"TRAVEL HELL"? Reframe your perception: It's environmental HEAVEN.

Here's why that's heaven — if you are genuinely concerned about climate change. A radical decrease in airline travel would make a dramatic contribution in what has been portrayed as a desperate fight. I'm not writing this post to debate whether that portrayal is accurate. I'm speaking to those who believe (or purport to believe) that carbon emissions are a severe emergency. I'm saying see how this "hell" is heaven.

Let the airlines scale back the number of flights to deal with the labor shortage. Let supply and demand determine the prices. And that's just it, people. Enjoy the new heaven of airline travel drastically reduced by the economic process that is already in motion. For God's sake, don't try to reverse this process!

There is no “desperate fight” to save the planet. Global travel has minimal impact compared to the mining refining and production of batteries and solar arrays. THAT is where environmental damage and slave labor converge. China. Nothing the rest of the world does makes a dent in GGE so long as China keeps expanding their use of coal power. The desperate fight you perceive is among Leftists who are using Global Warming as a way to consolidate power, although some wish to also use it to crash the economy Cloward-Piven style!

The pilot shortage is government induced. On purpose. As is the upcoming fireman shortage, police shortage, trash removal shortage, etc. You want to fire people for not accepting a government mandate on a vaccine? You get labor shortages. No worries. They can be easily replaced by Afghanis Haitians, and Guatemalans who may not speak the language, and may not like women showing their faces, but are willing to work for less than $15/hour. Maybe.

As for environmental heaven, are we supposed to take any of these people seriously? Biden showed up in Italy with an 85 car procession. His two largest armor-clad vehicles had to be flown into Italy from the US. Who knows how many other cars were also flown in? 85 cars to bring in a doddering old man who could not tell you who he's meeting with, let alone the nature of global climate.

I'll believe the climate is a serious issue when those telling me it is, behave as if it is. That goes for John Kerry as well. Frauds. All of them.

UN Climate Talks: The Ritual

A pretty good - and funny - summary of the nonsense at the COP talks from 2007-2015. It's a shame this hasn't been updated but I doubt COP 26 will be any different. 400 private jets. Biden with an 800 person entourage. China and Indian not participating. The whole thing is a junket just as all the others were. If they were really serious about this they wouldn't be having this meeting at all.

I'm not genuinely concerned about climate change, but if I were, I'd be campaigning for rapid development and construction of nuclear power plants to replace fossil fuels -- including radical reductions in the regulations that make plant construction so expensive and time-consuming. New generations of nuclear plants will work 24/365, won't kill millions of birds as wind turbines do, won't produce tens of billions of solar panels to be "recycled" once they are decrepit or obsolete, won't displace tens of thousands, or flood beautiful valleys, as dams do (not to mention the risk of catastrophic loss of life from failed dams); and will allow developing nations to reach first world levels of comfort via capitalism, not globalist governing regimes.

But that's just me.

I'm speaking to those who believe (or purport to believe) that carbon emissions are a severe emergency.

I'm a member of that set. I have a couple of things to say about being in that set.

First, I agree that air travel should be minimized. These climate meetings are just "junkets," as they used to call them back in the day. However, the emissions caused by these meetings are tiny compared to "The little bit of driving I do is nothing compared to one day in the life of these assholes." There hundreds of millions of people doing that "day in the life." They add up. The fact that the upper crust doesn't take it seriously shouldn't make you not take it seriously. They are entitled idiots; you are at least in theory an intelligent person.

Second, those who blame China's penchant for coal burning are right. It is horrible, like many other things the CCP does. On the other hand we do a lot of equally horrible things (from a climate perspective): we (the US and many other "developed" countries) are shutting down nuclear plants and burning coal or natural gas instead. This is just as big a problem as the Chinese, but it's one we can control. Yet we continue. People who support climate change mitigation but don't support nuclear are fools.

