"McAuliffe told a modest crowd outside a Fairfax brewery Monday night at his final rally. 'He is doing an event with Donald Trump here in Virginia.' That was a lie."

"Trump wasn’t in Virginia and he never campaigned with Youngkin.... Thirty miles away, at the Loudoun County Fairgrounds, a crowd several times the size of McAuliffe’s was waiting for Youngkin to take the stage. You got a hint of why McAuliffe was desperate to manufacture the fake Trump event... [H]is Monday audiences in Richmond and Fairfax, where we caught up with him, were modest and listless. Youngkin’s were large and rollicking, with many of the trappings of a MAGA rally — a similar dad rock playlist, hats and flags and T-shirts paying homage to the former president — but, to the great disappointment of Democrats, not Trump himself."

From "POLITICO Playbook: Youngkin’s crowds dwarf McAuliffe’s on election eve."

The spirit of Trump is pervasive and evasive. It even made poor Terry McAuliffe lie about it. I certainly hope the vote count at the end of the day shows that McAuliffe has lost, because if it doesn't, people won't believe it, and I don't like that kind of chaos.

One of the problems the DNC-Media has is perfectly personified by McAwful, and that is their extremely abusive relationship with the truth. During Trump’s term they claimed that Trump was such an extraordinary liar that they simply must keep a running total of his voluminous lies. As usual they undermined their own position by telling ten lies about Trump for every lie they accused him of to the extreme that they coopted the FBI, the FISA court and the embedded Obama holdovers to manufacture evidence against Trump. They continue to gaslight Americans about the insurrection that wasn’t, the economic boom that was, and the ridiculous claim that they are “fixing” the border Trump broke. So of course Terry M lies about Trump easily and often. That’s what the Monoparty is and does. Fewer free Americans are buying their bullshit lately. A Youngkin win would help restore some norms for this weary country.

I just don't understand why the Democrats aren't able to field better politicians in such DC-adjacent states like Virginia.

Don't they have -anybody- better at doing politics than Terry McAuliffe? It's not that he's lying but that he's so bad at it. They've got to have loads of DC area Dems, and some of them cannot be so bad at this.

There are so many ways the major issues of this election could have been finessed, not just CRT, but also parental access to curricula, etc. Have they stopped training politicians how to blow hot air?

Can't anybody play this damn game? I'm just befuddled.

"What we won't do is teach our children to view everything through a lens of race where we divide them into buckets and one group's an oppressor and one other group's a victim and we pit them against each other and we steal their dreams,"

I wonder how many early McAuliffe voters regret rushing to vote when early voting opened. McAuliffe showed his true colors in the past several weeks, such as insulting the intelligence of the citizens of Virginia that parents have no right to have a say in their children’s education or stating that Virginia public schools don’t teach Critical Race Theory when not only does the state’s education department stated it does on its website and that it was instituted when he previously was governor. I vote in person Election Day to gather as much info on the candidates as possible until the last moment - last November was an exception as I was infected with Covid and needed to get a mail in ballot at almost the last possible moment.

The way to get people to believe in the voting system again, is to get rid of mail in ballots. Show up to the polls, show an ID, and cast a damn vote. The only people who should be allowed mail ins are people who are physically unable to get to the polls. No more 4 weeks of voting. No more 2 weeks waiting for the final vote tally.

That will restore belief in the system.

As for Terry "White women need to be replaced by POC's at teaching jobs". I think he will win. You simply have too many yellow dog democrats and liberal/left white women in VA. Republicans never want to face the fact that demographics is destiny. Its just a simple math problem. If blacks vote 80-90 percent D, and other minorities vote 60-40 D, the only way the R can win is by getting 60 percent or more of the white vote. And if white women are voting 55-45 R, the D will win. That's it.

Trump is a symptom.

