4 more looks at the misty morning.

I stopped to take a picture of the forest path:

Since it's ignored around here, I'd like to bring up the fact a sitting member of the United States Congress is on trial, via order of a liberal judge, to disqualify her from re-election due to political rhetoric related to J6.

The top picture could easily be mistaken for a civil war battlefield in Georgia. There they would call it Soldier Mist, made of the souls of all the men who died there.

Mist and fog can make for interesting pictures. On Easter Sunday, I was on break at work early in the morning, eating yogurt in my car and listening to music in the parking lot. On my way back in, I noticed that there was low ground fog to the east, and the sun was shining through and illuminating it. I got a really good picture of it.

clouds and mist really make the sunrise photos so much prettier.

Here in GA, some people say ‘chunk it’ to mean dispose, or ‘chuck it’.

chuck: throw (something) carelessly or casually. "someone chucked a brick through the window"

My theory is that somebody took the first 3 letters of ‘chuck’ and combined with the last two letters of ‘junk’ and that’s how ‘chunk’ came to mean ‘throw away something.’

Any thoughts?

The pic at 6:18 seems to have a small black object in the water. At about the 4 o’clock position (using the sun as the center of the dial) and 2/3 way up to the horizon.

Might it be the otter? Or is that wishful thinking?

Browndog: why the fuss? That would only be noteworthy in a working democracy subject to the rule of law.

All beautiful, but, my! The path… maybe that would be amazing blown up and on the wall- as if it could lead to a secret somewhere..

But, it already does for you, Althouse.

It reminds me, nostalgically, of riding my horse when I was a teen(barefoot &bareback, always) down the lightly traveled back roads of home.

Some things were needed for humanity to advance. Some things you have to know to survive in the wild. But you don't necessarily have to know them yourself to get by in today's world. I have survived this long without being able to make fire with two sticks, tell a sheepshank from a bowline, or use trigonometry. I suppose if I were lost at sea in a sailboat, it would help if I knew my knots, but I suspect I could figure out how to get the ship moving without knowing sines, cosines, or logarithms.

"but I suspect I could figure out how to get the ship moving without knowing sines, cosines, or logarithms."

Yes, but mathematical optimality is what takes ships to space. Otherwise we would need to launch 1000 rockets to get one in stable place. So a few need to know these things. Like in Los Alamos, only the 0.0001% were needed.

"'There are millions of people in the United States,' she began. ‘Why,’ she asked, ‘do we have to choose the one who attacked Joe,'" the authors wrote of a conversation Jill Biden had after she learned Harris became a leading candidate to serve as Biden's running mate.

Having attacked Biden was one of the few qualifications that Harris had for holding higher office.

It's easy to be skeptical of articles that interpret politics in personal terms, but yeah, Jill probably hates Kamala.

The book also says that Joe didn't want to use Kamala's relationship with Willie Brown against her. That's a plus for Joe, but 1) Kamala isn't a Republican and 2) she wasn't much of a threat or an obstacle for Joe, so he could let her slide. Don't think he wouldn't have gone there if he had to.

You don't need Trig to get the ship to go, you need the trig to figure out what direction to go in when there are no landmarks.

Only high-quality STEM will get you to the moon and back safely, but high-quality STEM won't tell you why to go to the moon and back. You need something more primal and intuitive to motivate that.

Some of my comments about higher maths might be taken as sour grapes, but it's anything but. I'm in awe of the mathematically able, but none of the things that interested me then, or now, depended on mastering anything difficult in those disciplines.

Today, and while it lasts, the STEM-inclined have plenty of opportunity to do important and hopefully life-enhancing things with their intellects.

Like fart around here, for one.

I guess it was Passover or something:

Me to my son on Shabbat: “may the Lord make you like Ephraim and Menashe”
Me to my daughter on Shabbat: “may the Lord make you like Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah”
My kids to me on Shabbat: “may the Lord make you like Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Monica, Joey and Phoebe”

"'There are millions of people in the United States,' she began. ‘Why,’ she asked, ‘do we have to choose . . . Joe,'" the authors might have written.

Which reminded me,

Buckley said in 1965 on the television news show Meet the Press:

“I have often been quoted as saying I would rather be governed by the first 2,000[*] people in the Boston telephone directory than by the 2,000 people on the faculty of Harvard University.”

*The number varies; some have him saying 400. Either way, the point stands. Ordinary people would govern that career hacks who are mean and stupid and who use the office to get rich, like Joe and Jill.

Josephbleau, I think the Republicans should stick together and refuse to remove abide via the 25th. Force the DemoncRATs to remove him by impeachment. He certainly meets the qualifications for it.

But I strongly suspect the DemoncRATs would Arkancide one of their own in preference to removing him via impeachment. Especially after two attempts to remove Trump failed miserably.

Gospace said...

I sincerely hate having to do this on my phone. Biden, not abide. Stupid automiscorrect.

Because then they would have to look into WHY Nancy refused to let the National Guard come in after Trump requested them. What Trump actually says doesn't fit their narrative. They still claim he planned this. (even though HE requested 10,000 National Guard that Nancy refused....ask yourself why somebody who was planning this would do THAT!!)

The timeline and what Trump says without proof that he was cheated is more important than one video delivered late. Ivanka could not get him to call off the destruction inside the Capitol and to end the vicious fighting that injured hundreds and killed half a dozen people.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on January 6, Biden addresses the nation.

"I call on President Trump to go on national television now, to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege. This is not a protest — it is an insurrection."

4:17 p.m. - more than four hours after meeting with supporters outside the White House saying, "We will never give up. We will never concede," Trump does not go on TV. Instead, he posts a Facebook video talking to his supporters inside the Capitol.

"I know your pain. I know your hurt," he begins. "We love you. You're very special. You've seen what happens. You've seen the way others are treated. . . . I know how you feel, but go home, and go home in peace."

Around the same time, Maryland and Virginia send the National Guard and state troopers to the District of Columbia. The question remains as to why the National Guard already in DC had not been sent to the Capitol by in-charge Pentagon personnel that included Mike Flynn's brother.

Shortly before 6 p.m. - Almost five hours after the rioting began, police start to clear the Capitol and eventually secure the interior.

6:01 p.m. - Trump tweets.

"These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!"

7 p.m.- three hours after Trump finally asked rioters to stop and to go home, Facebook removes Trump's video and one other post from the day. In a statement, the company says, "We removed from Facebook and Instagram the recent video of President Trump speaking about the protests and his subsequent post about the election results. We made the decision that on balance these posts contribute to, rather than diminish, the risk of ongoing violence."

Later yet, Twitter suspended Trump for 24 hours which was made permanent on January 9th.
