"When, in 1978, Dr. Scott first injected the powerful paralytic Clostridium botulinum into the eye muscles of a patient who had undergone retinal detachment surgery..."

"... that had left his eye pulled to one side, he didn’t know who was more nervous, himself or the patient.... But the procedure succeeded, and Dr. Scott would go on to refine one of the world’s deadliest poisons into a life-altering treatment — he called it Oculinum — for those who suffered from conditions like strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes. Doctors also began using it to treat migraines and jaw-clenching, among other ailments, and as they did so many of their delighted patients noticed a curious byproduct: The toxin’s ability to paralyze targeted facial muscles smoothed the lines around them, though its effects wore off after a few months...."

From "Alan Scott, Doctor Behind the Medical Use of Botox, Dies at 89/An ophthalmologist and researcher, he discovered a drug that treated serious eye conditions. It also smoothed wrinkles — and an alternative industry was born" (NYT).

RIP Dr. Scott - unintended consequences CAN be positive. Sounds like he did a lot of good for a lot of people. All these interesting folks shuffling off this mortal coil.

Ask me why Smooth Operator just popped up in my head. Massive earworm.

Another unintended consequence.

Serendipity happens most often to those who are prepared for it to appear.

one of the saddest things about capitalism is the people who give us these wonderful medical treatments, or inventions aren't the ones who get rich off them. Just like the ones who discover the Gold, don't end up owning the Gold mines.

Thank God for Dr. Scott. A rare neurological affliction caused my wife’s eyes to slam shut unexpectedly about 20 years ago and forced her to stop driving until a combination of very tricky surgery and Botox around her eyes every 90 days stabilized her eyelids. It had the side effect of a smooth wrinkle free face. She had looked ten years younger than her age before so this beneficial side effect was gilding the lily. Neither of us is complaining!

What’s sad to me is that innovation is not encouraged by the powers that be if it benefits an alternative good. Drs are being threatened of loss of license if prescribing ivermectin to suffering Covid patients, say…

May ethos good driest in peace.

A wonderful man who helped me tremendously by fixing my life long strabismus when I was about 65 a few years ago. When he walked in I drily commented that he looked older then I expected he just smiled and proceeded to in a very no nonsense way surgically repair the condition. No botox on this one. His hands were steady even in his 80's. It's been a huge benefit for me and I'll be forever grateful. RIP Dr. Scott.

For those unaware, this is called "off-label" use (for cosmetic procedures). Just like Ivermectin for COVID.