This is a fight over who controls the moneybags. The Dems are top-down types all the way. The opposition is fundamentally populist. In 2016 Trump had the first successful populist presidential campaign since Andrew Jackson. The governing cliques in both parties hated that, and they have used every means to destroy the symptom without really thinking about what is wrong with the globalist initiatives and the divisive identity politics that they have embraced.

The fundamental driving force behind Trump's power is the idea that the USA should look to the interests of its people first. You can have a welfare state or you can have open borders, but you can't have both. And if you choose open borders, there should be a strong civic culture and a "melting pot" approach to civic life. The governing cliques have chosen to try to have both open borders and a welfare state. It isn't going to work.

This campaign, among many others,, shows why early voting shouldn't exist- it should be "Election Day", not week or month.

There should be a strictly limited class of absentee ballots. Military personnel and families stationed away from their homes, diplomatic and other government personnel stationed away from their homes. If you choose to be on vacation rather than vote- that's your voting choice. Have surgery scheduled for election day? Too bad. Have to be out of town for work? Oh, well. Tough luck.

We know what you have in mind. We're not leaving until the counting's done, and we're not leaving you alone with the ballots!"

If the Democrats leave anyway, confident that the Republicans would not do any counting without them, because that would be cheating, the Republicans may leave, too, but we can be quite certain that they will also have someone guarding the front and back doors all night long, working in shifts, who will call the police and the newspapers and film everything if any Democrat even tries to get back in before 9:00 a.m.

Some tricks only work once, because they're easy to guard against if you know they may be tried.

So what is the metric where the “people won’t believe it” POV is such that Althouse’s brain wants these non-believers to get what they want?

If two people won’t believe something, is that enough? Is it a percentage thing? If thirty five percent won’t believe something, then does Althouse hope that these non-believers get what they want? Forty nine percent?

BTW, what is the population surveyed in this situation. Althouse tells us that there are already enough non-believers such that she wants the non-believers to not be disappointed. Who are the people Althouse is talking about? Only voters in Virginia? People other than these voters? Also what exactly is the current percentage of the total population that Althouse is referencing re being folks that are already guaranteed to be non-believers if they are disappointed even though there are no results? Does Althouse always hope that non-believers in every election get what they want when their non-believer numbers reach the non-believer proportion re this Virginia election?

Or does Althouse not have answers associated w/ her statement, because she was just jabbering to her isolated chunk of the internet that doesn’t think about what they’re reading. Hence the level of writing.

Logic is tricky.

Starting to look as though Youngkin has won outside the ability of Democrats to cheat. The Republicans had to flip six seats while losing none in the House of Delegates to flip that body from Democrat to Republican. It appears that the GOP candidates lead comfortably in all their vulnerable seats and currently lead in 13 jurisdictions where the seat is now held by a Democrat.

As I mentioned way upthread, Loudoun County is blue, and it has stayed blue, but not by nearly enough. With 97% of the precincts in that county reporting, McAuliffe is ahead by 16,000 votes -- he needed to win it by 80,000 to have a chance of winning the state as a whole. If the results hold up, Glenn Youngkin needs to send thank you messages to Scott Zeigler (Superintendent of Loudoun County Public Schools) and Brenda Sheridan, who chairs the Loudoun County School Board.

Democrat women actually care about their children. Who knew?

This is about a 15% flip in voters from Dem to GOP. Will that be replicated nationwide next year? I seriously doubt it.

But I think from this point on the "progressives" can kiss goodbye any hoep that the "moderates" will give them what they want. Because 1 5% D -> R move from 2020 to 2022 would be a nationwide slaughter for the Dems

As much as I would love to watch you folks implode over a McAuliffe triumph and mount another half dicked insurrection in Richmond, the country is better off when a Clinton scum bucket loses.

Final thought for the night:

With 80% of the votes in (2,168,808 votes), Republican Jack Ciattarelli is still leading Democrat incumbentent NJ Gov Phil Murphy by 50k votes.

I expect Murphy will sneak by in the end. But if you'd predicted 2 weeks ago that the NJ Gov race would be 50 - 50, you'd have been considered a madman.

