"Sinema reiterates opposition to eliminating filibuster, probably dooming Democrats’ voting rights push."

WaPo reports.

And:
[T]he circumstances in which she reiterated it — as Senate Democratic leaders prepared to launch a decisive floor debate and less than an hour before President Biden was scheduled to arrive on Capitol Hill to deliver a final, forceful appeal for action — put an exclamation point on her party’s long and fruitless effort to counter restrictive Republican-passed state voting laws.

We're told that she wore "purple, a symbol of Washington bipartisanship." There's always interest in what this Senator is wearing. So here — you can look at her as she stands in the breach:

She isn't stupid. This is an election year. She knows her stand is popular in AZ and she is running cover for vulnerable Senate Democrats running for reelection. She saw what harry Reid unleashed and understands perfectly well that sooner or later the Republicans will win back the trifecta and with that the risk of Republicans not just junking the voting bill but junking a lot more of the Democrats edifices. She is taking one for the team but if things gone like they are now, after this years elections she will be thanked profoundly albeit quietly by the Senate Democrats.

If the voting bill had any Republicans buying into it the Democrats wouldn't need to change the rules.

I think Sinema may be honest and have some actual principles.

I know there are at least a dozen republicans, possibly all of them now that Cruz showed his true colors, that are itching to get HR1 passed but they have to keep up the charade.

But the GOP knows they can count on hundreds of unknown governors and AG's and other apparatchiks to keep the voter fraud going and the Regime in power.

I also openly question whether or not a lot of Republicans are being honestly elected in these states.

I encourage my fellow Arizonans to write Senator Sinema to applaud her courage and independence. I have done so three times in the past year while explicitly identifying myself as a long time registered Independent.

Letters of encouragement will pass the message that the Far Left will not get their way in Arizona.

If the Republicans nominate their usual RINO to run against her in 2024, I will vote for Kyrsten.

@cubanbob, there is a senatorial election in Arizona scheduled for November, however Sinema isn't in it. The Democrat who will face the voters this fall is Mark Kelly, husband of Gabby Giffords, puppet for Chuck Schumer, and hardcore gun-grabber (who nevertheless has not spoken up about Alec Baldwin's gun mishandling).

Fun fact. Besides their party affiliation Kelly and Sinema have another thing in common. Both defeated the feckless Martha McSally.

I asked this on another thread and I will ask again here. Does anyone have a link to a transcript of her speech?

From Huff PO:
Martin Luther King III blasted Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) after her Thursday speech announcing that she wouldn’t support changes to Senate rules to pass Democrats’ major voting rights bills, accusing the Arizona lawmaker of “siding with the legacy” of prominent segregationists and white supremacists over that of his father, the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“History will remember Sen. Sinema unkindly,” King III said in a statement shortly after Sinema’s speech on the Senate floor ended. “While Sen. Sinema remains stubborn in her ‘optimism,’ Black and Brown Americans are losing their right to vote.

“She’s siding with the legacy of Bull Connor and George Wallace instead of the legacy of my father and all those who fought to make real our democracy,” King added.

Wilbur is still waiting for the identity of a single qualified voter who is losing their right to vote.

Cubanbob's point still holds even though Sinema isn't up for re-election until 2024. She will be running in a presidential election year in a state that is still fairly red- a hard row to hoe for Democrat. Additionally, I think she has higher ambitions, and understands rightly that being a hard core leftist isn't going to be a way to distinguish herself from other ambitious Dems.

There are 50 Democrat and 50 Republican senators. If Republicans are a minority in the senate, so are the Democrats.
Harris is allowed to cast a tie-breaking vote. She is not a senator, the senate is not split 50-51.

She doesn’t seem consistent to me. Should the US Senate allow people who are not US Senators to vote in their so-called deliberative body?

What a disgusting group of people these democrats are led by low I.Q. Biden, Harris, Pelosi and all the rest of the corrupt democrats.

Just before President* Joe Biden came over to the Capitol in a mighty cavalcade to push forward his socialist agenda with all his prestige, Senator Sinema gave a tiny little speech sinking the whole enterprise like a little torpedo boat sinking an aircraft carrier. The moral of this story is that you don't win votes by disrupting weddings and chasing Senators into bathroom stalls as was done by leftys to the Senator. But you do invite retaliation.

Kelly is scared. He has been running ads for several months now, extolling how he is working with Republicans for the good of the nation.

He really thinks his voters are stupid ... or dead.

I agree with others who believe that Sinema is looking for higher office. I doubt if she is truly moderate, but she is not a loon.

cubanbob said...

The republicans should they win control of both houses of congress should pass their own Right To Honest Elections bill which would include valid ID and vote fraud preventive measures and use the guarantee clause as a basis to do so at the federal level. Biden of course won't sign it but every democrat and RINO will have to make a public stand on it and that will clarify a lot for the voters in 2024 and just for president.

For the record, here is what I wrote/predicted at this blog on October 20, 2018 -

I've met KS a few times (she would not know my name) and followed her career for last 5-10 years. While she's probably a progressive at heart, she has spent her entire time in elected office (state and federal) trying to work with republicans, be bipartisan and get things done, and she gets attacked by bat-shit-crazy progressives in AZ all the time. As I've said re Flake, if all of our Congressmen and Senators legislated like KS we would be in a much better place. I think she's going to lose in close one (but depends on turn out) and 538 has exaggerated her chances to win for weeks. If she wins she will probably be one of the best (least worst) Democratic Senators in Congress. One caveat, I think she has always belonged to the minority party when in office.

Virgil Hilts said...

As I also wrote on the same day in 2018 (I still think it helps to understand KS' peculiar situation)
- Another point for those of you not fortunate to live in AZ. We are blessed to have had only one Dem Senator in last 50 years - Dennis Deconcini who was too liberal and replaced by the great Jon Kyl (who if our system worked should have become POTUS). Don't forget - McSally and KM are fighting to take over Flake's seat. Flake got too liberal and was going to lose the primary. If the winner of these two becomes too liberal she will be one and done.

Virgil Hilts said...

I have been waiting for Kelly to make a brave dash to the center here in our great State. He has guts (of that I have no doubt), but may be strategizing not to make the move until it is too late for the crazy batshit AZ progressives to run someone in the primary (personally I think he has waited too long and made hinself look weak and unmanly allowing KS to take all the heat). If he doesn't move to the center soon, he could lose. I like Blake Masters, but he might be too conservative for Arizona if Kelly can actually run as a moderate.

“That which touches all requires everyone’s agreement.”

Most of the time, with some exceptions, unanimous agreement is nearly impossible, for a variety of reasons.

The narrative is that the filibuster is an impediment to pass good legislation. But it begs the question, if it's so good why can't it get 60 votes?

The way I see it, the filibuster is a way of encouraging a higher threshold of agreement, because some things merit that higher threshold.

No. Those GOP senators voted to avoid a filibuster on a particular issue, not to abolish it for good. It was the usual Senate sausage-making.

I, for one, recall the Missouri Compromise in which Senator McCaskill decided to vote for Obamacare only after an explicit bribe of about a billion dollars for her state, and the Cornhusker Kickback, in which Nebraska got the same or better. Democrats calling this a “voters right act” is excellent PR. Who can be against voter rights? But it ought to be called the “voter fraud act.” It outlaws requiring voter IDs, encourages drop boxes and vote harvesting and other activities advantageous to activist Democrats. Good for Sinema.
