Sunrise — 7:14.

Nothing like the drama of yesterday's sunrise — even though on both days the cloud cover was reported to be 50%.

Talk about anything you like in the comments. And think of doing your shopping through the Althouse portal to Amazon, which is always right there in the sidebar.

JOHANNESBURG: The new Omicron variant of the coronavirus results in mild disease, without prominent syndromes, Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, told Sputnik on Saturday.

What the hell?

Me thinks we're being played.

Like a boa constrictor slowly digesting a rabbit, I'm still recovering from Thanksgiving - taking a plague test before a party, people, lights, wine, food, traveling about in the dark and the cold, watching snow.

So, I'm a Beatles fan, and an old fart with too much money that I decided to buy a blonde Epiphone Casino.......Yes, a John Lennon guitar.

Everyone raves about P90 pickups........don't ever go there.

I sold the guitar after a year. I couldn't get anything out of those pickups, but buzz.

I'm attempting an old thing - to re-awaken myself, to get up, to laugh, to cry, to be alive. You know how difficult that is. Christ said to Lazarus "Arise!" and it took two hundred years for that to mean anything, assuming it wasn't myth itself.

Browsed through a used bookstore yesterday. I was supposed to be Christmas shopping for other people, but I indulged myself. Found a book about Kant by Roger Scruton. The introduction says he wrote it for people with no knowledge of philosophy. That’s me. The first paragraph completely sold me, though:
“For Kant, the virtuous man is so much the master of his passions as scarcely to be prompted by them, and so far indifferent to power and reputation as to regard their significance as nothing beside that of duty itself. Having confined his life so that he could act without strain according to this ideal, Kant devoted himself to scholarship, entirely governed by congenial routines. The little professor of Konigsberg has thus become the type of the modern philosopher: bounded in a nutshell, and counting himself king of infinite space.”

Ha! I bought it. Look forward to reading it.

PSU's football coach, James Franklin, is acknowledged to be one of the best, if not the best high school recruiter in the country. Yet he cannot turn these young colts into thoroughbreds. Year after year, his teams teams under-perform. The result? Why a ten year contract extension, of course.

@Sydney,
What a delicious paragraph. That last line describes heaven on earth.

Of course, Kant might not enjoy the modern academy. "Are you an ally? Where's your ribbon? Where's your sticker?"

It was the cheap Epiphone pups. You should have replaced them with some Lolar P90s, that would have made a world of difference. Still, they're single coils so your always going to get some buzz.

I meant Lollar not Lolar... sigh

Last significant Covid variant was "Mu" ... this one is "Omicron" ... so WHO skipped "Nu" and "Xi" in naming this one.

They claim that "Nu" would sound too much like "New", but also admit:

"Xi was not used because it is a common last name”.

You don't say.

"The new Omicron variant of the coronavirus results in mild disease, without prominent syndromes, Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, told Sputnik on Saturday."

The prophecy is fulfilled. We shouldn't get our hopes up, I guess, but this is how a coronavirus pandemic that happened in the late 19th century ended, after killing millions. It became one more strain of the common cold to which everybody had antibodies, eventually, which fade after a year, but get boosted periodically, as people continue catching the virus when their antibodies are still high, and so have no symptoms.

There is no guarantee that such a mild strain will appear and crowd out the worse strains, and the fact that the original strain is so transmissible and variable in virulence suggests that this might be a tough row to hoe, but we can hope. It would certainly have been better if they hadn't screwed around with a bat virus to make it more infection to humans. Did you know it doesn't even infect bats due to the changes they made?

Anybody who thinks its BS that they screwed around with the virus should read this unheeded warning in Nature from before the pandemic. The warning that Fauci ignored, then he told Trump not to worry about it, that it would be gone by Easter. Fauci was lying to himself to ease his guilty conscience.

https://www.nature.com/articles/nature.2015.18787

This stuff is all pretty obvious, and seems like a waste of time to write, but a lot of people seem to be shocked as new developments occur, as if changes in our knowledge, and in the virus, suggest some kind of conspiracy, in and of themselves. Nonetheless, if Fauci were brought up before a Nuremberg type tribunal, I don't think that future generations would question it very much were he found guilty and given an appropriate sentence.

Daszak and Fauci should be strung up from lamp posts.

From tim in vermont's link: "Studies testing hybrid viruses in human cell culture and animal models are limited in what they can say about the threat posed by a wild virus, Daszak agrees. But he argues that they can help indicate which pathogens should be prioritized for further research attention."

What does that mean "further research attention"? What does their "attention" do other than put the whole planet at risk every day they're playing with the viruses in their labs? Have any of these people actually reduced humanity's risk by their tinkering?

Update: head of public health in South Africa announced the NuXiOmnicron deadly COVID variant! is actually producing very mild, if any, symptoms so far and she doesn’t understand the “storm in a teacup” that media in other countries are making over the new WuFlu variant. As predicted on this blog when the non-Xi variant was first noted, it may “spread quickly like Delta” but like all unsuccessful mutants it is less deadly and less morbid. If only the Public Health pros in UK and USA would stop trying to extend the panic by scaring people with “warnings” about variants and tell the truth. Weak mutations are helpful to spreading immunity by exposing us to ineffective versions. Think of the Common Cold as a formerly potent and novel COVID cousin to which we have such good herd immunity to that a cold is expected to run its course in two or three days every time. If you are very old or in poor health it can lead to pneumonia, like flu. But generally a cold or mild flu presents EXACTLY as we are seeing Om presenting right now in SA. If our “experts” don’t start being honest and admitting C-19 is no longer a “deadly pandemic” they deserve to be shunned if not hung for killing so many with their poor choices to shut down civilization last year. We need desperately to start recovering in full.

The latest China Flu variant should be called the Chairman Xi variant. We need to give credit where credit is due. In spades.

Fascinating. It was a REALLY nice, top-of-the-line Gretsch guitar on the USED guitar rack at Guitar Center that pushed me over the line. I traded in the Casino. The Gretsch was sold as a USED guitar. A week after I took her home, and played her vigorously, the mylar sheet fell off her pick-guard.

Can you launder money in used guitars??

I was lusting for a Bigsby whammy bar as well.

@Baceseras,
Oh, for the love of God...
Is there any work that is not a product of its time?
This is where Dead Poets Society had the right idea. "I want to hear the sound of pages ripping!"
I remember a story from Rod Dreher. He was talking with a professor who specializes in Dante. The prof said that his students of the recent generation did not understand what they could possibly learn from an old white man like Dante. They only wanted to talk about race.

Baceseras said...

@Andrew, what course did his students think they were signing up for? Was the class mis-labeled or -described in the catalog?

"In this class we are going to talk about Dante and his poem. If you don't think you can learn anything from Dante, you can learn about him." This message need not be delivered in thunder, nor patronizingly. It's just one of those self-evident things that bears brief mentioning now and then.

Baceseras said...

When these things boil over in academia, it isn't the students, it's the administration.

My son owns a small music store near Pittsburgh. If he has a new guitar on the shelf too long, he'll sell it as a used guitar, still at a profit, to work around the minimum price for new guitars set by guitar manufactures. Seems like Guitar Center does the same thing.