The Democrats got hammered tonight. They got hammered on CRT, they got hammered on lockdowns, they got hammered because they're a bunch of racist fuckups and authoritarian assholes.

This didn't just happen in the South, it happened in the North. Youngkin apparently won by moving the needle everywhere in VA. In NJ, Ciattarelli needs a 16 point swing in his favor to win, and currently has it.

But even if he only ends up with a 15 point swing, do that next year and the Democrats will lose every Gov race they picked up in 2018, and every Senate race that's not a solid D lock (meaning GA and AZ, just to start).

If Dems were sane, they'd ditch CRT, dial back the mandates, and start trying to govern from the Center. but they can't, because their base is not sane.

Hell, Terry M lost this race because of CRT and parent involvement in schools. He knew he was losing it for that.

And he still kept going on CRT and "teachers rule, parent drool", because pushing that was more important to him than winning the f'ing race.

The next year is going to be quite interesting

But certainly we know that comparative enthusiasm at campaign rallies is no predictor of voting results.

I mean, don't we?

So, revisiting my earlier comment.

Even with Biden's current unpopularity, the Virginia race was winnable by a competent Democrat. The Dems, instead of a competent pol. had McAuliffe instead.

Youngkin didn't really do much of anything impressive -- he just made sane sounds with his mouth. McAuliffe just made blatantly stupid statement after stupid statement. After pissing people off about whether parents should be the primary people with input into kids' education, he decided to close out campaigning by having the head of the largest teacher's union speak at an event. Great choice, idiot!

I mean, this is not complicated. There is no deep analysis to be made.

People responding to me earlier were arguing, basically, that having captured specific voting groups made the Democrats lazy, and I suppose, but McAuliffe did some incredibly stupid stuff. They really couldn't get anybody better? Even Kamala Harris and Joe Biden, for somewhat different reasons, wouldn't be as bad.

They really couldn't get anybody better?

@meep, actually, no. Normally the Lieutenant Governor or AG moves up to run in the top slot, but Justin Fairfax was credibly accused of rape and he got less than 5% of the vote in the primary. Herring, the AG, decided to go for a third term as AG; a possible mistake on his part. McAuliffe had money, he left office with favorable ratings four years ago, and he had a lot of political favors he could — and did — call in for the primary.

Two things you need to keep in mind. First, the standard Democrat playbook told McAwful to ignore his opponent and run against Trump. Turns out that doesn’t always work. Youngkin figured out how to pick up Trump’s base without explicitly soliciting Trump’s support. It’s quite possible that Trump’s base are Republicans now, and not just Trump supporters. Second, any Democrat has to do the kowtow to the teachers’ unions. And this year, in this state, they’re poison. Will they still be poison next year in other states? Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see.

That's one good thing coming out of this election; one less chance for the whining bitches of the Trump Party to make phony claims that an election was "stolen."

Another good thing is that governance will improve in Virginia.

Another another good thing is that there’s one less chance for the whining bitches that view everything through the prism of their uninformed Trump hatred to think that their viewpoint matters at all.

Pro-marxist pro-CRT Biden voter LLR Chuck: "You should remove this, Althouse. If anybody actually took it seriously, it would be per se defamatory."

You passionately and vehemently defended Weaver and the Lincoln Pedophile Project long after all their child-grooming sex activities and cover up by ALL their leaders became widely known.

Perhaps your passionate and vehement defense of Weaver and the Lincoln Pedophile Project long after all their child-groom sex activities and cover up by ALL their leaders became widely known is why people think you passionately and vehemently support the Lincoln Pedophile Project and all their activities.

Banned Lefty commenter Inga (in defense of Banned lefty Commenter LLR Chuck): "But the question is why does Althouse allows YOU to stick around."

Probably to keep a check on idiot lefties like you and LLR Chuck who call the blog hostess a c*** and declare your intentions are to disrupt her blog and drive a wedge between her and her readers.

