"About 2016, when [Erica Anderson] began working with the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at UC San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital, she noticed a growing group of transgender youth..."

"... adolescents who had not appeared to question their gender much, or at all, before puberty. Some drifted from one identity to the other: gender-questioning, trans, nonbinary, gay. And many of their cases were complicated by anxiety, depression, autism, bipolar disorder or other mental health conditions that predated their desire to transition.... Online, a stream of transgender influencers and activists told teens that if they felt uncomfortable with their bodies, or didn’t fit in, maybe they were trans. Some coached kids on how to bind their breasts, how to change their name and pronouns at school, how to push their parents for testosterone. 'To flatly say there couldn’t be any social influence in formation of gender identity flies in the face of reality,' Anderson said. 'Teenagers influence each other.'... In her view, gender-affirming care is not accepting everything a teen says at face value, but engaging with the patient in an empathetic, open-minded way.... What did Cody mean, she asked, when he referred to his gender as abstract?... 'One friend says that their gender is the same vibe as a raccoon. They’re not saying that their gender is a raccoon. They’re saying that their gender has the same, like, chaotic, dumpster vibes as raccoons.' 'Dumpster?' Anderson asked. 'What would the human version of that be like?' 'There isn’t one; it’s just the same chaotic energy that their gender has,' Cody said. 'Which is why it’s, like, very hard to explain. It’s just kind of like a dialect — a way to talk about gender that just kind of builds up within groups.'"

Another moral panic is ready to deflate into nothingness. We have seen it before. There is nothing new under our sun. A dog will return to his vomit, and a sow will return to her mire. And the burnt fools bandaged finger will go wabbeling back to the fire.

When I was in high school, the pregnant girls were moved to The Good Shepard school. Otherwise, the school administration knew they would a have copy-cat pregnancies.

Wait, this never happened before.

"not accepting everything a teen says at face value"

What a concept.

Is this the beginning of a strategic prog retreat? If so, how will the trans promoters be held accountable for the damage done?

Seriously, Can't We ALL Agree; that if some kid is a freak (or a geek (or a nerd (or a dweeb)));
That we should put them on chemical castration* drugs, and pump them full of hormones?
You know.. So that we can STERILIZE Them, so that they don't breed?
I mean.. We DON'T Want those bizaroes BREEDING**, do we?

chemical castration* We need a better name, the real name sounds scary; let's call them puberty blockers?

"Gender-affirming care" is a euphemism for chemical and/or surgical mutilation and sterilization of young people. It is ugly, hideous, depraved, and should be described accurately and without resort to understatement or weasel words.

Allow me to propose the vast majority of these cases do not represent gender dysphoria (as the left would have it) or some kind of sexual perversion of children by adults (as the right would have it); instead it is simply a rebellion by teenagers against the oversexualization our culture imposes upon them at too early an age. Those who feel cultural pressure to be sexualized at the moment of puberty (or even earlier) may now declare to their peers that their gender identity is complex, shifting, and imprecise, which in turn buys them time to mature. It's a secular version of a religious-school uniform, a largely asexual way to divert attention from oneself.

I’m sorry- I can’t read the article.

I wonder- could she be concerned b/c she may have been wrong is mutilating/sterilizing all of those kids? That the reasons they went through w/a permanent solution to a temporary problem were contrary to reality and some kind of contagion, as the psychologists w/out woke agendas are proclaiming?

Here, Wikipedia has the story;
"In June 2010, Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne announced a $100 Million Gift to UCSF Children's Hospital with the goal of not only seeing the new hospital built but significantly advancing children's health worldwide.

In 2020, all of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals' placed nationally in all 10 ranked pediatric specialties on U.S. News & World Report."

My father was a pediatrician. He loved children. Used to take me along with him on his house calls. He had a spotlight mounted next to the window on his huge old Dodge, so he could read the house numbers, driving around town after dinner in the rain. I hesitate to say what he would have thought about Erica Anderson.

Erica Anderson is a butcher's assistant. Doesn't matter which Med School graduate holds the meataxe. Anderson finds the victims and leads them to the butcher. And probably makes a nice living at it. I'm guessing he has enough in his retirement accounts that he's thinking about cutting back on his "practice".

A transgender psychologist has helped hundreds of teens transition.

He's an evil person with a degree in psychology, and thus degreed, uses the power of it to harm people. Let's go with some quotes from his very own website: Many recognize at some point in their lives that they do not fit the sex/gender to which they were assigned at birth... Psychobabble nonsense. The sec/gender assigned at birth? Except for a very very small minority- the penis or lack thereof determines the sex. Sex/gender isn't "assigned" to them, it's what they're born with. Part of the job of every society ever existing since humans became human is training and developing male and female infants and children to fill their roles in that society as functioning men and women. In many societies males who didn't make the cut were culled as being useless. Females less so- there's always a function for women to serve.

