An ice fishing story to keep you warm:

So, in my family the Mother’s Day tradition is/was to go to the fish club and sit at the big table for a lovely lunch. Afterwards if the weather is agreeable we’d head out on the lake for some canoeing and fishing. Well one year I’m paddling with mom and trolling with the wooly buggers when mom hooks up with a dandy so I set down my rod to grab the net. Of course I didn’t bother pulling in my line, which of course meant a quality trout strikes my bugger and proceeds to drag my pole overboard. Correction: proceeds to pull overboard my uncle’s very expensive fly rod which I borrowed for the occasion overboard, quickly into the deep…

Uncle was not happy to watch the still hooked fish jump all over the lake for the next 10 minutes, dragging his rod along for the ride…

Days later I’m out several hundred dollars replacing the rod while he and fellow fish clubbers drag the bottom with open stringers and other contraptions looking to salvage the pole. Ever the enterpriser my wife buys him one of those über strong magnets used to retrieve all sorts of metallic flotsam…

Now, to keep this story moving and advance to the ice fishing portion, the next winter a fellow ice fisherman, like they are want to to, opens a hole with his ice auger and, like they are want to do, said ice fisherman loses the ice auger down the hole into the deep. What to do? Well, said uncle of our story happens to have the magnet handy with his kit and soon discovers said magnet makes for a fabu ice auger recovery device! Flash forward a few years to the present when our uncle has acquired a bit of a reputation amongst the locals as the go to in just such an emergency. He’s up to double digits in saves, with the latest recovery happening just this weekend…

Epilogue: He never found the missing rod with the magnet but one summer morning my uncle sees the rod propped up by the front door of fish club, recovered by a snagged line of a fellow angler, much worse for wear. The rod, not the angler…

"Another DA decides not to charge Cuomo in harassment probe"

That's 4 with jurisdiction, if you are counting. Which is still less than the number of women who have alleged improprieties by the former governor.

The message is perfectly clear. If a powerful man crosses the line with a subordinate, might as well keep it to yourself; it's not going to go anywhere.

Latest Woke Nonsense:

Washington Examiner (January 31, 12:59 PM)

High school biology class compares transgenderism with tree frogs that change sex

'A biology class at a Massachusetts high school compared transgenderism in humans to clownfish and a species of tree frog, both of which can change their sex under certain conditions.

The comparison was part of a series of slides that discussed variation in human biology in regards to sex, gender, gender expression, and sexual orientation."

The slides, which were obtained by the parent activist group Parents Defending Education and reviewed by the Washington Examiner, say that “humans are conditioned to view sex and gender as binary.”

In a slide that discusses “human biological variation,” the lesson mentions “intersex people” and that “only mentioning biological sex as male and female marginalises intersex people who have been persistently discriminated against.”'

Ice augurs don't have some sort of thing attached to keep this from happening? Seems like a pretty obvious thing to design against.

SpaceX launch just went right overhead. It was pretty cool. I wish I had filmed it, it seemed like the video feed was several seconds behind what I was seeing, which was extremely cool, as I said and don't mind repeating.

You do know that beer is one of the main ingredients in ice fishing, right?

I could see the sonic booms happening, well I think it was that, you know, when rings of vapor appear instantly around the rocket, at least that's what it looks like in pictures of jets creating sonic booms, https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/jet-sonic-boom well, anyway, the sonic booms just got here.

My Explorer Troop went to Florida for the Apollo 17 night launch in 1972. We had a perfect viewing location, then the launch was delayed and we had to move. Awesome launch, great exhaust flames and loud!

A true ice augur would warn you that it was about to get lost.

And at 122 Lem said, re Cuomo, "If a powerful man crosses a line . . . " I think he meant powerful D-man.