But you are a dumb lefty, so you've already forgotten everything that has occurred more than 15 minutes ago so naturally you are aghast at someone daring to raise the historical record with you.

Oh, and before I forget, my condolences on the utter collapse of another of your favorite lunatic conspiracy theories: the "secret communications" between the Trump Tower Server and the Alfa Bank server.

As I recall, you Inga, when you weren't busy accusing western Christians of being guilty for islamic supremacist mass murders, spent quite a bit of time pushing that particularly stupid conspiracy at Althouse blog.

That's gotta be rough for you to deal with. A solid first step to recovery would be for you to admit yoou pushed a blatant lie for years and years (I know, its hard to separate out all the lies you pushed, but remember, this was the Alfa bank lie) and that you are sorry for doing so and you will endeavor to not be so easily fooled again.

Good luck. We're rooting for you!

LLR Chuck: "So, they didn't. Democrats didn't steal the vote."

They didn't steal enough of the vote. I'm guessing the 100k/200k votes stuffed in early were expected to be plenty to pull it out if Youngkin was only going to be ahead by 2 to 4%.

Unfortunately for LLR Chuck's beloved Clinton Team Sleaze Member McAuliffe, Youngkin was much farther ahead than expected. Much farther.

And its tough to pull the "oh look, a water pipe broke 3 blocks away so all the republican poll watchers have to leave!" trick more than once.

pro-marxist pro-CRT Biden voter LLR Chuck: "Has Liz Cheney endorsed Youngkin? She’s not completely disinterested; she was a Virginia resident for much of her life."

Jason: "LULZULZULZ
VA area residents are still her core constituency."

Actually, VA-based political lobbyists and the DC democraticals and the lefty media are Cheney's core constituency.

But not to worry. Liz is now several months into her MSNBC/CNN contributor interview process and she looks to be a shoe-in for the Jen Rubin-"Conservative" chair on The View.

Which explains why Liz never actually goes back to Wyoming because, why would she do that? Nothing but icky freedom loving republicans out there.

McAuliffe won in 2013. This when the VA pattern was "vote opposite the President's Party" for decades before.

He didn't lose because he isn't competent, he lost because the Democrat playbook is a failure.

The Democrat Party is owned by the teachers unions. McAuliffe did what every other Democrat does, everywhere: he bowed to the teachers unions. Thus teachers decide what happens at schools, not parents. Thus "CRT yes!"

I mean, this is not complicated. There is no deep analysis to be made.

Yep: The Democrat Party agenda sucks. Democrat Party rulership in DC sucks. Stick to the Democrat talking points, get slaughtered.

You just keep whistling past that graveyard for another year, please. Because I really want to see the election results of you doing so.

The cost of "Covid lockdowns" for the Democrats is that parents were forced to see the insanity that the Democrat Party indoctrinators in public schools have been forcing on their kids.

And because even most Democrat voting parents actually do love their kids, they're outraged at the racist trash, and non-racist trash, being shoved on their kids.

Now, the Democrat Party Establishment thinks that that trash pushing is what's made the younger generation vote D, and so isn't willing to give it up.

And that's your problem. The core of your Party is completely wedded to drag queen reading hours, CRT, and boys in skirts in girls bathrooms.

In the past, the parents who want to vote Democrat have been able to turn a blind eye to this, and keep on voting D. That eye has been unblinded. And they're not voting D any more.

It wasn't just Youngkin who won. The GOP pulled a clean sweep of the statewide offices (yay for "white supremacy and the patriarchy! We got a black female Republican elected as VA's Lt Gov! You don't get any more "white supremacy and the patriarchy" than that!), and has flipped the State house of Reps (the Senate wasn't up for election) from 45 - 55 to 52 - 48.

it wasn't Terry's bad campaigning, it was your side's bad ideas.

But, like I said, please keep thinking it's something else. Because I want to win again next year, too