You seem to be forgetting a couple things. First, and foremost, that is going to bankrupt the airline industry very quickly. That industry is highly leveraged. They have huge amounts of capital invested. Those planes are expensive. So are airport leases and facilities, reservation systems, etc. Even probably in a couple instances, futures on jet fuel (SWA has successfully predicted higher fuel prices and hedged against them, in the past, allowing it to undercut its rivals). They are fairly highly leveraged - planes on the ground cost them a lot of money. Scaling back a lot is going to bankrupt most of the larger carriers. Imagine being their management at a shareholder meeting, trying to explain why they effectively shut their airline down for a ridiculously idiotic COVID-19 vaccination mandate. They are owned, for the most part by institutional investors (as are most big stocks) like mutual, hedge, and pension funds. We are talking hundreds of billions of dollars out of everyone’s pockets. And, very likely, the company leaderships that go along with this nonsense are going to be out of their jobs, because the managers of these funds are out of their jobs if they don’t crack down on the political posturing of the airline companies’ top management.

Here is the thing. The bulk of the population doesn’t live in dense urban center, esp along the Acela Corridor. For most of us, that sort of lifestyle sucks. So the country is spreading out. The Biden Administration is staffed by people who do live along that Corridor, and are becoming less and less responsive to the people in this country, as they exert their ill gotten power over the rest of us. We like cheap airfares, because our families are spread across the country. Because its much more pleasant living in a pine forest, than a concrete jungle, where the predators are not human, and can be controlled. We prefer hearing birds wake us up in the mornings, over gunfire at night. We also like cheap gas and electricity, and don’t much like electric vehicles and brownouts. Esp for such idiocy as Climate Change (I.e. falsified CAGW) or pretend COVID-19 vaccines.

My take is that those who espouse concern about climate change are actually motivated by a desire to control the deplorables.

An unintended consequence may be a move to road travel by people who otherwise prefer to fly. Some may opt for Amtrak but route limitations make it less flexible.

The US gave the airlines $54 billion in Covid relief funds. Who knows how much the airports received? Understood, but can I debate whether a radical decrease in airline travel would make a dramatic contribution?

Commercial aviation accounts for 3% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. We fly more than our share, so aviation represents 1.9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. If we grounded all planes forever, the effect on climate would be within measurement error.

Little-known fact: Internet use accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions globally than aviation. I've decided to spend more time internet-shaming people. Of course, I'll need the internet to reach them and shame them. It's a little like flying to climate summits in that regard.

Fuck Joe Biden and all the phony 1%ters who are promoting this climate change bullshit that will enhance their portfolios and bank accounts. The planes are hurting the environment. So what if some investors lose? There's a tragedy of the commons here, and many of us are suffering from the burdens they've shifted onto us. A waste of breath (or bandwidth). Those who never miss an opportunity to loudly proclaim their devotion to the climate gods, including little Miss Greta the Radiation Child, are also those who are convinced their air travel is much too important to restrict. For nearly two years the proletariat has been encouraged by fair means and foul to confine their "travel" to Zoom meetings and other digital bullshit, whereas the climate priesthood has frequently traveled intercontinental distances, usually aboard chartered private aircraft, the least "climate-friendly" form of transportation available this side of manned spacecraft, to their various confabs. The fact that their jet-powered jaunts expel more carbon than the lifetime emissions of ten or twenty North African peasants fazes them not in the least ought to curb our expectations severely.

Fine, lets play devils advocate.

If you continue to live your life telling other people how to live their lives and forcing them to conform to your desires the people you are bossing around are eventually going to get angry and come for you. Especially if you continue to support a bunch of hypocritical shitheads flying to these conferences in private jets that do not abide by the rules they apply to others.

At some point you will learn that this coddled life you live is based on some very tenuous assumptions and foundations. One of those is that the government serves us, not the other way around. That means officious busybodies like you need to sit your ass down. You need to get our consent willingly, not through government force.

Forcing the masses to live according to the demands of the current regime/government in power will inevitably lead to regression of society back to the feudal monarchies that have existed all throughout history and currently exist everywhere else.

