"Set against a pastoral Californian back yard, it at times resembled a play with three characters: a discontented (for good reason) woman, her angry and accommodating husband, and a mediator..."

"... tasked with drawing them out while acting as a stand-in for the curious public. Winfrey... is not just an interviewer but 'something of an emissary, a reactive translator of emotion, a master weaver, pulling disparate revelations into a collective portrait that colonizes the mind.' Some of Winfrey’s lines—like a simple, incredulous 'What?'—were among the most emotionally lucid moments of the broadcast. Of her many successes, this may be what she does best: listen, react, and press a little harder for the truth. As a television performance, it was a role that perhaps no other human being was equipped to play."

From "The Best Performances of 2021/The people who burst through the excess of amusements, onscreen or onstage, and did something extraordinary" (The New Yorker), designating, among the best, "Oprah Winfrey in 'Oprah with Meghan and Harry.'"

Meghan the Grifter is a discontented woman for good reason?

Huh?

DISCONTENTED WOMAN??? Meghan got just what she wanted: the prince, the title, the money, the noterietay, the Hollywood “A” list status and contracts to push her “green” agenda. Phony, phony, phony!!! Poor doofus Harry. He doesn’t have a clue that he is being used by this social climbing shrew. We’ll see how long they last. I think they are already overexposed and deadly boring.

Isn't it interesting how these 3 garbage people are the ones chosen to ministrate to the rubes?

10 people own the media.

20ish if you expand out to Salon and Politico level.

Please go back to substack material. That was much better.

I would have to be paid to watch "Oprah Winfrey in 'Oprah with Meghan and Harry.'" A lot. Somehow, I got othered. I left the mainstream or it left me.

I won't make fun of peoples' weight unless they are out-and-out gluttons, but with all those billions you'd think Oprah could hire a decent hairdresser (wigmaker?) and stylist.

Those glasses are comical...

Rich and powerful people fuming about other rich and powerful people encouraged and cosseted by another rich and powerful person. Tawdry tantrums done dirt cheap. Playing an old British witticism of universal but shallow construct - they can all sod off. And promptly too.

What's the point of a media with no historical memory?

Oprah?

Ya know....I think there's something wrong with my TV because the only people enjoying the Black Friday discounts, and the holiday are black.

remember the time Oprah said she did crack? A few years before crack was around. Fool me once......

"Oprah was campaigning with Barack Obama, long after she’d been promoting anti-vaccinationists, homeopathy, and much, much more like them - practically the entire pantheon of the NewAge Movement - UFO nut, Shirley MacLaine, included. And the media said NOTHING critical about her, what she was doing, or the con artist's tools she was using. Unlike Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey was embraced with open arms for spreading misinformation and pseudoscience. And she always has been. Excused, even. Seth Macfarlane mentioned it in 2018. Meghan and Harry (two NewAgers) probably used her, in 2019, for that very reason. Few dare question what Oprah’s been buying (into) and/or selling, no matter how bogus it is."

I wrote a week ago. And then we wonder why everything's going to shit, when the media's licking her ass like this.

Oprah obviously has some skills or she wouldn't be Oprah.

Barbara Walters was a genius at dragging emotion out of people who came into the interview dead set on being stoic.

I can't imagine a world in which a person could live where anything about this incident or these people was somehow considered a triumph

Oprah Winfrey earned every penny she now has by being willing to sit and talk with people like Meghan and Harry, listening to their views of the world, and successfully not laughing aloud in their faces. That is some skill, right there, and worthy of accumulating her vast wealth.

Who is Oprah handing the young Hollywood starlets over to now that Weinstein is in prison?

Knock Oprah all you want, Crack. At least she introduced us to Dr.Oz, who is now running for the senate.

I also don't understand why the Duchess is "discontented (for good reason)"
As Oprah might say: What?

Chris Lopes said...

Well it certainly qualifies as a "performance" of sorts. I give her that. Not a genuine thought or feeling was presented, but it works as a one act stage play.

"Discontented, for good reason…”

That reason would be because she slept with Harry enough for him to marry her so she could have the title without the responsibility. The Queen nixed that idea so now she has to go back to grifting. I'm sure that's really a disappointment for her.

The writer's first problem was taking the Harry and Meghan seriously. The Windsor soap opera has had a long run but its best days are in the past. Harry and Megs are just a faint echo of all the earlier stories.

They're a great tabloid serial - in themselves and because they are part of the long-running Princess Diana serial. And there's a good couple/ bad couple dynamic going with William and Kate v. Harry and Meghan. They'll be around. Headlines to come: Next I think Harry will get homesick for England. So they'll work they're back toward there via the British possessions in the Caribbean just the way they circled to Hollywood via Canada. But Meghan will never agree to live in a country where in actual fact everyone knows she is not and never will be Queen and she knows they know it. What will she do?
