The top story in the Wisconsin State Journal: "Wisconsin athletic department condemns fan’s actions at Tuesday’s men’s basketball game."

"The fan was seated across the court from the UW bench and adjacent to the Northwestern student section. A video was posted on social media of him standing up flipping off the student section then making a racist gesture."

I wondered what racist gesture? The article does not say, but there was a link to the video, and it wasn't what I'd pictured. The fan got ejected from the game, so I'm not sure why this is front-page news. Is it to decry racism or to stimulate the belief that racism is raging in America today?

Sounded like "Suck on that."

Looked like he had his middle fingers extended in the classic gesture of contempt while pointing at his temples.

Not sure what is going on.

I have seen worse things.

There used to be a dictionary of French hand gestures website, but I don't know any racist hand gestures. Have to invent one.

Maybe fingers in nostrils broadening the nose out, like the Asian eyes genre.

Nothing beats a neener neener taunt though.

Scot said...

There are racist gestures everywhere. Embedded in everything. You may not even recognize them until years later. Then you demand forgiveness.

I think the accusation is that he made Asian slant eyes. And maybe he did, but you can't tell from that video--he might have been doing something else when he put his finger to his temple.

I am unfamiliar with that second gesture... (after the flip-off) What is that? What does it mean?

Someone in the foreground says "ooh boy" - like it crossed a line.

Obviously Asian slant eyes. Funny part is that he will be pumping their gas in a few years.

There is crying in basketball. Maybe not as much as in soccer, but still, that's a high bar.

Scot - LOL

It's true. It's racist to drag our sorry white butts out of bed everyday.

Just calling the gesture (whatever it was) racist makes it so.

I just commented on FB on the unpopularity and lack of music quality of rap and hip hop and I got called a racist. I then cited Ann's post that "modern" music isn't played on Spotify and it doesn't sell. Compare that to the Motown sound. Soultown is my favorite Sirius channel.

Calling people racists is what the Dems and Fake News do today. How do you disprove it?

Whatever happened to Cocking a Snook?

Cocking a snook is a sign of derision or contempt, made by putting the thumb on the nose, holding the palm open and perpendicular to the face, and wiggling the remaining fingers. It is used mostly by schoolchildren, often combined with verbal insults, sticking out the tongue or blowing a raspberry. It is also known as thumbing the nose...

Evidently, Stalin Cocked a Snook.

How about Mickey Rooney's character in Breakfast at Tiffany's? Rooney played Mr. Yunioshi with "slanted" eyes, overbite and mustard-yellow skin color. That was super racist. I wonder if the courts will apply the laws of obscenity to this stuff?

prejudice
1 : an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.

racism
1 : a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

The Two Minutes Hate is alive and well.

Why do reporters never actually report what happened? When did that become acceptable. This is from an Asian-American news source: "A University of Wisconsin fan was removed from a basketball game at Northwestern University after he made slant-eyed gestures towards Asian fans in the stands." If they can report it, why can't Madison.com?

Daniel12 said...

Some people are so invested in the idea that there is no racism, only complaints about racism, that they cannot admit that there is anything, other than complaints about racism, that is racist.

So when a guy obviously does the slanty eyed thing at an Asian person staring straight at him -- twice! -- it must be nothing, fake news, cancel culture, yada yada. Isn't this more of that Barbara Streisand effect? Just say that guy is racist and move on!

Jeff Brokaw said...

Life was far better back when every random public display was not on video and blasted out via social media for everyone to get all outraged about.

He acted like an idiot, but then a lot of sports fans can act like that at times. Making them go viral is not going to change anything.

Asians often refer to Europeans as “round eyes”.

Are any of us the least bit offended by that rather obviously true description?

Rollo said...

Things like this happen and always will, and the authorities deal with them accordingly. Nobody with anything else to do will be talking about this next week.

Does that mean that it's nothing? The question is irrelevant and pointless. It's something. Everything is something. But how much of a something is it really?

Meanwhile, Black Anerican athletes in China are abused with racist taunts and nobody much notices or cares.

It's the Madison WI "University of Wisconsin" basketball, and fans.

That ~90% chance the guy is a Democrat.

Unless we get people outing his "right wing social media" in the next day, it's 99% chance he's a Democrat.

I'm curious, Howard, do you get paid to be here?

Or is it that your life is so pathetic and worthless that you have nothing better to do with your time than come here and post meaningless and bile laden screeds?

Here's a thought you might want to try: If you don't have anything useful to offer, then STFU

Joe Smith said...

The sparky response would be, "It's something. If he pushed an Asian woman onto the subway tracks, then it would have been nothing." But the snark doesn't add anything.

My favorite chirping moment from a long ago, a more civilized time:

In the mid 70s the Michigan’s hockey team had a player named Angie Moretto- good player, as I recall. At that time, we Gophers hated the Wolverines almost as much as we hated the Badgers. We couldn’t imagine a guy would be named “Angie” so when the Wolverines came to Minneapolis we gave Angie the business- every time he touched the puck we’d chant AAAAANGIEEEE, over and over.

Now the student section in Williams Arena, as it was called then, was in the balcony, which was right out over the ice- had to be an intimidating place to play with the students so close.

Anyway one night Angie just destroyed the Gophers, four goals, IIRC. when he lined up for the face off following the fourth goal we started up the chant. Angie looked up into the balcony, flashed a giant smile, and gave us a wave. We gave him a standing ovation!

Please keep using "WASP". As an agnostic Swiss German primarily, I am hoping for a day when I can call myself a POC. North Africans and Middle East types (Arabs, Turks, Persians, Palestinians, etc.) managed to break away from Caucasians. So have "hispanics", whatever that means. I hope that Slavic, Mediterranean, and Nordic types can break free as well. And Swiss Germans. And we are left with WASPs as white and all others POCs.

Asian eyes aren't slanted, they just lack an extra skin fold that occidentals have along the top of the eyeball.

In WWII buck teeth were the chief Asian stereotype.

You could hand-gesture buck teeth by holding 2nd and middle finger down from your mouth but nobody would understand who the insult was aimed at.

I haven't seen anyone in real life do that slanted-eye gesture in decades and decades. I have seen it a few times in Kdramas when characters are making fun of other Asians.

Hopefully some day making slant eyes will be as inconsequential as giving you the finger.

If you go to New York and flip the bird to some black guy he'll shoot you. But if you're Asian he'll push you in front of the train just for fun. No finger needed.

Non story. People are jerks. Always have been, always will be.

As noted above. Events showing racism, are woefully short of filling the demand. Blowing imagined slights out of proportion, or the woke-irati flying false flags is just a required part of life.

If this is a fan smearing Asians with a hand jester is some societal wrong. What about the university limiting Asians admittance to their University? That seems a much larger and consequential racist smear than some imagined hand gesture, that has to be explained.
Goes into the category of "its not racist when people with Doctorates do it"
