Writes Ron Johnson in "Why I’m Seeking a Third Senate Term/I’d like to retire, but I think the country is in too much peril" (in The Wall Street Journal).
January 9, 2022
“President Reagan warned that freedom is fragile, always one generation away from extinction.”
"As I have told crowds since my first Tea Party speeches in 2010: This is a fight for freedom. This is not someone else’s fight, this is our fight, and it’s a fight we absolutely must win. I believe America is in peril. Much as I’d like to ease into a quiet retirement, I don’t feel I should. Countless people have encouraged me to run, saying they rely on me to be their voice, to speak plain and obvious truths other elected leaders shirk from expressing—truths the elite in government, mainstream media and Big Tech don’t want you to hear.... We face powerful forces that desire even more power and control over our lives. Their path, paved with false hope and greater dependency, always leads to tyranny."

Good. We need Johnson. He fights.
He’s a good one. America needs him. Thank you Wisconsin for Senator Ron Johnson!
If the country is in peril, Ron Johnson isn’t the answer…
He's not wrong.
Isn't this ALWAYS the excuse?
They get into office promising to serve only a single term. Or two.
Then, when time is up, they find that they are indispensable and must, regretfully break their pledges to the voters.
The very little I know about Johnson is favorable and perhaps his staying is not the worst thing in the world.
It is not even disappointing since it is expected and unsurprising.
Sad.

In one generation the conditions that make it possible for an Elon Musk to fulfill a dream could easily vanish. The Covid19 response is showing that.
Link to a video of Victor Davis Hanson talking to Nick, a History and Math major.
The theme of the video is called "The Dying Citizen"
Oh he's doing it for us. Such self-sacrifice.
Puhleeze! They run because they like being members of the ruling class.
I have been thinking of that quote, as I approximately remembered it, for several weeks now. God for a Reagan in office again now.
And thanks for looking beyond your comfort zone for this post, Althouse.
"I believe America is in peril"
Not according to Biden, Pelosi, democrats in general and the media. Everything is fine, never been better, just get your shots and be good little sheep. And don't listen to those people over there squawking about freedom and liberty they're all right wing crazies.
Reagan was right, of course.
"If freedom is fragile, always one generation from extinction, then what are we waiting for? Let's get to work extinguishing what's left of it!"

"This is a fight for freedom."
True. Not that the Tea Party did much about it.
"I believe America is in peril"
True. But at least a substantial minority likes it that way. Remains to be seen if the nice women of America will join the fight, such as it is.
He said two terms, he meant two terms, now he's going for three.
GHW Bush said no new taxes, he meant no new taxes, he agreed to new taxes.
GHW Bush wasn't enthusiastically supported in 1996 because he broke his pledge, especially because he fell for a trap set by the Dems to make him break his pledge.
I see no reason Johnson can't be replaced by his chief of staff in the next election, or by anyone else Johnson would endorse. It is bad enough we have bullshit artists aplenty on the opposite side of the aisle, pissing on us and telling us how great it is the drought is over, but when our own guys do it, it hurts even more.
Well we've finally come upon that generation!
He is right. There really isn't else to add or say.
Well we've finally come upon that generation!
We've got that behind us.
He's right, you know.
There aren't any signs indicating your presence at a turning point in history.
What's worse than being a hypocrite is making your supporters hypocrites -- making them say, I would oppose anybody else who did this, but I'm making an exception for you, Ron.
Giving support to all the other clowns who think they are indispensable is also not cool. If we don't have legal term limits on everyone, term limiting yourself in advance is a foolish move.
He's got that right.
All that talk about incumbents and the establishment being the problem went right out the window once he became one.
Still trying to find a single useful legislative accomplishment for Johnson, and he has had 12 years. Time for new blood
plus, being a committee chairman is Nice!!!

