The Ukrainian postal service issued stamps showing a Ukrainian fighter giving a Russian warship the finger.

The NYT reports.

People lined up for hours to get these stamps — a million were printed — which quickly sold out.

The image related to an incident early in the conflict, when a warship demanded the surrender of a small group of fighters guarding a rocky island in the Black Sea. The gesture by the fighter was a visual representation of the profane phrase one of the island’s defenders used in a radio transmission, in which he told the warship where to go....

That's a wordy way to avoid quoting the phrase "Russian warship, go fuck yourself." But the stamp avoided displaying the words. It switched to the wordless finger.

And then, the day after the stamps came out, the Ukrainians hit a Russian ship — the Moskva — and the ship later sank.

Martial history is replete with final done themselves proud. futile gestures. From the Spartans at Thermoplye to the French at Camerón to McAuliffe at Bastogne the Ukrainians have done themselves proud. The stamp itself is a classic. I'd like to have one on an envelope cancelled. I collect that kind of thing ..

Ukraine is certainly winning the media war in the West; however what is happening along the coast of the country is pretty easy to see by looking at a map, or the export figures from their ports.

Is a wordy way like a second mention?

I love that gesture! If you look closely at my avatar you will find a photo of me giving 2 one finger salutes to statues of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels that sit in a park in front of the Berlin Rathaus near Alexanderplatz. My wife's cousins, who grew up in the GDR, suffered under it and stood on the top of the Berlin Wall near the Pariser Platz the day the wall fell, had it framed. That gesture was made during our first visit to meet them 25 years ago and resulted in our immediate bonding. We're taking the two oldest grandsons to Germany this summer so they can meet the cousins and gain a better understanding of what communism really does to its population before they head off to college next fall.

The Ukrainians didn’t just sink a Russian ship, they sunk the Russian ship.

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

Newspaper publisher "the man who shot liberty valence"

In other words, given the choice between truth and fake news, go with the fake news.

This story about the soldiers on the island has been through so many iterations in the past 6 weeks, I have no idea what the current version is supposed to be. Much less what the actual truth is. Or if the story is completely fabricated.

But yeah, it sounds good. Print the myth. Our some version thereof. Just another day at the office at that corrupt shithole that is Ukraine.

Yes. There's no first mention, because it's unmentionable. You have to start at what would otherwise be 2.

So the profanity was from the Ukrainians. The horrible actions of the Ukrainian fighters is so bad that we cannot outright say what it is. We can say without reservation what the Russians did.

I guess you do learn things from reading the NYT.

The ship’s radar crew was distracted by one or more drones while two Neptune missiles approached just above the heavy waves and hit the ship. Those two missiles - one mention from each hand.

Fortunately, it seems the soldiers on Snake Island were not killed. They surrendered and were taken prisoner by the Russians. You can look it up.
It was a great story though.

"proud. futile gestures"

As cities get flattened, farmers can't plant, "number of refugees hits nearly 5 million," "IMF sees more dire economic picture," UNFAO food price index "between February and March, it spiked by 12% - a giant leap - to an all-time high." Etc. etc.

War as a baseball game. The fans get sourviners (sic) and make gestures. Men are dying but the civilians are having a fun time buying stamps and saying "fuck you Russia". Maybe killing civilians through bombing isn't such a completely bad idea. Maybe if some of these stamp collectors got wounded or killed they'd get serious about stopping the war.

As Trump wrote, its time to start negotiations and stop fighting.

In pointing out that Ukraine is a corrupt shithole country I do not mean to minimize that Russia is a corrupt shithole too.

Probably about equally corrupt.

So back away from the keyboard, Howard. I am not supporting Putin. I'd love to see each country destroy the other.

(where is Natalie jaresko these days and what is she up to? Hmmm?)

For a country that was supposed to welcome the Russians as liberators and lose within a week, the Ukrainians have done a remarkable job. It is no longer a forgone conclusion that the Russians will win.

My best estimate is that, when the Ukrainian Civil War is over, the eastern provinces will be "autonomous" (meaning, Russian puppet states, which is probably fine by most of the populace), and the rest of Ukraine will have promised not to join NATO or the EU.

Which is a deal they could have had in January.

Aided and abetted by Western technology, munitions, and resources since the Biden/Maidan/Slavic Spring, two years under the current regime, targeted Ukrainians for disenfranchisement, denial of essential services, and progressive conflict.

My comment was sarcasm.

Not surprising that others here are serious.

Will any of you ever take these repeated opportunities to show that you have some human decency?

Meanwhile -
BREAKING: Russian military research facility, apparently involved in development of surface-to-air & ballistic missiles, located in Tver, not too far from Moscow, is on fire with multiple dead and injured.

and while that's happening -

BREAKING: Russia - Dmitrievsky Chemical Plant burned down today on the outskirts of Moscow. This is the largest Russian manufacturer of chemical solvents. Located 250 miles EAST of Moscow. We are beginning to see a pattern develop.

No one is attacking you. They are expressing their opinion on the topic. If that opinion differs from yours (or mine) you can point out the flaw in their argument. Accusing people who disagree with you of having no human decency is an ad hominem, not an argument.