You don't seem to know the first thing about market economies or supply and demand curves or how prices are currently set. Specifically, supply and demand already determine the prices. That's how a market economy works. What you're proposing is having someone (the government or you?) artificially restrict the supply and let the demand be damned. That's economically illiterate, unworkable and pure fascism, i.e., it's state control of private companies and restriction of personal freedom. You advocate infringing on property rights, personal freedom and economic enterprise based on spurious climate claims and incomplete climate models when no one, NO ONE! even knows how many climate variables come into play, which are independent, which are dependent and what the cost might be in terms of human suffering for this type of "solution." There is not even a working climate model, let alone total agreement on whether the world is facing a warming trend or a new ice age. Nor can you predict what other solutions might be developed over the next 80 years until this supposed climate catastrophe is estimated to occur. Yet, you are willing to fuck with people's lives and futures based almost exclusively on your current prejudice about travel and your ignorance about other potential climate solutions from an ever changing technology. Progressives are basic concrete heads who look at the the existing technology and assume that's the way it will always be. The only reason for the technology to NOT develop is that you and others who think like you remove the incentives to innovate and achieve technological breakthrough.

You are a lot like Chuck in that both of you are basically one trick ponies on two subjects - he as a Trump basher and you as a travel basher. That's why I don't listen to Chuck on politics or you on travel. You're both irrational on those subjects and will employ any excuse to accommodate your manias. If you want to do something about green house gases why don't you quit driving two thousand miles round trip to Colorado to hike. There are lots of places to hike that are closer and less environmentally sensitive than the Rockies.

Because I know it is a waste of time. No matter how many facts and links I provide, your commentariat is going to reply in exactly the same way and blend in some some irrelevant personal and libelous insults (especially Michael K and Drago) for good measure.

And additionally, when I accuse you of not believing in CAGW, you will reply with something along the lines of: I never said I didn't not believe in whether or not CAGW is real or not.

First off, this problem really did originate with a major windstorm. American Airlines's main hub is at DFW, and these things happen in Texas.

Second, doesn't it seem there's a pattern to Professor Althouse's comments (which, given the benefit of the doubt, maybe her imagining someone who believes strongly about climate change) on what should be different because of climate change? At it's root is the willingness to ask other people to sacrifice for that person's cause. And in that a callous indifference to the suffering that would cause them. Have no doubt, the proposed disruption of any major industry would cause immense pain for those whose livelihoods are dependent on it, and the ripples out to other industries would have global economic consequences. The (highly inflationary) infrastructure bill being discussed in Congress is an attempt to deal with existing economic problems. It is so vast it would leave the government few options to deal with the scope of the new problems shutting down the airline industry would generate.

The measure of anyone's sincerity in support of a cause is what they personally are willing to sacrifice for it. Not just virtue signalling tweaks here and there, but what real pain they are personally willing to accept to see it through. If someone only asks others to sacrifice, they are hypocrites who shouldn't be surprised when they're ignored.

Yeah. The radical left ALREADY DOES think that way. They are cheering, just like they cheer the burning of Portland and other cities.

No need to explain it to them.

Translation: learn to code.

Hey there Mr/Ms aerospace engineer! Sorry, but we the government felt it necessary to eliminate your job due to baseless claims that your industry is causing the world to collapse (just after the next election cycle), but don’t worry - we (the government!) have a great new career lined up for you - child care or health care! Just tell us if you prefer to wipe children’s or older adults bottoms.

From this post and the comments I'm trying and failing to determine the Althousian position on global warming/climate change.

As best I can tell it depends on a belief in a "severe emergency" as opposed to "caring" about the environment. But I'm not sure. There seem to be some contradictions.

One thing that is clear is that she has found a hammer which can be used to pound a nail which she finds particularly irritating - travel.

PS, if they're having problems staffing flights then they're likely having problems staffing the maintenance department.

This needs to be fixed, Pete.

Except It’s not just a labor shortage. Airline employees of all stripes are beginning to push back. Our backs are against a wall. I agree that this is part of the plan though and some of us are unable to see where it leads.

I had a youngish Bay Area bred co pilot tell me on the day he was awarded a captain position that he thought it would be a good idea to require vax passports to fly domestically. Think about that.

The days of comfort are over. Or we will be living on our knees.

