The ice on Lake Mendota this morning had crushed itself into some distinctive shapes.

I think it was pretty damn brave of those Canadian Geese and Coots to be out there in that icy water.

This could be a whole new field of Found Art. You should sell tickets to let people guess what shapes they see, and then give a prize for Most Crazy.

Ice plate tectonics driven by the wind??

They were in another spot, a protected bay, which was completely melted. The pattern seen in this picture formed, I am inferring, from the opening up of some areas and cracking, causing there to be floating plates that collected this area and, crushing together, formed those elevated piles of curving lines of broken up where the plates collided. I've never seen it quite like this before, I don't think.

Just seeing this: "Ice plate tectonics driven by the wind??" Yes, that's what I was describing. I was going to say "like plate techtonics" (before seeing you'd said that.

When I first saw it, I thought: Why would anyone do that? Then: How could that happen without people?

It was wind-driven ice like this --but far more massive-- that sank the "Endurance" in the Weddell Sea in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men onto their unbelievable trek back to civilization. What in your picture of Lake Mendota may be shrapnel, as thin plates ride over each other and shatter, in polar seas become pressure ridges many feet thick and exerting unbearable force.

Look at herring-bone clouds for mysterious forces, anyway if you're not a mathematician.

A federal judge ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump attempted to illegally obstruct Congress as part of a criminal conspiracy when he tried to subvert the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021.

“Based on the evidence, the Court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021,” U.S. District Court Judge David Carter wrote.

Carter’s sweeping and historic ruling came as he ordered the release to the House’s Jan. 6 committee of 101 emails from Trump ally John Eastman, rejecting Eastman’s effort to shield them via [a nonexistent] attorney-client privilege.

sometime in the past 15 or 20 years Lake Erie froze all the way from Ohio to Canada. Some radio personality decided to walk from Cleveland to Canada. It turned out to be a difficult hike because he had to climb over ice ridges that were 7-10 feet high.
He made it, but did not walk back

I’m glad no people were involved in the making of this natural work of art.
We’re already too big for our britches! The britches our brains wear!

A puzzle: why aren't Biden's polling numbers higher? War fever usually boosts a president's popularity, and popular sentiment now is white hot and almost monotonically supportive of Biden's stance on Ukraine. New developments and the optics are all in his favor.

But no bump at all for Biden in the polling numbers. What gives?

Talk about crushing yourself into distinctive shapes:

“Are you worried that other leaders in the world are going to start to doubt that America is back if some of these big things that you say on the world stage keep getting walked back?” Doocy asked.

“What getting walked back?” Biden demanded.

“It may sound like, just in the last couple days—it sounded like you told U.S. troops they were going Ukraine. It sounded like you said it was possible the U.S. would use a chemical weapon. And it sounded like you were calling for regime change in Russia and we know—”

“None of the three occurred,” Biden insisted.

“None of the three occurred?” Doocy asked.

“None of the three,” Biden insisted again.

No puzzle about Biden's polling numbers if anyone would honestly look at them.

Most Americans think that Biden isn't doing enough to help Ukraine. The fact is that Biden is more like the pants-wetting isolationists and anti-globalist nutcases -- likes to shoot his mouth off and talk tough, but is catastrophe dangerously weak and ultimately refuses to give Ukraine the help they really need -- than he is like those who recognize the danger of Soviet Russia to world peace and freedom and the imperative of stopping them.
