The most beautiful sunrise of this fall continues.

This was how it looked at 7:01 — 4 minutes before the official sunrise time:

I like that vertical beam. And that white strip — that was the most unusual feature of today's broiler. (I call it a broiler because it looks like a broiler you might cook meat under. It looks burning hot, but it was pretty cold. Wind chill 7.)

And here you see it shockingly faded, at 7:18:

Anyway, that's all for sunrise pictures today. Feel free to talk about anything you want in the comments. And please think of supporting this blog by doing your shopping through the Althouse portal to Amazon, which is always right there in the sidebar.

Yes, very striking sunrise! Good catch!

Beam me down, Althouse!

It was quite fortuitous that the vertical stripe pointed right to the place you were standing. What are the odds of that?

Now we have the omicron variant of the Wuhan flu?

We barely knew you delta variant.

This is bullshit. The testing for any COVID is highly subjective, and now we know that there is a new variant that is more virulent than the last one. Bullshit.

This is FUD: fear, uncertainty, and doubt. They don't want anyone noticing the fuck-up Biden while they pay-off their buddies with "infra-structure" money.

Beautiful pictures!

Since this is an open thread, I would like to update you on the status of the smash and grab organized theft mobs in California. Governor Newsom is on it! Here is what he had to say:

"I’m not the mayor of California. But I was a mayor. And I know when things like this happen, mayors have to step up. That’s not an indictment. That’s not a cheap shot.”

It's the governor who needs to step up. These mobs are organized across city and county lines. The people directing the thievery and the people doing the robbery come from all over the area. It wasn't just residents of Walnut Creek who descended on the local Nordstrom's and took $100K-200K worth of stuff.

The mayors are in a reactive position-they don't know that their city is the target of the locusts until the swarm has arrived.

The governor needs to coordinate with state, county, and local police to identify the perpetrators and their intended targets. He needs to work with DAs and the Feds to see if there are organized crime statutes that can be used to charge the perpetrators. He needs to work to roll back Prop 47 to make shoplifting a crime again.

Step up, Gavin!

I’m convinced. This is the most beautiful sunrise Althouse has captured with her camera phone.

The colors of your sunrises have been very dramatic lately!

Omicron is an anagram for Moronic

"The testing for any COVID is highly subjective,"

Not in the aggregate.

On the other hand, neither Mao, nor Stalin would have had the power to force the western media to skip a letter in the Greek alphabet out of sensitivity to their propaganda needs.

The vertical beam is called a "sun pillar". It is caused by zillions of ice crystals falling through the sky. But if the clouds are too thick, you can't see it from your POV, so is rare.

Fauci is in control of funding research at the same time as he is making pandemic policy. Fauci is the one who told Trump that the virus that Fauci helped fund would die out by Easter, BTW, so basically if a researcher criticizes Fauci, he risks losing research funding. The same way that they are trying to give Elon Musk's competitors in the US double the EV subsidy as they are giving Tesla in the Build America Back Better bill, and Musk going rogue on Twitter has nothing to do with it, I am sure.

I never tweak the color — I only pull down the light from where the iPhone has it set. I think the iPhone is optimized for taking photos of faces in low light, so it brightens everything. I have to re-naturalize things. The hot color is really there.

When I was on a photography kick, I had a color chart, printed on paper, that I would take a picture of in the same light as the picture I really wanted, and would use that to balance the colors in post processing, and I might make a note of whatever it was in the scene that I thought merited my attention in the first place, and work on emphasizing that.

It was very time intensive, and I think that your method of trusting the phone is a lot more sensible, given your stated reasons for taking the photo every morning. Especially when a photo on the internet is good for about two seconds, tops, of viewer attention.

This is one more opportunity to mention "Tim in Vermont's Law": All taxonomy is political.

I've seem ice crystals refract sunlight, but they are usually to the left and right of the sun. (22 degrees to the left or right?)

So why does the sun pillar point to the observer?

And it can't just be ice crystals in the air. You often see this on the surface of the water.

Today's Headline:

Mike Lindell’s Promised Election-Reversing Lawsuit Turns Into 96-Hour Pillow Sale

It's all a lie, of course, because prices on bed sheets made of Egyptian cotton have also been reduced by two-thirds.

So all Woke Leftists and Trumpian Rightists are expected to get with the MyPillow program while Mikey promises to talk to state Attorneys General after this holiday weekend about returning The Donald to the Oval Office yet again.

And why would enemies from both sides of the center jump at the chance to reverse history? Simply because both of the prominent left and right factions want to punch an illiberal hole in the American democracy.
