"Family’s Balcony Death in Switzerland Appears to Be Suicide, Police Say/The investigation suggests that the victims jumped from the seventh-floor balcony 'one after the other,' the police said."

The NYT reports.

The police said on Tuesday that their investigation suggests that the four people — a 40-year-old man, his 41-year-old wife, her twin sister, and the couple’s 8-year-old daughter — plunged to their deaths in Montreux in western Switzerland in succession. A fifth person, the couple’s 15-year-old son, also apparently jumped from the seventh-floor balcony but survived, and he is in a coma....

Investigators said they found a stepladder on the balcony, there was no sign of a struggle and no witness heard any sounds or shouting coming from the apartment or the balcony before the family fell, they said.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the family was “very interested in conspiracy and survivalist” theories, and had stocked up on an “impressive” amount of food that occupied most of the apartment, the police said.

“The family lived in near autarky,” the statement said, “removed from society.”

From the Wikipedia article "Autarky":

In Stoicism the concept of autarky represents independence from anything external, including independence from personal relationships, so as to immune one from vagaries of fortune. The Stoic sage is autarkic by being dependent only on his own virtue....

Early socialist movements used these autarkic efforts to build their base with institutions like the Bourse de travail, socialist canteens and food assistance....

Right-wing totalitarian governments that have also strived for autarky, developing national industry and imposing high tariffs but have crushed other autarky movements....

...the family was “very interested in... survivalist” theories

Looks like that survivalist theory has been disproven...

IF they'd PAID ATTENTION to the covid conspiracies, they would have know that
ALL THEY HAD TO DO, was take off their masks, and GO BACK TO THEIR LIVES

the Worst Thing, about conspiracy theories, is people don't pay attention to them

Did they spend a lot of time watching the 2019 Swedish horror film Midsommar?

This movie makes bright sunny summer days creepy...

Or, was the father/mother a Heaven's Gate style cult leader without an external following? Group suicide to join the stars:

Choosing death for the team or family isn't rare if the team feels threatened or senses the end of the world/military invasions/apocalypse. The reaction isn't left or right wing, just primal behavior and an effort escape of "worse things to come." Remember the many jumper suicides from the second World Trade Center tower to fall in 2001.

Probably couldn't afford the Swiss suicide services. Gravity is free of charge.

Selbstmord Touristin?

It's a French family visiting Montreux.

Aren't they supposed to schedule a visit to a clinic??.....or maybe they did, and nobody wanted to off an entire family.

Morally if not legally, I think the death of the 8-year-old counts as murder, not suicide.

Dr. Fauci called. He wants to know if he can add their suicides to the COVID death count??

From local reporting.

[The] boy was to be home-schooled and it was a verification procedure by two policemen at the apartment earlier which seems to have inspired the act..

I generally enjoy the comments on this site as they add to my knowledge by giving me different points of view. In this case, the comments are almost uniformly disgusting to me. I see nothing funny about this and am appalled that so many of you see this as an opportunity to make light of a tragedy.

Yes. The area is called the Swiss Riviera.

Mongo. I'm with you.

But you may not like mine either. The twin sister. That's the curious hook in this group, to me. The twin sister.

Twin sisters. I am not referencing this awful story. Just the curious and cool dynamic that a man can find himself in with twin sisters. I've known a few pairs, and they're always fun; but one in particular. I often got the feeling from the twin that she understood me better than her sister and we could have had a lot of fun.

Which was almost certainly not true. The twin was just competing, and I loved her sister. But something funny happens with those twin sisters.

So what was happening in this story, that the wife's twin sister was so bonded in that she made the jump too?

Oh ain't you glad that we live on an island,
You can choose your own way of being killed,
You can jump off a cliff and get drowned in the sea,
Or be dashed 'gainst the rocks and get split,
And it could happen to you (no it won't happen to me)

Side by side they walked into the tide, till it rose to their nose and then
They kissed with their eyes "goodbye".
They were seen to smile just before they dived, dead lovers don't have much
Except a certain desperate sense of style .....
But aren't you glad etc. ......

There were a lot of crazy problems that they couldn't resolve
A lot of tricky questions which they just couldn't solve
The main problem was of course he couldn't say "no"
On your marks, get ready, steady here we go.

In a fifth floor lift a man slit his wrist, his head ticked over and then it suddenly slipped away.
And the girl in the mac at the back of the shack, lay her head on the track
And said "I think it's better this way".
Oh she was glad that she lived on an island etc .....

“If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?”

I (actually) started watching Surviving Death on Netflix. Idk if I’ll continue b/c it gets into the paranormal and seances…
They explained something called ectoplasm that made me gag and run to the toilet. Not my thing.

My fried lost her granddaughter last yr- 22yrs old- to a backward plunge from a parking garage level.
She was hearing voices- thought G*d was talking to her. He wasn’t- the enemy was. The enemy will pretend until we give in.

Please, don’t.

Which is also why I totally get Jefferson. Or the alleged Jefferson, who makes psychological sense to me. OK, not a twin; but who doesn't get the intensity of the attraction? Maybe even more so, somehow. Not a new thought for this group, undoubtedly. But why did this twin sister join the suicide pact??