I believe that climate change ranks very low among the issues Americans care about the most. Jobs and the economy are consistently at or near the top of such lists. Therefore, anyone who is advocating in favor of a wholesale reduction in the number and availability of commercial flights, or in favor of any major restrictions on consumer choices, based on climate change fears, is necessarily speaking for a tiny minority of the population. America doesn't want this, so bugger off.

Progressives are basic concrete heads who look at the the existing technology and assume that's the way it will always be.

Regarding progressives, from Coyote Blog:

Beyond just the concept of individual decision-making, progressives are hugely uncomfortable with capitalism. Ironically, though progressives want to posture as being "dynamic", the fact is that capitalism is in fact too dynamic for them. Industries rise and fall, jobs are won and lost, recessions give way to booms. Progressives want comfort and certainty. They want to lock things down the way they are. They want to know that such and such job will be there tomorrow and next decade, and will always pay at least X amount. That is why, in the end, progressives are all statists, because, to paraphrase Hayek, only a government with totalitarian powers can bring the order and certainty and control of individual decision-making that they crave.

Progressive elements in this country have always tried to freeze commerce, to lock this country's economy down in its then-current patterns. Progressives in the late 19th century were terrified the American economy was shifting from agriculture to industry. They wanted to stop this, to cement in place patterns where 80-90% of Americans worked on farms.

In fact, here is a sure fire test for a progressive. If given a choice between two worlds:

1. A capitalist society where the overall levels of wealth and technology continue to increase, though in a pattern that is dynamic, chaotic, generally unpredictable, and whose rewards are unevenly distributed, or...

2. A "progressive" society where everyone is poorer, but income is generally more evenly distributed. In this society, jobs and pay and industries change only very slowly, and people have good assurances that they will continue to have what they have today, with little downside but also with very little upside.

Progressives will choose #2. Even if it means everyone is poorer. Even if it cuts off any future improvements we might gain in technology or wealth or lifespan or whatever. They want to take what we have today, divide it up more equally, and then live to eternity with just that. Progressives want #2 today, and they wanted it just as much in 1900 (just think about if they had been successful -- as just one example, if you are over 44, you would have a 50/50 chance of being dead now).

Althouse says: "The planes are hurting the environment."

This is a really dumb thing to say. And it highlights exactly why critical thinkers will never allow themselves to be ruled by such emotionally self-manipulated people.

The environment is not going to be hurt. Not even a little bit. Not even if every single outlandish claim about the effects of global warming made by the most deluded warming religion alarmists comes true.

Can you provide a single shred of evidence, even one correlation or black matter fill-in-the-blank supposition, that "the environment" is "hurt" by warming up?

No, you can't and you won't even try.

For all you know, the environment prefers to be warmer, and you and your religious adherents are hurting the environment!

How dehr you!!1!1!

Bruce Hayden said...

Althouse writes, "I'm speaking to those who believe (or purport to believe) that carbon emissions are a severe emergency."

What you seem to be doing is asking us to accept the Climate Change hoax, presumably for the purpose of argument. Something like when my Con Law prof asked one of the women in my class to take the anti abortion side of Roe v Wade, and the bulk of the class filed a grievance against him for his presumption (I volunteered). And that was well over 30 years ago. I can just imagine it today.

With someone with a potentially open mind, you can try logic and facts. For example, my kid’s PhD (CU Boulder, possibly the hotspot for this stuff in the country, with NOAA and NCAR in town, NREL 30 miles S in Golden, etc) is in an offshoot of environmental engineering. I remember when their response to my skepticism was that they had just taken an Atmospheric Chemistry class. And, one of the things that they taught (heavily, since it was Boulder) was the Greenhouse Effect of CO2 in the atmosphere. And, yes, after studying CO2 heavily for 5 years as a grad student, and several since, they know more about CO2 and its energy states than most. How to attack that? The basic problem is feedback. I asked how much warming was there based solely on CO2 buildup? Where’s the bulk coming from then? Feedback. Where’s the science behind the feedback? Why do the models, based on those feedback assumptions run hot and fail at both forecasting and hind casting? Could it be that those scientists claiming AGW that you cite have overly simplified their feedback models? I apparently have over the last several years moved them from a rabid believer to a warm believer (no pun intended). That means that I have a chance at turning them into a real skeptic.

