time when I won't feel sad or angry at leaders acting stupidly or have to worry about events they set in motion. Not counting on it. At most we hope for better, but pretty shabby odds that ever makes a difference.

I saw a very similar flower out walking today, but I think mine was a Virginia Sweetspire. Long raceme, drooping down rather than pointing up. But the individual flowers looked very similar.

If you can site them someplace shady and damp, you'll get really showy pink-turning-bright red fruit clusters in early fall. They are kind of weedy for the home garden, though.

Jordan Peterson could give up 50 IQ points and still be smarter than you.

Whatever you make think of his opinions, he is unquestionably very intelligent.

I agree with almost nothing Bill Clinton has to say, but I give him his due; he is a very smart guy.

Grow up.

Regarding Depp Heard trial, is it just me but Amber's hairstyles distinguish which/ what day of testimony should you look them up in you tube?

Well, looks like Sarah (Pecan Pie) Huckabee Sanders is a serious contender.

Every parent in every state should be given a voucher to either send their kid to the school of their choice, or to home-school.

Republicans and conservatives (not always the same) should be making this a huge issue.

It was a big issue before this school shooting and it will continue to be so.

My favorite flower this time of year is Lilies of the Valley. The smell reminds me of my grandma. I loved her very much.

What your life can truly be.

I'm about 1/3 of the way into Paul Lockhart's "Firepower" (not to be confused with Basil Hughes' classic of the same title). So far a good synthesis and reframing of the modern era through the lens of military and naval technology. Nary a footnote, nor glimpse of the Learned Ibid.

"You don't have to be a star, baby, to be in my show." -- Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.

I was going to say that it was weird that they were in the 5th Dimension with Kenny Rogers, but I looked it up and Kenny's group was the First Edition.

Mike Pence probably would be "worse than Trump," because he's a born follower, but either one would have to be better than Joe Biden. I'm not scared of either or hostile to either, and not just because Pence has no chance of winning.

Dennis Knudsen, a former Republican lawmaker in Wisconsin resigned from his seat on the state’s bipartisan election commission Wednesday, announcing that his acceptance of the truth that Donald Trump did not win the 2020 presidential election has made him an ineffective representative of his party on the board.

Maybe Denny wants to get another Trump Liar onto the commission to ensure that the bi-partisan commission is totally ineffective in assuring honest elections in the future. Obviously, he deplores the Big Lie but resigns anyway to make way for Robert Spindell — a Trump supporter who illegally signed documents purporting to be an elector in 2020 despite Biden’s win in the state, then voted as a member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission to not sanction himself and 9 other Republicans who claimed electoral authority. So can we take this to be a weird version of Wisconsin Nice!

Oh my goodness 🤭

A reaction to my comment 👆🏽bears out the JH biblical quote in the video I linked to.

You see, I trying to amuse myself by projecting what a “woke” reaction might be to JH quoting the Bible. I do this all the time. Little did I realize that would literally contribute to the confusion described in the video I linked to. I was following up on the “Musk sound like Trump” post from the other day. You see… I was trying to make the point, without explicitly making it, that if enough people start sounding like so and so, then it might be because so and so has something to say that needs to be said again and again.

But, alas… You can’t be circumspect in the time of tribalism.

I should’ve said ‘Watch JH DESTROY attempts to stifle free speech’ or some such.

My bad.

According to my iPhone you’ve identified it correctly. (In case you didn’t know if you have a picture of a plant in your photos you can tap the little “i” and it will bring up the information screen with the option to identify it for you.)

Morning Joe and his sidekick Mika just labelled Beto an absolute hero. The rest of the country - not so much.

Ever wonder when the Commie-Pinko Dems say they want "common sense" gun control solutions, they rarely get specific? And on those rare occasions when they do, it would not have done squat to prevent such shootings. Their mantra: we must do something, this is something.

“CARTHAGO DELENDA EST!”

The Roman statesman, Cato the Elder used to end all his political speeches with this phrase, even if his speech had nothing to do with Carthage. The phrase means, “Carthage must be destroyed.” (via St Thomas Aquinas University Parish)

The Dems will not utter this, but they surely mean it.

Michael Sussmann, as is appropriate, will not testify in the John Durham prosecution designed to make his telling FBI's James Baker about data found by experts that linked communication exchanges between the Trump Organization and Russia's Alfa Bank into an imaginary conspiracy, simply because Sussmann does work for the DNC.

Throughout his testimony, former FBI official James Baker insisted he had a clear memory that, at the 2016 meeting, Michael Sussmann claimed he was not bringing the allegations to the FBI on behalf of any client.

“I’m 100 percent confident that he said that in the meeting,” he said. “Michael’s a friend of mine and a colleague, and I believed it and trusted that the statement was truthful.”

Baker also read a text message from Sussmann setting up the meeting in which the lawyer said he was coming to see Baker “on my own — not on behalf of a client or company.”

The Sussmann trial, U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper has said, is not about Clinton or Trump. Judge Cooper is expected to give jury instructions that the charged act has to be what Sussmann said on Sept. 19 in his face-to-face meeting with Baker. "So we don't need no superstar - just come as you are!" And wrap this thing up before the Memorial Day weekend.