To continue the quote: and are unsure where this might leave them, this in a world dominated by a binary (male/female) construction of gender. Gee, a binary male/female world. I wonder how this could have come about. Oh, wait- I know. I learned it in biology. There are males, there are females, and in order for the human race to continue, they have to get together and have children! And, from biology 101- you can't change from one to the other. XX or XY determines the role. (with a very small percentage of mutations that can be ignored or brushed aside by society- because 1. they're a very small minority 2. They can't reproduce.)

Oh, and when it refers to "a transgender psychologist" the newspaper is itself engaging in obfuscation, the fancy word for lying. He's a mentally ill male who's been catered to and encouraged in his mental illness instead of treated. Thing about mental illness- not all can be cured. But encouraging them in their illness so they can then continue to aid others down the path of more severe mental illness is just plain stupid. If they're doing no harm to others, and not violent, a healthy society can tolerate a few mentally ill among us. Emperor Norton the First comes to mind. Erica Anderson, which was not his birth name" - referred to as their "Dead name" by similar mentally ill people - is doing harm.

One thing I see referenced in nearly every article I see regarding teenagers and transitioning (and it's in this one) is the concept of these teenagers feeling like they "don't fit in". I may have had some horribly unusual adolescence, but I certainly remember feeling like I didn't fit in when I was 13 or 14. Isn't that pretty much the basic description of your early teenage years, a time when you are awkward and have trouble fitting in? When did we enter this state where one must be blissfully happy all the time?

That's another question I'd like answered. Since we've decided to allow young children to make life altering decisions that may have profound future consequences with regard to both their physical and mental health; are we going to allow them to start buying alcohol? Will they be able own firearms? Will we start letting them borrow money from banks? These are all things we don't let children do because society thinks they are not mature or experienced enough to be able to see all the ramifications of such decisions, but it's ok to let them choose to suspend puberty and have their genitalia surgically modified? It makes no sense.

If it's really bad... then have the medical profession agree not to "transition" anybody under 21 years of age

About 35 years ago a friend of mine, a young woman in her early twenties, wanted a tubal ligation. Two doctors told her they did not perform the procedure on anyone under 30. She was frustrated, but simply used other contraceptives until she was 30, then had the procedure. I know others who were certain in their early 20's that they never wanted to have kids, but were later thrilled to be parents.

Since the doctors have no way of knowing which 20-something (or teenager) is going to change their mind in a few years, I think the best way to carry out the Hippocratic oath to "do no harm" is to hold off on life-altering procedures until patients are old enough that they likely know and understand the long term consequences of their choice. In many cases, tincture of time is the best medicine.

I don't think he has the moral depth to be a monster, he's just a morally vacuous idiot with an immense ego, willing to kiss any dick that's properly presented, and intellectually incapable of understanding that objective reality exists, independent of his audience's fee-fees.

"The long term damage to these kids will be massive but we will not be able to read about it." We already are reading about some of them.

We already know that delaying puberty in young males results in diminished bone growth which is never recovered, even if the puberty blockers are stopped.

We already know that testosterone treatments results in permanent alteration, i.e., lowering of the voice, in females undergoing female to male treatments, even if they decide to stop their transition.

And then there are transwomen who decide they want to start a family and then discover that they can no longer produce viable sperm, even if they go off their female hormones.

I am grateful that people are finally recognizing that these side effects need to be discussed openly before people make decisions and that by doing so we are not being transphobic or "right wing."

Since transgendered youth and adults have shockingly high suicide rates, with or without treatments of every kind, (probably due to other underlying psychological issues such as depression), the problems caused by nontreatment, maltreatment or mistreatment of their gender dysphoria may just be unrecognizable and untrackable over time, because, well, suicide. It might be good to deal with gender dysphoria and concurrent other mental issues from a suicide prevention perspective, first, and decide who gets a tutu and who gets a lumberjack shirt later.

Teens can be very confused. I lost friends who were so stoned/drunk they fell off high places and died. Drunk driver at 17 friend went through the windshield and his scars made him look like Frankenstein. Others could not get it together to hold a job for years. People went in and out of Goth, hippie, music, and other fads. We don't let teens vote, buy booze, buy a house, buy a gun, sign contracts, etc. but we will let them on a whim have permanent surgery and maybe become sterile? And if the person quoted has "helped" hundreds transition, I do not trust her doubts now.

ccscientist said...

Do people change their minds? I have known lots of women who in their 20s said they never wanted to marry or have kids. 10 yrs later they are married with kids. Anorexics are convinced they are fat--do we give them diet meds? I've known many couples who wanted divorce but changed their minds. But this trans stuff is permanent. You can't get your boobs or dick back. And teens cannot know who they really are attracted to sexually. As a teen I had no interest in kids but once married I was a great dad. Should my teen preferences have ruled? It has been shown that many boys have a homosexual encounter around puberty, but don't go back to that. Girls who think they are boys often decide that they are really lesbians. All this "I think" stuff in the absence of reality testing is misleading.