"The importance of having House Democrats literally wait in line for the honor of shaking Dick Cheney's hand and heap praise on him isn't so much that it rehabilitates Cheney. What makes it important is what it says about the current-day Democratic Party and what and who they are."
It's more important than ever, to defeat the corrupt hypocrites and lairs - called the insider elite democrat party.
I applaud him for making this decision. We need his reasonable, conservative voice in the senate, plus he tends to get ample media exposure
in the WSJ and on Fox. I see him as a strong voice for conservative viewpoints in the upper midwest, not just in Wisconsin. I know he will get a massive pension when he retires, but his decision still takes some courage since congress has become such a toxic place. Good for him and for Wisconsin.
I despite statements like that. He is fine as a senator, but he's not that great and not crucial to the functioning or maintenance of American democracy.
A lot of people value safety and security over individual freedom. I do not know that this approach 'always leads to tyranny.' Perhaps it may lead to more safety and security. There are people, for example, who value the individual freedom not to get vaccinated, only to make themselves more vulnerable to a virus that can be quite dangerous.
Good.
Now WI needs a good GOP candidate for Gov

If the US had a functioning government, that would be true,
Sadly we have a GOP whose "elite" are mostly culturally Democrats, and a Democrat Party that is fundamentally anti-Aermica, anti0-democracy, anti-rule of law, and anti-US Constitution
IOW, sadly anyone who's willing to point out with the Emperor is not wearing any clothes IS "crucial to the functioning or maintenance of American democracy". Johnson's willing to do that, and far too many others are not

John Thune is doing it because he likes being a member of the ruling class.
If Ron Johnson just liked being a member of the ruling class, he wouldn't be going to war with big Tech, he'd be feeding at their trough

Don't forget to lower your expectations.
He seems addicted to being on tv.

One has to be a very trusting soul to prefer security over individual freedom. So far, I haven't seen much evidence to trust those in charge to competently and benignly and unobtrusively provide me and mine security. Have you?
Why doesn't he run for governor?
That job would have a lot more impact on freedom in Wisconsin.
If you value anything over individual freedom you've already become a slave.

I was born in 1959. America is closer to becoming a totalitarian state than it ever has been in my lifetime. Never before have the media, the federal bureaucracies, academia, big capital, big business, the trade unions, and a political party (the D's) all been in agreement on public policy.
A few of the items in which they are in agreement are:
Men and women are indistinguishable.
Cops do not prevent crime, cops cause crime.
The most important thing about you, the thing about you that determines the outcome of every significant event of your life, is your skin color.
Ha ha.
His being a politician that focuses on jabbering on/for Fox News (and such) is really important! W/o that the country is lost. He’s protecting we the people from big tech and commies. He’s not a POS that cons the rubes and shills for his big dough backers.
Got it.
" Not that the tea party......".
Well, in their defense, when it became evident that they and their positions were popular the libs, the msm, and the obama administration used every office of the government to attack and destroy them. Witness the actions and activities of the first and justice department today.
I worked for Ron Johnson's first election, passing out flyers and phoning voters in Shorewood. A useless effort in terms of Shorewood but good for state. It's amazing how well he turned out, showing, as in other cases, how much those who turn to politics after being a success in business have to contribute.
Everyone loves power, especially when they think they have a good hook. Power corrupts, plus ca change. I'm happy that he'll have to tack hard towards MAGA to stay, but I don't live in Wisconsin so I don't care. Even if I considered the Senate a great bulwark of democracy, which I do not.
I'm glad he's going to run again. We all need to do what we can if we believe, as he does (and I do), that this country is in peril. I have zero intention of running, but I'm glad someone like him is going to try to staying in place. He is a fighter. He seems to be consistent in his battling. He knows the lay of the land there.
We need plenty of new faces in Washington, but we also need to keep the good ones we do have. Ron Johnson is one of the good ones. In the meantime, we all need to do what we can in our own way. Or we'll wake up one day soon and wish we had.
I wonder who the Democrats will nominate.
Wouldn't vote for him if he was the only person running. Glad i don't live in Wisconsin.
He has proven to me to be a man with no spine, no intelligence or any common sense.

Plus he doesnt shower with his daughter. Something Vicki approves of.
Whoever the Democrats run now will have a better chance of winning.
Vicki from Pasadena is glad she doesn't live in Wisconsin. That's a feature not a bug.
Whatever else Ron Johnson has done, his Expert Panel on Vaccine Mandates gave a voice and a face to victims of the Covid mRNA shots. That alone puts him near the top of the 100 Senators -- and cuts off any pharma money his campaign might have gotten.

So do I. What is the "Democrat bench" in WI?
Mayor of Milwaukee? I have to believe the Mayor of Madison is too Left to win anything Statewide in WI. The Dems haven't controlled either house of the Legislature since 2010 (thank you Obama).
The AG, Sec State, and Lt Gov are all Democrats. Happily, that should change this year. But maybe one of them will try to move up
I note that the WSJ this morning included a lot of inches on Incumbent Fatigue. I assume this will be ignored when Tammy Baldwin runs for re-election in 2 years.