But that isn’t who we’re are talking about here - PhDs in related fields with solid credentials and somewhat open minds. Your average Climate Change fanatic has none of these credentials, or, worse, any of this education and training. They appear to be mostly the college grads who took bonehead science classes to get their science credits in order to graduate (think AlGore here with his C- and D+ In his two science classes at Harvard). For them it is belief based on trust in experts and preconceived notions about the evils of man). Having mostly abandoned Christianity, it is their religion now.

And as their religion, logic doesn’t matter. Facts really don’t matter either. Which makes me ask, how are they different from Muslim Jihadists? How do you argue with someone who believes that their Prophet has decreed that their passage to heaven requires subjugation of all nonbelievers, either conversion to Islam, slavery, or taxation for Christians and Jews, and death to everyone else? You can argue all that you want that Mohammed didn’t actually say what he is said to have said, in their Koran or later writings. But there are a billion Muslims who believe that he did. And you can argue against interpretations, but they have numerous clerics, with doctorates in Islamic scriptures, who will say that you are wrong.

I don’t think that you can change the minds of religious fanatics, whether they are apocalyptic Climate Change warriors, or Muslim Jihadists. The only thing that I think that you can do is to try to marginalize them. The private jets, mega yachts, motorcade of 85 vehicles, etc are similar to the indulgences being sold by the Papacy of Martin Luther’s era, and the Saudi sheiks and princes drinking and having illicit sex in London, while pretending to piety back home. Their leaders are blatant hypocrites. We got the Reformation as a result of the hypocrisy of the Roman Catholic Church half a millennium ago.

I'm beginning to believe our blog hostess is trying to point out the absurdity of "the sky is falling" brand of climate change advocacy. If they really believed what they say, the bad economic effects of their policies would be of no consequence. They wouldn't try to hide them, or pretend they didn't exist. They'd be up front with those consequences, saying that this is what is needed to "save the Earth". They don't say any such thing, so they don't really believe it.

Says, who? The same environmental wackos who said that Glacier National Park would be glacier free in 2020? The same so-called climate modelers who can't make their models match the historical record and who change the historical record to make the past seem colder than it really was?

CO2 does not drive the climate. That's driven by the Solar sunspot cycle, the Earth's inclination cycle and the Earth's orbital eccentricity cycle.

The Earth's long term trend has been cooling since about 1,000 B.C. It was warmer during the Minoan Warm Period than it is now. There have been three other warm periods since then, each of which was cooler than the previous one. The short term trend has been warming since ca. 1700, with fits and starts.

All these politicians are using this so-called crisis as a way to garner more power into the government's hands, and therefore their hands.

One last question: What's supposed to happen when this crisis occurs? Have they said anything about cats lying down with dogs? Do we all turn into pumpkins? Maybe we freeze to death because the politicians have cut off our fuel supplies. Maybe the birds go extinct because the wind mills have killed them all?

Assumes facts not in evidence. Thunderstorms happen when the temperature in the tropics get to around 30-deg C. Once that happens, the temperature stops rising, the excess heat is transported by convection through the thunderhead to the stratosphere, where it's radiated to space. So, the tropics will not become unlivable. That's one of the climate-cults lies.

I have to think that Prof. A has deliberately spun y’all up on this topic. She’s trolling you. Her talk about hating air travel and being glad to see it shut down etc —which provoked a firestorm of well-stated substantive objections about the economic disaster it would produce— was IMHO tongue-in-cheek; just her playing Devil’s Advocate to drive business, drive people to make their best case, drive the lunatic fringe to apoplexy.

Socratic method? Oh yeah.

For what it’s worth, I think COP26 is just another Live Aid event. There is a vast army of people whose life consists of organizing and attending conferences on anything and everything. The topic hardly matters: the promotion and the commotion are the point. They are the gypsies, pilgrims, locusts, of our time. The single biggest output from COP26 (or COP “N”) is the commitment to organize (and fund and attend) COP27 (or COP “N+1”). As for all the new rules and taxes that emerge? Those cakes were baked in secrecy long before. No point in debating them, the first hard winter will see them perish.

And winter is coming.
