My design editor put up my first Sci Fi novel on Amazon last month, and today I scheduled it for free downloads this Friday and Saturday. It's already clear that as much as I like the current cover in print I will need a new one for the tiny kindle listings.

Though I don't expect it will be a commercial success, it is the product of many 5am writing sessions and more than a few writing classes at Stanford, so I do hope that there will be a few favorable reviews. Either way, its a relief to get it done and published. One more check off the list.

“The incredible powers that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given his government to freeze people’s bank accounts is based on their reliance on “analysis” from the CBC.”

“This is according to a 14-page document the government tabled in the House of Commons Wednesday night detailing the supposed rationale for invoking the Emergencies Act in the first place.”

“The basis for some of the most controversial measures they’ve brought in merely rely on nothing more than CBC reporting.”

Is anybody else following (or trying to follow) developments in Canada, specifically the first invocation by PM Trudeau of the Emergencies Act since it was enacted in, I think, 1979? This is his response to the truckers' "Freedom Convoy" now camped in Ottawa. The closer you look, the more horrific the mess becomes. If you thought we had due process issues, you ain't seen nothing yet. I won't catalog them here, but right now the Canadian government, acting through the banks, insurance companies and financial firms, is seizing the assets of anyone "involved" with the convoy. Its database of suspects is (1) a list derived by hackers plus (2) news reports produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (the government's propaganda arm) and (3) not confirmed by or even presented to the suspects. One minute they've got a financial life, the next minute they don't. Where and how they get their lives back is not clear.

I think the invocation by Trudeau of these emergency powers under the Act is currently being debated by Parliament, which must then vote up or down. I greatly fear they will not stop this coup.

What ever happened to traveler's checks??

Why were they invented?.....and where did they go?

I'm guessing it was credit cards, and electronic banking, that canceled travelers checks, but damn back in the early '80's. Don't leave home without them!!

I also want to know how members of the Seattle City Council are always re-elected when they are so unpopular.

One of my wife's co-workers moved into a house on an bluff with a view of Hwy. 2 through Stevens Pass (the east exit of Monroe).

What he failed to notice was the crudely terminated line of R-57(?) coax cable that ran up to the top of the only tree on the vista.

Needless to say, lightning found the coax cable, and went to ground. Gravel, and dirt spewed in every direction. Breaking windows, and ruining the house siding.

So Durham has just filed something that basically says, not my fault if folks took my filing last week to spin a bunch of BS. I was just trying to contextualize a potential Latham conflict issue. But to be safe in the future I'll file such stuff under seal so people can't use my stuff to spin cr@p.

Yeah. We've been waiting over two months for this due to the concrete workers' strike.

NY Post

"A 22-year-old man was stabbed while breakdancing aboard a Manhattan subway train in an unprovoked attack Thursday afternoon, police and sources said.

The victim was knifed three times by a suspect, who’s believed to be homeless, on an L train approaching the 3rd Avenue station just before 2 p.m., according to cops and sources.

The breakdancer suffered two stab wounds to his leg and one to his arm.

Police said the assailant fled the train at the 1st Avenue station. He was still being sought Thursday night.

The victim rode the train into Brooklyn, where he got off at Bedford Avenue and received medical attention..."

https://nypost.com/2022/02/17/breakdancer-stabbed-aboard-nyc-subway-in-unprovoked-attack/

I saw this 22-year-old schmo Wednesday afternoon doing his illegal thing (somersaulting, walking on the ceiling of the train while upside down) to annoying very loud recorded rap music on a crowded downtown #4 express train at 86th Street. Couldn't get off right away because the next stop was 59th Street.

The crazy homeless guy was probably annoyed as well.

Hope the young acrobat has learned that some New Yorkers can/will go postal on you at any time if you annoy them.

They've been around ever since there have been banks. In fact, they're one of the main reasons banks exist. It was a secure way of carrying wealth from one place to another in unsafe times. You deposited your wealth with a man or family you trusted. They wrote a letter to someone at your destination who ran a similar business. (Often a family member) The letter authorized paying a specified person a specified amount of wealth. No good to bandits.

In more modern times they were ways of carrying wealth from home that could be easily converted to the local currency as needed, without having to pay repeated exchange fees. (and in the cases of strong currencies at a premium exchange rate each time)

John Durham didn’t have much to say after being called out for making baseless accusations that his source, Trump stooge Kash Patel lied about, leading the former President to suggest Michael Sussmann should be killed. Durham simply will not take responsibility for the death threats made by his ex-boss who is not a third-party in this case.

Travelers checks were the precursor of the pre paid credit card.

A way to transfer money among strangers. My parents always had several $hundred on hand. give to us kids if we were heading to the city, or grab on the way out the house when going into the Quad Cities, an hour away, where a personal check at a store or restaurant might not be accepted. This is back in the day when 'counter checks' were the standard. Counter Checks were a blank check from the bank. No personalization. Stores would have a rack with 2-6 different pads of counter checks. Just grab and write out the check and sign. The girls at the bank would figure out the signature. That went well into the 70's in small town Iowa.

Gaslight us some more, readering

Nowhere does he refute any reporting, though certainly some media outlets got stuff wrong, or that he was mistaken to file the matters in manner he did, he only laid out the rules by which he files this stuff and asserts that he followed these rules in the first place. Nowhere does he say that in the future he will file similar documents in secret.

I've wondered about this. How many commenters here are paid to comment here? how can you tell? Some comments sound like pre-fabbed talking points. How widespread is this phenomenon?

What is the right word for such people? Influencers? Campaign workers? Activists? Paid "activists"?

I've never seen our world go from abundance to scarcity so fast. I really have never seen our world go to scarcity before, period. It's a different place.

Kai Akker said...

The Arab oil embargo, 1974 was it? There was scarcity. Lines every day that could take an hour to get through the gas station. If you were a good customer of their service, they'd pick your car up at 5 a.m. fill it up and return it. Early so no one saw them or were already waiting in line.
